This past Sunday morning, Debi and I piled the girls in the car and drove to Wellington, 40 miles north, to have brunch with some old friends from New York.
We took the Maserati and raced up I-95. It’s a great car (Ferrari engine) and interior straight out of Architectural Digest.
The stereo was cranking out everyone’s favorite tunes–Miley Cyrus (for Elle), Jonas Brothers (for Ava), & Allman Brothers (for me + Debi). Everyone was taking turns singing solos, and we were having a blast.
Until …
We reached the restaurant, Johnny G’s, and Debi tried to parallel park in a tight spot while I was belting out my own rendition of the Allman’s “Crazy Love.”
Her first attempt was…how should I put it…was off a bit (ok, maybe off a LOT).
So Debi decided she needed to concentrate on the task at hand. I was told in no uncertain terms to “shut-up”, the radio was muted, and there was absolute silence.
She came in for her second attempt…and NAILED IT! In fact, it was a better job than yours truly has ever done.
And, that my friend, is where today’s entrepreneurial lesson is hidden.
You see, there are four stages of learning:
Stage (1) - Unconscious Incompetence - you don’t know what you don’t know Stage (2) - Conscious Incompetence - you now know what you don’t know Stage (3) - Conscious Competence - you now know it, but you have to
concentrate to use what you know Stage (4) - Unconscious Competence - you know it, and you can do it without
thinking about it
Let’s take learning the alphabet as an example….
There was a time you didn’t even know what the alphabet was or that it had twenty six letters (stage 1).
Next, you were told about the alphabet and you realized you didn’t know it (stage 2).
Then you learned the alphabet, but you really had to concentrate to draw each letter and not confuse a “b” with “d” (stage 3).
And now–hopefully–you can write words, sentences, and even pages without thinking about the letters themselves (stage 4).
So, back to Debi for a sec….
Debi is unconsciously competent (stage 4) when it comes to driving. BUT she’s only consciously competent (stage 3) when it comes to parallel parking. And you know what? For driving and parking that’s good enough.
“So, where’s the lesson in that?” you ask.
Easy there, Chachi, I’m getting to it - first, let me ask you a question:
Are you unconsciously competent (stage 4) at your money making activities?
For example - can you write an optimized blog post without having to think about keywords and their placement? Or an email with an effective hook, and a compelling call to action?
If you’re like most entrepreneurs and marketers, odds are you can’t - and it costs you more than you realize. And here’s why…
When you are only consciously competent (stage 3):
(1) You’re more prone to make a mistake
(2) You’re forced doing it slowly - meaning you also make money slowly
(3) You can only do it in certain places (with your reference material) at certain times (when you can concentrate), so you don’t make money as often
as you could
(4) You never achieve mastery so you’ll quickly fall back into conscious incompetence if you take a few days off.
This is important. Come closer. Listen…
The biggest leap in income happens when an entrepreneur becomes unconsciously competent (stage 4) in their money making activities.
Because it’s easier. And they can do it faster and more often, with better success. In essence, they spend their time doing instead of fumbling.

I’m talking about taking your skills to such a high level of mastery - you could do them half-asleep!

CALLER: I’m going to be re-launching my product this week. And in terms of a launch strategy, I guess I don’t even want to try to compete with all these big guys that are doing these massive launches right now.
I’d rather just recruit JVs and affiliates and say, you know, "Here’s everything you need to do this. Just promote it as your schedule permits." Does it make sense to do it that way?
RICH: First of all, I want to commend you on sticking with the product launch strategy in general. I’ve preached time and time again how Jeff Walker’s Product Launch Formula changed the way I do business (not to mention increasing my bottom line tremendously). So by taking that approach, you’re definitely on the right track to success.
And what you said certainly makes sense. I can understand how daunting it might be to launch against some of the massive promotions out there. You almost get swallowed up in the mix.
But another option you might want to look at is the "rolling launch". This is where you basically go from affiliate to affiliate and construct an individualized launch for their particular list.
For example, you could go to one of your affiliates and set up a free teleseminar, free webinar, or even a video streaming event for their list. You give away some good content so they’ll get to know you better–all while creating a buzz and establishing yourself as an authority on the subject.
Then, you start cranking up the launch engine to build anticipation and scarcity, which finally culminates in a profitable launch for both you and the affiliate. Then you move onto the next affiliate in line.
Another great thing about the rolling launch is that it tends to actually be even more powerful than the "big bang" launches as far as cash flow purposes. Because in the end, you’ll most likely sell more products by hitting your partners individually as opposed to all at once.
The key to making this launch approach work is by generating some interaction with the actual list owner. Because your prospects from that list don’t know who you are, but they definitely know who the list owner is.
So if the list owner is going to be on a call with you or doing something interactively with you, then you’ll get a much higher draw. See how it works?
Now, let’s take another question…

My special guest was one of the world’s leading business coaches. And man, did he every BLOW ME AWAY with his some of brilliant observations on growing a business in today’s economy.
I had a TON of takeaways from this call, including:
"Recession" is basically the reallocation of resources from the scared to the bold. You just need to decide which one you’re going to be…and not let anyone (especially the media) tell you otherwise.
Even though consumer spending in durables–like furniture, cars, appliances, etc–is down, people are still buying in other areas. Things like services and ecommerce products are still moving along at a fast clip. Which means you have the opportunity RIGHT NOW to take business away from competitors.
One of the biggest reasons why people fail to grow their businesses is because many of them are transactional. They’re like stock brokers and mortgage brokers–they want to get in, get out and be done. There’s no planning for the future, so their entire business plan is doomed from the start.
When I heard all of this, I was nodding my head in agreement.
Because it’s true–everyone who wants to start a successful business seems to run into roadblocks almost right away.
What I’ve found is that it’s either a time issue, a lack of knowledge, or they’re so focused on the "magic pill" that they’re missing out on what’s REALLY important.
My guest goes into much more detail about this, and his insights are brilliant to say the least. But in a nutshell, here’s 5 highly potent business principles to follow from the get-go.
Do yourself a favor…write these down and pin them to your wall:
Concentrate on profits, not revenue
Monetize your customers more efficiently
Generate more consistent business opportunities
Improve your conversion of customers
Utilize your most precious resources better
Stay focused on all of these 5 things, and you’ll be well on your way to success.

And so far, we’ve had some killer sessions–so good in fact, that we’ve decided to let our blog readers in on them.
Over the next few days and weeks, we’ll be posting some of the best questions along with my answers. So without further adieu, let’s dive into the first question…
CALLER: You’ve normally used the "blogging and report" style of launch in the past with great success. But you mentioned earlier that you may use a different style in the future. Can I ask what you’re planning to do differently?
RICH: First off, there are a lot of benefits to incorporating a blog with the release of a report. Because many people won’t link to an opt-in page. But they feel safer linking to a blog page that talks about the report.
So I’ve benefited greatly from people linking to these types of blogs. And the result has been a tremendous amount of traffic to the download page coming from these links.
Plus, there’s the added benefit of the positive comments on the blog about the report. Like I talked about in the Attention Age Doctrine 2, these comments get spidered by Google and turn up high in the rankings for related keywords–which gives us more exposure, driving even more traffic and more downloads. Very, very powerful.
However, to answer your question, we’re going to test a different method in the future–one that I think will be highly successful. And here’s how it works…
In our research, we’ve found that the Web 2.0 community is fine with registering for a toll, application, or template, but they’re just not crazy about opt-in boxes.
So I’m going to take the report and give it away for free with no opt-in whatsoever. All you have to do is download.
Inside will be a variety of links to shortcuts, templates and tools that are closely related to the content and offer an "expanded version" of the report.
To get to these goodies, you have to click on a link that takes you to a different page. When you do, you’ll see the "extra". But then the page quickly grays out and a light box will appear, saying you have to be a registered user of the site to access it.
For example, in the Internet Business Manifesto, I could easily add a link in the report that takes you to a spreadsheet or a program that helps you establish the value of your time by imputing a few numbers. But you must register to have access.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: Won’t forgoing the opt-in substantially reduce the size of the list you’re trying to build? Personally, I don’t think so. And here’s why…
This new method will allow you to get greater penetration into the market because your report can be in more places. Plus, you can give your affiliates copies of the report with their affiliate links imbedded, which can even widen the net further.
My belief is that this could actually result in more opt-ins. And in talking with my good friend David Merriman Scott, author of "The New Rules of Marketing and PR", he agrees. In fact, David estimates that we may get up to 50 times more downloads with this new model.
Now, I don’t know if that’s going to happen (I’d LOVE it if it did!). But what I do know is that by not requiring an opt-in and having the affiliate links embedded in the report, I can go to practically any blog that makes money with Adsense and have them give it away for me.
And even if we do a remotely poor job, they’ll still make money by allowing people to download our report. Because people will stay on their site longer, increasing the chances of getting clicks on Adsense and other affiliate offers. So they get to give away something valuable for free AND make a few bucks while they’re at it.

Personally, it’s one of my favorite times of the year. Because I get to look back on all the success of the previous 365 days and look forward in anticipation to the next 365.

But like the title of the post says, there are a few things you can do to virtually guarantee your success in 2009. And no, they have nothing to do with buying a lottery ticket.
The secret to achieving the wealth, freedom, and lifestyle of your dreams is to actually DO it. Taking action is the most important part of any process, and the biggest player in your success…or your failure.
Because let’s face it–the following scenario has happened to all of us at one time or another.
It’s like this…
–The new year hits, and we come out of the gate firing on all cylinders.
–We’ve got tons of ideas, stacks of big plans, and we’re ready to take on the world.
–But then it happens.
–Real life sets in once again. Stuff gets in the way…projects get derailed…launches become sidetracked.
–And before you can sing another chorus of “Auld Lang Syne”, it’s April. And you haven’t done ONE thing yet.
Ouch. Sound familiar?
I know it does for me. I went through this cycle numerous times. And I’m absolutely certain that I’m millions of dollars poorer for it today.
But there are a few things you can do to avoid this trap. Here’s 3 tips that can help you get moving in the right direction…
1) Shut Up: How many times have we spouted off about our ideas, only to never see them come to fruition?
I used to love talking about my plans, ideas, and strategies. But then I realized something: I enjoyed talking about it more than I usually enjoyed actually rolling up my sleeves and doing it.
Now, I hold back that urge to talk. Instead I channel that energy towards the act of doing. This increases my desire to get started, which is usually all it takes.
2) Reduce Shelf Life: Have you ever noticed ideas are more like milk then they are like wine? It’s true–the longer an idea sits around, the more stinky and worthless it becomes.
Because if you let an idea sit in your head without being acted on, it becomes weaker and less promising.
After a few days the details get hazy…and after a week it’s forgotten completely.
That’s why we need to cut the time from idea to implementation. Act as soon as you can with whatever you have to begin with. Doesn’t matter whether it’s at the beginning, the middle, or the very end–just grab a piece of the puzzle and jump into it immediately.
If you start by making smaller decisions more quickly–without overanalyzing–you’ll gain momentum and REALLY start cranking away.
3. Dive In: I know it sounds simple, but when this is what it all boils down to.
If you need to write something, force yourself to sit down and write. Put pen to paper. Brainstorm. Doodle. By moving your hands you’ll stimulate the flow of ideas and inspire yourself.
If you need to create a video, sit down and start recording. Doesn’t matter what comes out, just as long as you press record and begin doing something. You’ll begin to see the possibilities.
Same goes with audio. Or product creation. Or whatever it is you’re trying to start on. Action must precede action, and the only way you’re going to see success with your project is to actually do something that moves you towards the final goal.
If you put these 3 things into practice, I can almost guarantee that you’ll come out a winner in 2009.
And by this time next year, instead of singing “Auld Lang Syne”…you’ll be singing “We’re In The Money…”

It’s been rumored all over the internet, I’ve been teasing you about it for a while, and I’ve even let it slip in a few emails and blog posts.
But what you’re hearing is true–there’s a new report on the way.
