As most of you know, our GPS Coaching program has been a smash success…
Hundreds of entrepreneurs just like yourself are finally blowing through their constraints and moving towards record profits in their business.
One of the most popular segments of the program is the annual Q and A sessions, where I get on the phone and let GPS members fire away with any questions they may have regarding marketing and business building.
And so far, we’ve had some killer sessions–so good in fact, that we’ve decided to let our blog readers in on them.
Over the next few days and weeks, we’ll be posting some of the best questions along with my answers. So without further adieu, let’s dive into the first question…
CALLER: You’ve normally used the "blogging and report" style of launch in the past with great success. But you mentioned earlier that you may use a different style in the future. Can I ask what you’re planning to do differently?
RICH: First off, there are a lot of benefits to incorporating a blog with the release of a report. Because many people won’t link to an opt-in page. But they feel safer linking to a blog page that talks about the report.
So I’ve benefited greatly from people linking to these types of blogs. And the result has been a tremendous amount of traffic to the download page coming from these links.
Plus, there’s the added benefit of the positive comments on the blog about the report. Like I talked about in the Attention Age Doctrine 2, these comments get spidered by Google and turn up high in the rankings for related keywords–which gives us more exposure, driving even more traffic and more downloads. Very, very powerful.
However, to answer your question, we’re going to test a different method in the future–one that I think will be highly successful. And here’s how it works…
In our research, we’ve found that the Web 2.0 community is fine with registering for a toll, application, or template, but they’re just not crazy about opt-in boxes.
So I’m going to take the report and give it away for free with no opt-in whatsoever. All you have to do is download.
Inside will be a variety of links to shortcuts, templates and tools that are closely related to the content and offer an "expanded version" of the report.
To get to these goodies, you have to click on a link that takes you to a different page. When you do, you’ll see the "extra". But then the page quickly grays out and a light box will appear, saying you have to be a registered user of the site to access it.
For example, in the Internet Business Manifesto, I could easily add a link in the report that takes you to a spreadsheet or a program that helps you establish the value of your time by imputing a few numbers. But you must register to have access.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: Won’t forgoing the opt-in substantially reduce the size of the list you’re trying to build? Personally, I don’t think so. And here’s why…
This new method will allow you to get greater penetration into the market because your report can be in more places. Plus, you can give your affiliates copies of the report with their affiliate links imbedded, which can even widen the net further.
My belief is that this could actually result in more opt-ins. And in talking with my good friend David Merriman Scott, author of "The New Rules of Marketing and PR", he agrees. In fact, David estimates that we may get up to 50 times more downloads with this new model.
Now, I don’t know if that’s going to happen (I’d LOVE it if it did!). But what I do know is that by not requiring an opt-in and having the affiliate links embedded in the report, I can go to practically any blog that makes money with Adsense and have them give it away for me.
And even if we do a remotely poor job, they’ll still make money by allowing people to download our report. Because people will stay on their site longer, increasing the chances of getting clicks on Adsense and other affiliate offers. So they get to give away something valuable for free AND make a few bucks while they’re at it.
Hope that answers your question. Let’s move on to the next caller…
Pretty cool, huh?
We’re still tweaking the details, but we’re very excited about utilizing this model and seeing what result it brings.
In the meantime, let me know what you think of it in the comments below, okay? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
To Higher Profits,
Rich
P.S. Keep an eye open for more Q and A posts in the future. We’ve got some REALLY good stuff lined up.
And don’t forget to add your comments below regarding your thoughts on this new direction we’re taking. I’ll be watching…and who knows? I may just chime in from time to time.
Looking forward to your feedback…

Cool idea. If you can make it easy for affiliates to auto-generate the front-end report w/ their links then it would get a wider distribution.
Damn dude… KILLER idea.
My brain is spinning now Rich.
I ‘was’ planning on getting to bed a little early tonight, but this just gave me so many ideas.
Thanks dude,
Ryan
Great idea! I use a system called MyViralSpiral by Tim Brocklehurst in the UK to upload my own reports which I then make available to my list to rebrand using an online rebrander, with their own Clickbank, PayDotCom links etc. I get access to their lists, and they can build their own lists which go viral too….takes a bit of getting your head around but very powerful and lots of nice features.
I’m telling you this because the software is out there….somewhere!
Rich, Tim is a student of Mike Filsaime and it may be derived from or adapted by Tim from the Butterfly Marketing Software so you may want to talk to Mike….or Tim.
I highly recommend Tim’s system for techie orientated newbies particularly as it’s free to start with, and you can have a look at how it works by going to my personal blog site and clicking on the Money Gym “Business Succes In The 21st Century” report on the left hand column.
Hope this helps!
I need to think about how I can use this now, as I had great success with Rich’s idea on our GPS call about following his video competition / live ustream.tv show model to market our Gold programme. Starting the year with more people signed up than last year which is very cool as it’s a £4554 / $7000 odd product!
Go Rich, you are very inspirational just watching what you are doing, love it.
Cheers, Nicola
Hey Rich
It’s a very neat idea. I heard what you were saying there.
I think you can take it further though. You almost have a googlecash level idea in your hands there.
If you don’t need a list, you don’t need a product either. Find someone else who has a great product but no marketing skills whatsoever and partner with them (not affilate, partner!). Take their flop launch and re-launch for them (even if the product is 2 years old) and split the profits above the level of their current sales.
Bingo, no product, no list, no marketing budget. All 3 in 24 hours or less.
Ed
ps thanks for your help with everything recently. GPS was groundbreaking in so many ways. I’ve just re-read “The Goal” after for the second time (with a 2 or 3 year gap) and am making up my own ways of using TOC for our business. What I’m actually doing is using diagrams and flowcharts to create a virtual factory and production line for our (totally not manufacturing) business with some absolutely stunning results.
thanks ed.
considering that chris carpenter (the inventor of the google cash method was a client – i’ll take the comparison as a compliment.
rich
Rich,
Seems like a great idea to me! With the quality of your reports, you are sure to get a large amount of people clicking the links to get more info.
If I had to guess, you’ll surpass the number of opt ins that you got from the traditional methods. Your reports make any reader want more.
John Stiles
Rich, I just wanted to tell you I was in GPS, and it’s already doubled my business. The content was amazing, your commitment unparalleled, and the way you made sure you helped each one of us was truly inspiring.
I was also really impressed with my fellow gps’ers. I now understand why you are called the guru’s guru, and why your the go to guy for guys like Jay Abraham, John Carlton, and every other pro out there.
The tip you gave above worked for me like a charm – I wish I could show everyone who reads this the power of this tip, but I am not interested in exposing my lucrative niche to all the rest of your readers (sorry).
Keep up the good work! You are one of the good guys online today.
Hi Rich,
Interesting concept~
I do think you’ll get much wider distribution without the opt-in but I’ll be really curious to see what the conversaion rates wind up being after you implement this approach because if people don’t want to opt-in to get a free report, are they really going to be willing to go to the trouble of taking the added steps to register for each link they need to get enabled?
That’s also assuming they take the time to read all the way through the document and register for each link.
The beauty of this is that you’re testing the concept rather than debating the merits of it.
Hope it succeeds like crazy for you!
Another GPS member,
Michael
I like this idea. I believe I’ve seen it done before with successful results for the marketers that implemented this idea before.
Just make sure you use a PDF re-branding tool so that your affiliates can instantly rebrand the report with their own respective affiliate IDs/links.
For the valued JV partners, of course you wanna kiss their (you know what) and rebrand it FOR them. The less work on their part, the better it is to gain their cooperation.
I know the only JV offers I usually jump on are the ones where my potential partner has everything laid out for me, already branded, ready to just hit ‘SEND’ and fire away.
So, definitely go with this idea. It’s very killer…just make sure you use something like ViralPDF Brander or something like that so that your affiliates (and any more that come in as a result of the viral effect of the affiliate marketing) can instantly have their own report, ready to sling out and make money with.
Kudos,
T.M. Harris
tmharris.net
P.S. – When you do your first launch using this strategy, let me get a copy of the brandable report so I can give it to my subscribers…OK?
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen something like this before but not in the detail you’re talking about and DEFINITELY not in internet marketing, online sales, etc…
Sounds killer Rich and I will definitely keep a close on what you and your team cook up as well as the results that come from these ideas :-)
Hey Rich,
I remember that GPS question and I think it’s a fabulous idea. Hmmm, looks like the secret manuscript you gave me is a possible candidate…?
I look forward to hearing the results of this experiment (and of course participating =)). There’s a ton of information (both good, bad and terrible) floating around the web. What people would appreciate is assistance with applying the ‘free’ information. So tools are cool. Any shortcut, templates, checklists that make it easier for one to get to their destination are invaluable.
In certain cases, it’s like having someone do the “processing” for you, particularly when you’re in the heat of getting things done and having your attention interrupted and pulled in many directions.
Cheers,
Marian
Rich,
Is the “expanded” version of the report free with registration or does that become the paid OTO product?
Also, have you considered mixing free tool links with paid tool links so that the affiliates have more of an incentive to distribute your report?
You had mentioned on the call that each free report is a mini-catalogue of front-end products so I took that to mean that some of the links would lead to paid products. Right or wrong?
Rich,
What’s you take on why Web 2.0ers don’t want to give their name and address to opt in? I’m very curious about that.
Otherwise very good. Always interesting to evolve something to its next level.

Hey Rich,
Good stuff!
I tried the same thing in my ebook. Although my ebook is geared to B TO B ,the mistake I made is that I gated it even though I am a fan of David M. Scott. I read the synopsis of how successful his campagn was on marketing sherpa!
You don’t seem to promote/announce your stuff using PRESS RELEASE, DO YOU?
Anyway, with my ebook, I encourage them to complete a survey with a chance of winning $50.00.
This way, if I did not capture their names via the sign up page, I will get their name and email address after they must have completed the survey for a chance to win $50.00.
As soon as I finish writting this comment, I am going to demolish the gate and give users direct access to the ebook.
I think it makes a lot of sense indeed!
We are all caught up with doing things the same OLD way until one person decide to BRANCH OUT OR TAKE THE RISK SO TO SPEAK.
David, Seth,Brian Clark, just to name a few PROMOTED THEIR EBOOKS WWITHOUT ANY GATE and they had great success.
I am sure once you do it and others see how successful your promotion is, the rest will follow.
Follow- Follow according to “Fela” is natural I guess.
Really good stuff.
Very interesting.
Frank Kern and Trey Smith’s recent launch integrated this same idea. However, it was a physical product rather than a download.
Do you think this would work best for a physical product or a downloadable product?? Something to think about.
Rich
I have been playing around with this idea myself and use a combination where some reports require opt-ins and others don’t.
Any idea of what the fall away from download to read is.
I know that I am guilty of downloading too much stuff – and even opting in – and saving it to my hard drive and then never getting around to looking at it.
I’d also be interested in your thoughts on how well Cialdini’s law of reciprocation holds up with free digital stuff.
Because people know there is no cost on the giver’s part, I am seeing situations where there is no reciprocal obligation and that is even spilling over to where there is a cost.
For example, StomperNet’s Stomping The Search Engines.
I have no idea what the overall stats were but I was shocked at how many of my affiliate subscribers took the freebies and bailed out immediately.
Paul
Hey Rich,
I am looking forward to see your results with this method.
Another thing is that it’s less annoying for us (marketers with subscribers) to send this report because nobody has to optin in the first place.
I always enjoy reading your reports.
Franck
Thanks for the tips. I am new in the blogging world and am slowly building that reader base.
Just to be sure what specific report are you planning to implement this new tactic on? Is it your old reports or are you releasing a new report any time soon?
Thanks,
Mikael
Hey Rich,
I like this idea, especially if when people hit the link in the report you can help them feel ‘affirmed and privileged’ when they hit the ‘Member’ opt-in page.
Have you already split-tested this, or are you planning to run a comparison with your previous model?
Stephen
Hello Rich,
A nice & new creative approach, thanks a lot for sharing.
I am new into internet marketing, and am working – as an artist – on my first info product, and it`s really going to rock.
Since I am making some viral e-books as well, I wonder how you embed the affiliate links in the pdf files. Do you have any suggestions to automate this process? Or are you hiring people to add these links all manually? ;-)
Kindly,
Steven Vrancken

Viral ebook is definitely a great idea. I agree that you’ll surely get more downloads for your ebook if people are not required to sign in.
Your teaser tactic is brilliant to ensure you increase the size of your list from all the people having your report. Just need to ensure your teaser is something of significant value to them.
Thanks for the great idea.

This falls in line with what I’ve found with opt-in pages. My opt-in pages have done very well when they are a report onto themselves. I just start giving right away. Then opting in for the next step (free report or email series) is just natural.
But, I’ve also been thinking this way, where I’d give the report away versus putting it on the opt-in page. Really, though, we may just be talking about medium versus whether to opt-in or not.
Interesting concept. I think the whole greybox thing will work greatly, because the content is “righttttttt there” all they have to do is opt-in.
I would incorporate this into a launch but I’m not quite sure about not getting an opt in. It would be an interesting test to do a launch with opt-in’s and without.
Hmmm….
Very interesting….
I am a participate in the GPS Coaching Program. I must say that Rich is great. He more than over delivers with his products and if you follow his coaching methods and put the ideas to use you can become successful online.
I love the no opt-in idea because people will truly take advantage of the free product or the ebook, read it, and possibly purchase from the embedded links. Curiosity will get the best of them, and they will join the membership to learn more about the other items.

I think that could work great, i can see how it could be very powerful.
For a start people wont be so forced to opt in, so potentially increasing the number of downloads, then once they are reading and like what they see they will opt in for the extra expanded version.
Very good Rich, will be interesting to see the results.

Hi Rich,
Great New Business Concept, aren’t you worried that when this new model catches on like the opti boxes did, everyone and their mother will copy your technique and over saturate the market once more?
Ricardo
Hi Rich, I had recently come across some reports that didn’t require an opt-in and I wondered why they chose to not get an opt-in for their report but now it makes complete sense.
I really like the idea behind it and can see how it can reach more people and ultimately get more opt-ins so I will be sure to try it sometime.
Thanks again for always sharing such good stuff!
Lori
This is a really good post, Mr. Shefren.
When we launched our first, original site (Sunday September 28th), we had a similar concept in mind.
The site is a blog-driven, charity-based site dedicated to honor the men & women of our Armed Forces.
As you know, e-mail marketing is one of the best ways to market one’s products and/or services. That said, our audience is mainly military personnel. The last thing we want to do is ask for their name & e-mail address so we can offer them stuff. Their time is way too precious for that.
So, we blog about our site and invite people to sign up to our RSS feed. That’s how we get traffic to it.
Thanks again. This is really good stuff. Glad to see that we are of like minds.
Best,
-K

10% of after-tax proceeds benefits military charities.
Ok. I am familiar with the concept. I love your willingness to experiment. Here’s a little bit of a curve ball, though. I think you have to be very careful with the way you set people up for the experience. If you proclaim that your report is “free-no email required” but then proceed to load the report with links that not only require an email op-tin, but payment to receive the full value of the information, you may undermine the trust of your prospects.
If you use this method, you must make sure that the valuable information in the report stands alone opt-in or not, purchase or not, or people may feel duped after the first link or two and choose to stop reading. As long as you are completely transparent up front and let people know what to expect, fine. IMHO counting the money may not be the ultimate measurement of the success of the experiment. People may, indeed, reluctantly pull out their credit cards and make the incremental purchases link by link, but, if at the end of the experience they feel “sold to” rather than “grateful and connected to you”, does this really count as a win?
Further, how likely are non-affiliates to share such a link laden report with others? Even worse, for those passing on such a report, what happens to their credibility if there is such a strong profit motive in their passing the info along? What good is the optin or even the short term sale if you have lost the trust and confidence of your customer?
Personally, I do not mind opting in for information that I am interested in. It’s a trade-off I am willing to make up front with eyes wide open. Surely, not everyone feels this way.
Rich, I know from years of doing business with you that you are committed to giving great value in an ethical way. Your next project will be structured to over deliver, as always. Because of the goodwill and powerful reputation you’ve developed, your results with this technique may not be as easily duplicated by others with lighter track records. It’ll be fun to participate and learn. Thanks for including us in the conversation. Here’s to a happy and prosperous New Year to you and to us all! -WP
Don’t agree with the last commentator at all. I love this idea, in fact I think I’ve seen some vague and less focused examples of PDFs that did this on the web.
The document is the vehicle that builds trust as the reader gets sucked in to the content.
So, if I’m reading how to better manage my time and then see a link to a product that will get me there without the overhead of doing it myself – and all it costs me is an opt-in – I’m all over that, more so than I would have been if I had to give up my email address before I was sucked into the content of your great reports.
This is about attracting people that don’t already love your work and greatly expanding the proliferation of your great reports. Rock on Rich!
Hey Rich,
Happy 09′ to all of you at SP and to your readers as well.
I really like this idea.
I can agree with both sides of this. As a reader, I don’t want to opt-in unless I know what I’m getting into or I trust the writer.
On the other hand as a writer, I don’t want to lose potential readers or prospects by not being upfront about the purpose or intent of my report.
By adding links in the report that require opt-ins for more info or the next step, won’t readers feel duped?
I look forward to learning more on this subject and how I can hopefully apply it..
Thanks Again Rich..
To Health And Success,
Shane in Wyo
PS.. Great story about the Christmas sweater.. We can always use a good moral to live by..
Always be thankful..Some have it much worse…
Ingenious thinking. Thank you for your powerful site and knowledge.
i think some of you are looking at this with the wrong intentions…
the idea is create the content, give it away for free, BUT…
CREATE TOOLS THAT MAKE “THE DOING” EASY and give access to the tools for those who are willing to opt-in.
The reason: more web-surfers are used to “registering” for tools than they are for free content.
My intention was never to suggest to anyone to create a tease. Instead it’s more to create an understanding which would create an appreciation for the tools.
In other words my reports will continue to strive to give an all encompassing view – but tools that provide shortcuts (like the reputation monitor) would require an opt-in.
Hope that clarifies, and sorry if I was unclear in some way.
rich
Hi Rich,
I don’t think this is a good idea.
Your reports are more valuable because they look “exclusive”.
You need to to register to get them and only a few can get them (before they are removed from the site). They are exclusive, and free for a limited-time, and that’s the “reason” why you’re asking their email… because “you don’t want to make them public”… since they are not actually meant to be “free forever”… implying to the visitor that they are so valuable that you might actually charge for them in the near future… sort of creating a scarcity-effect.
Making it free.. without an opt-in.. might make your Reports look WORTHLESS. Anyone can get them… Why isn’t he selling them? Oh I see, if he is giving them away for free.. just because.. then it must be some promotional bogus…
Look at download.com. They have new software released for free everyday. Anyone can download them. Do these new sofwares succeed when they are released as free on Download.com? No… The first thought a visitor has is… if it’s free then it must be worthless… or some “hidden demo”.
Now.. you put the SAME product on an opt-in page and make it look like the product/report of the year, with previews, and say “you can get access for a limited time”… as you pitch with your own reports… and you get a whole different story… and make people actually DESIRE your product/report.
I invite everyone to reply to my comments and try to refute my arguments.
Regards,
Rod S.
I agree Rod S, you just listed all the benefits of using a well built and well written opt-in form. :)
What if there was also an opt-in on the main page, but everywhere else it is able to be downloaded without opting in? Then it gives that site where you can download for free extra perceived value, making even more people want to offer it on there website.
So you still get that exclusive feel , but also feel like the website owner is doing you a favour by letting you by pass the opt-in, it just comes down to the copywriting. Just a thought :)
Although I can see this losing its value after awhile if everyone decides to do it on the frontend side of things overtime (what doesn’t?), people will download anyway and once creating so much value inside the ebook if at any point you get prompted with an opt-in you’ll happily fill it in, getting them to optin from the inside would make for a better quality list also.
It would be a welcomed change, there has been plenty of times I have entered my details into an opt-in form out of curiosity and not been impressed with the product / report, which leaves me on yet another persons list that I have to get off before I get emails that I just won’t read. Ok its not hard, but it is a hassle , I would like to know what I can expect from this person before giving my details to them (Like you get when reading there blog first ..etc).
I think this is a Great Idea Rich and I look forward to seeing the results you have with this.
Thanks for the tips, i’m new to this make money online world but will surely become pro by following the tips from the pro. Appreciated for the writing
This is a great idea. But this could be improved if your pdf report has the “ability” to show an opt-in form… And this can be done with this:
http://www.pdfpup.com
I’m the owner of the software, and I programmed it for this purpose :)
This was a great online marketing lesson, thank you for it
