      Open Thread - Attention Age Doctrine

    • As I toil away on research into Part 2 of the Attention Age Doctrine, a creative idea came to mind.

      How about having an “open thread” on my blog that invites comments from you – my readers – about what you’d like to see in Part 2.
       
      What are some the concerns you have about focusing attention on your business?

      What are some of the top challenges you face when dealing with interruptions to your work flow?

      What challenges have you come up against in getting the attention of your market?
       
      I’ve made a commitment to have fun this weekend as well, so that may have something to do with this request. But don’t let that discourage you. If you can find time in your fun activities to give this blog some attention, I’d greatly appreciate it – and so would your fellow readers.

      Are You Really An Entrepreneur? Your Aspirations Will Tell You

    • Last night I got lucky. No, it’s not what you think (remember I am happily married) - here’s what happened-

      I was in San Francisco yesterday preparing for my upcoming client seminar Feb 10+11.

      Anyway, I took the red-eye flight from San Francisco to Atlanta cause I am speaking this weekend at Jim Edwards’ seminar here in Atlanta.

      Well, I am not much for sleeping on planes - it’s actually one of the best places for me to get work done because I am strapped in and the only other alternative to sitting and working is going to the bathroom.

      Back to how I got lucky.

      The person sitting next to me was a successful entrepreneur whose name you’d recognize if you read even half the number of business books I do. So I introduced myself, and to my surprise he actually knew my name and had read the manifesto. (Apparently it’s been passed around in a lot of circles outside of internet marketing which is why we still have over 100 people a day opting in to get a copy!)

      We passionately shared our insights about small business, big business and where an entrepreneur fits into the process. We agreed on many things - but there was one especially important point he told me about, that he’d figured out after his second success, which I didn’t realize it until my third success.

      That’s what I want to share with you today.

      He said he knew he was really an entrepreneur when he started his second business - when his aspirations were to one day be the Senior Vice President in charge of acquisitions. When I pressed him to clarify what he meant - he told me that all the excitement for him comes during the startup phase and that he hates having to create all the structures and processes needed to build and grow the business. So, by his second business he decided he wouldn’t do that all himself and instead he would get the business going and then bring in the right CEO, President, and people to work it — until the business grew so successful that he only served one small role in the company — the one that was once just an idea in his head to head up acquisitions.

      I was struck by how similar our experiences were because I had a similar shift when I started Strategic Profits. I knew my current role, in the content creation side and coaching successful entrepreneurs, was what I wanted to do the most and that the day to day operations, marketing, etc., would be handled by my superstar team. And it’s happened…

      If you are a real entrepreneur this should sound very appealing to you. You get to do more of what you want as you build and grow. Plus, as my company continues to grow and I see our profits climbing, I also notice that my calendar is getting lighter and lighter. The company that my ideas gave birth to is now grown up enough to take care of itself without me shouldering the bulk of the day to day load - actually it has already started to take care of me.

      And this gives me tremendous freedom. Which is the whole reason I am entrepreneur in the first place - to create and be free.

      Zero G
      Two weeks ago I was reminded of how important freedom and fun are to me. Yanik Silver, Mike Filsaime, and yours truly went on a special flight called a Zero-G flight. It’s an incredible experience where you get to feel true weightlessness.

      After the experience, Mike Filsaime and I were talking about how much fun we had and how important it is to make time for fun. We also promised each other we would make sure to plan a few extra fun experiences for 2007.

      Think for a second. When was the last time you really had fun? Not just a giggle, but when you had a big stupid smile stretched across your face and you were laughing and feeling like you did when you were just a kid playing?

      If it’s been over a month - then you’ve got to ask yourself: Why am I working so hard? What position do I aspire to have in my company? And what could I put on my ‘to do’ list that would be incredibly fun?

      I’ve got more to share with you about what I was doing in San Francisco and the plane ride but I’ve got to run right now. Check back on Monday.

      Would You Like Agora’s $270 Million Marketing Plan Applied To Your Biz?

    • I’m tired, my head hurts, and I think I gained 7 pounds this past week, but what I have to tell you is extremely important so here I am writing.

      I don’t want to be here in front of my computer writing this blog post. I want to be back in Paris, hanging out with the all the division heads of Agora, brainstorming more clever schemes to easily increase profits.

      Writing sucks. I hate to write (although I do love to have written things). Anyone that claims they love to write is either a compulsive liar or a social misfit. I mean, what sort of perverted soul would rather sit and exert the tremendous effort it takes to fill a blank screen alone when he could be sipping vintage wine, smoking Cuban cigars, eating chocolate croissants, and brainstorming with the most successful information marketers on the planet.

      If you are wondering why am I negative today? The answer is simple: I just got back from my short worldwide tour and I am just now getting over the final lingering of Jet lag.

      Last week, I left beautiful Boca Raton and spent 2 days in Baltimore (Mike Filsaimevs seminar), 1 day in Las Vegas (the World Internet Summit) and 1 day in San Diego (Frank Kern’s Underachiever Weekend Conference), then I went directly to France and spent the rest of the week at the Agora Castle with Bill Bonner, Michael Masterson, Porter Stansberry, MaryEllen Tribby, and many other marketing veterans who contribute to the staggering $270 million in annual sales that Agora clears.

      You’ve got to hand it to that bunch over at Agora. Think about it - $270 million selling nothing but ideas - newsletters, special reports, e-zines, and so on.

      Not bad money for emailing out a bunch of electrons, is it?

      Thatvs why I am so excited about the upcoming projects I have lined up with them. It’s rare to get the opportunity to learn from a group as successful as Agora is, and I plan on seizing every opportunity to work with and learn from this ultra successful company. This leads me to why I am writing to you right now (as opposed to sitting outside and watching the ocean).

      A few weeks ago Agora invited me to speak at their big fall Internet marketing conference here in south Florida.

      My initial reaction was “You’ve got to be kidding!”

      As you know, I’ve been crazy busy lately and the last thing on my mind was ANOTHER commitment. But the more I thought about it, the more it intrigued me - mainly because of the USP for their event.

      In a nutshell, it’s this: Come to the conference with an idea for the kind of products or services you’d be interested in selling online. They’ll run it through their team of marketing experts and hand you a “customized” plan for building a profitable Internet business. Don’t have an idea? They’ll give you one, by helping you determine your strengths and refining your passions.

      Yes, I’m sure a lot of this “marketing plan” you get will be boilerplate. But here’s the interesting thing…

      When I look at what makes Agora’s model work so well, it turns out that “boilerplate” is exactly how they’ve been so successful:

      * Step 1: Develop a multi-million dollar repeatable formula for selling nearly free information at 1,000%+ markups.

      * Step 2: Find new niches to apply the formula to.

      * Step 3: Repeat as needed (in their case to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year).

      They’ve already perfected step 1 so basically you just have to show up, absorb it, and then go off and apply steps 2 and 3 to your situation.

      This is just what they do within their company. It’s a very unique outfit built from dozens of ‘mini-companies’ within itself that knock each other off. But the information market just keeps growing and growing and growing…

      So after some thought, I realized it would be kind of fun to take them up on their offer… and in the process show off some new ideas I’ve been working on myself in the past few weeks. As a result, I’ve decided to join them at their “Early to Rise Info-Marketing Bootcamp”.

      The way I figure it, if I am willing to hop on a plane and fly to France on a moments notice, or to basically put the growth of my own company on hold to partner with them so I can learn more… then I need to tell you about what may be your only opportunity to learn from the very same people that I do.

      In fact, now that I’ve agreed to be a presenter, they’ve gone and practically made me the host of the thing. I’ll be talking at two or three sessions for each of the three days of the conference, handing out very practical advice on starting and growing your online business.

      Decrease The Input… Increase The Output

    • I intended to write this blog post about a week ago.

      The reason I am writing this post now is that so many things have been happening and, changing for the better. I kept getting more and more info I wanted to share with you. But, I can’t wait any longer. Sometimes, you can have too many good developments in your life and business that, even one more piece of good news is not welcome because you simply have too much on your plate already.

      Bottom line - too much is simply too much no matter what. Often, having too many great options leaves you frozen instead of giving you momentum, because just when you start thinking the option you’ve chosen is really the best choice, the other killer idea on that yellow pad laying on your desk may be even better, so you reevaluate, and reevaluate and you end up making absolutely the worst decision of them all… NO DECISION!

      It’s a scary thought isn’t it? It absolutely sucks, so I’m just going to start writing.

      First, I’ve noticed most struggling internet marketers are nothing more than hardcore information junkies. They just want to learn, absorb… absorb… absorb and they simply don’t have the power to turn off this constant craving for more.

      But you have to be able to turn it off. Because it’s one of the single biggest obstacles to achieving lasting success online or offline.

      Stated more simply- as long as you’re inputting, you’re not outputting.

      Yet, getting everything you want out of your life hinges on your output.

      So if you’re an info junkie, you must go on an information diet. Now I don’t know about you, but I know that when the double stuff Oreos are sitting on the top shelf in the kitchen it’s a whole lot harder resisting the temptation. What I mean is this: you’ve got to get all that extra info out of sight so you don’t even feel the temptation.

      Make your office a rehab, no information is allowed to come in whatsoever for the next week. The only information you can have is the information you create. Stop studying, stop analyzing and start creating. Develop urgency in everything you do for the next week and you’ll be blown away at your level of output.

      Sadly though it’s not enough.

      Because if you really want to grow your business you are going to have to answer a single question that almost no struggling entrepreneur ever asks themselves. You want to know what it is? Of course you do, so let’s press on…

      Now listen, don’t let the simplicity of the question fool you because it’ll be easy to dismiss it, but I promise you that if you do, you’ll never even achieve a fraction of what you are capable of. Ok, so here it is:

      What Work Are You Willing To Leave Undone?

      The sooner you realize that you can’t read everything, nor can you cross off every item on your to do list the better. Because at that very moment you are forced to realize that you absolutely must prioritize no matter what.

      You see, realizing you can’t do everything helps you determine what you really must be doing, and realizing you can’t read everything forces you to decide which
      information you must read.

      Now if you are wondering how you make these difficult decisions, have no fear because I have your answer. And it’s simple… You have to know what you want and what you must do to get it. Once you know then you can make effective decisions about what you should be doing, who you should be talking to, and what you should be studying.

      So quickly, do you know what your top three objectives are right now in your business? Are they quantifiable, concisely stated, at your fingertips, so you always know precisely what you should be working on?

      If your answer is yes - congratulations you are on your way towards business success. But, if you can’t rattle them off in rapid fire then it’s time to get serious and figure out what you really want, what you are willing to do to get it, and what steps you must take to achieve it.

      Like I said in the beginning of this post, I’ve got a lot more to tell you - but it will have to wait until tomorrow — because I need to get some sleep. But before you run off, tell me what you think by posting your comments.

      It’s Not Always About Trying Harder

      The past week was fantastic. In my elite coaching program I introduced my clients to their strengths using a test also used by Fortune 500 companies like Motorola, Microsoft, Intel, American Express, etc… I actually can’t wait until September when I can introduce my Business Growth System Members this amazing test and the powerful process they will go through.

      What’s really interesting is for a few of my elite clients their test scores came back with the label “In Transition”. You see, many of these clients had been working incredibly hard with minimal results. And the test pointed out to them that they needed to stop what they were currently doing and regroup and then choose an alternative route.

      The common theme for my “In Transition” clients was attempting to do many of the popular Internet money making strategies with no consideration of what they were good at, or what they enjoyed doing. As if their bank account wasn’t enough of a clue, now they were getting psychological proof that the methods they were trying were not going to lead to entrepreneurial success.

      So what about you?

      Is it getting easier or more difficult to increase your profits?

      Are you working longer hours or less hours?

      Remember, in business you don’t get an A for effort - it’s all about the results you are creating. And the easiest place to achieve spectacular results is where your strengths allow you to easily get them. And that’s why it is so very important to play to your strengths.

      If you’ve been struggling in your business and it’s not getting any easier to produce the desired results that you want, it’s time to get real. That means take a good look at yourself and really considering whether or not you are following the right path for yourself.

      If you are not on the right path - it’s time to stop what you are currently doing and begin your quest to find a business that plays to your strengths.

      Is Business Just Common Sense?

    • Is business success just common sense? A lot of people think so. They think if youre smart and you work hard, you will be successful. But you know what? Most people are wrong because its not common sense to success in business.

      How do I know?

      First of all, most businesses fail, so it takes uncommon sense to win. The biggest contributor to the high business failure rates is that most people were never trained on how to really make a business run and grow. Most people were never taught what an entrepreneur really is. and who you have to be in your business. Because of that, theres a major price thats being paid.

      The price is the overwhelming majority of businesses fail, and even those that very few that last and still survive most of them are just glorified jobs, with the owner working his / her butt off to make a salary. Theyve got no freedom. Theyre probably working harder than they would ever work for somebody else., and have little to show for it.

      Its a fair statement to say that most small businesses, almost all small businesses, do not reach their potential. The big question is why? Why dont most small businesses reach their potential?

      And while the truth stings the research backs it up, the main reason for the sad state of affairs for small business online and offline is the entrepreneurs lack of skills and knowledge (Dunn and Bradstreet).

      So what are you doing (besides reading this) to improve your entrepreneurial skills?

      In my coaching programs Module #1 is completely focused on becoming a better entrepreneur, and many of my most successful clients have told me that right after that first session they already started thinking differently.

      Heres a few of the most recent comments about the first module from current clients:

      —Tons of info. Very fast paced, with no fluff or filler. Very refreshing. My mind was totally engaged for the entire 2 hours.

      —It was great and it was overwhelming and a little intimidating. Good - what an amount of information to learn, how many changes to make… Guess the best way is to follow your steps and do whatever you figured out to do first and then worry about the rest.

      —In my opinion, very valuable information, and lot’s of it. The call was a great overview, and I plan on spending time going through the material, taking notes and answering the questions to have it really sink in before the next call. I could see my perspective changing even as the call was proceeding.

      —We’ve worked hard at building our business and have some success, but we knew we needed a shift to get to the next level. Today I had the what, how and why laid out in front of me with the challenge to take responsibility and make it happen! What a great start!

      —This call was great, TRULY FABULOUS, but I hope every call is not exactly like this. My head hurts.

      —Thanks for sharpening the cutting edge of designing and building a highly profitable business!

      —This call absolutely blew me away. The quality of the material was 1st class and the amount was nothing short of mind boggling. It was difficult to keep up at times and that, I believe, was the most powerful aspect of Rich’s unique and cutting edge style. I will be going over this stuff in my head 24 hours a day even if I’m not aware of it. This material is truly inspiring.

      Results Or Excuses, Which Are You Known For?

    • First some housekeeping

      Its still crazy here at the office, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. We have finally finished finalizing the list of our 11 week clients and we expect to have our 12 month customer list finalized today.

      Wednesday we had our intro call for 11 week members and it was fantastic. Today we have the intro call for the 12 month members and I am buzzing with excitement.

      We have chosen the technology that we will be using temporarily to deliver the content and managing the resource center, and man is it hot, you will absolutely go nuts over it! Its looking like it will open for business on Monday and weve got some great bonuses in store for all of my new members (both 11 week and 12 month clients).

      Weve also set up our online scheduling system that allows our 11 week clients to schedule their own appointments and even reschedule their appointments without any of my staff having to get involved.

      With all that great news you might be wondering why the headline to this post reads Results or Excuses, well, allow me to break things down for you.

      Even with careful planning and testing Murphy (of Murphys Law) has been working overtime here at Strategic Profits. Here are just two (there were more) of the presents that Murphy has dropped on strategic profits over the past week:

      –The speed of the orders coming into our system crushed our PayPal integration which left us with incomplete lists of clients for both programs. (this required to manually rebuild both lists by going through our PayPal account and our shopping cart system and analyzing each and every transaction to see the disposition for each and every person)

      –Our email exchange server somehow developed a bug and so no emails that were sent out from Rich@StrategicProfits.com were received. I have 3 virtual assistants answering the emails that I receive so you can imagine the number of emails we are talking about.

      I can hear members of my staff screaming at me right now, Rich, why are you writing about this on the blog? Keep it a secret! But you know what? Theres a very important lesson to be learned here and I dont mind sharing our challenges to help you understand a very important business lesson.

      My experience in business, after starting and growing my own businesses and working with some of the best internet companies, in business after all is said and done (and unfortunately there is usually a lot more said than done) bad things will still happen.

      And thats why I am proud of my team, because as we get ready to close out this week and I find myself writing this post when you strip everything away you are left with one of two things Results or Excuses, and I am proud of our results this week.

      What about you? Are you proud or the results you accomplished this week or do you have a bunch of excuses as to why you havent accomplished anything of significance? What about for the past month or year?

      Heres the big takeaway from this post, no matter what time frame you are looking at (day, week, month, year, or your entire life) if you are achieving the results you want congratulations, but if you arent then all youve got is excuses.

      The results you want and the excuses you use are mutually exclusive, they cannot coexist.

      My virtual staff grew from 3 to 7 this week, Dan and Sheila have been working lots of overtime, and I have even rolled up my sleeves and gotten my hands dirty. And the net result is weve gotten a lot of great reults this week because we were simply unwilling to let any excuses get in our way.

      If youve got more excuses in your life than you do results, start keeping a list of the most common excuses you give for not achieving the results you want. Its the same in your business too, if youre staff is delivering more excuses than results start keeping a list of the excuses that you are given.

      Your job - whether its you or your staff generating the excuses, is to get rid of the most common ones that keep rearing their ugly heads. But Ill tell you how to do that in a future post. For now, take a look at yourself and your business, and decide whether youre better at generating results or excuses. Then make your list

      Sunday Night Update…

    • A quick update and a further explanation as we close out this week.

      The programs are going to be amazing, and I have been busy finalizing the materials. If you thought the free materials were good, be prepared to be WOWed! They really are that good.

      While I’ve been busy working on the content (from my home office-thank god!), everyone else in my organization is working at a frenzied pace dealing with the overwhelming demand that introducing 700 new clients into our company in less than a week has caused.

      There are many of you that still need to be added to our customer database. If you are in the 11 week program and have not received any emails from us please email Rich@strategicProfits.com with the subject line “Missing 11 Week.” If you are in the 12 month program, please be patient for now. We are adding the new clients from the 12 month program right now, and we expect to have the job done by the end of the week. (I have three people who are trusted to go through my merchant accounts and I have all three working on getting this done as we speak.)

      The 11 week program is starting this week. The 12 month program will start the following week. I will have a lot more updates for everyone this week so make sure to stop by and read any new posts.

      The Vultures Are Descending Already

    • So, I finally got some needed sleep.. opened my email box this morning to find:

      1) A teleseminar for the internet marketing community about 7 secrets to a million dollar business being used to pitch some sort of program
      2) A pitch for a 6 week teleseminar series on how to get the maximum leverage out of your internet business.

      Then I opened an email from a friend and he had found two other promotions geared for the budding internet entrepreneur.

      Unbelievable. I guess I should take it all as a compliment, but I don’t. I have spent years perfecting what I now teach, and it all has been proven time and time again. These Johnny-Come-Latelys are just opportunists trying to feed on my table scraps - and they’ll end up hurting the people who put trust in them.

      So, if you are one of the people who couldn’t afford what I have offered, please do not go looking for some cheap option. Instead go through my free materials, study them, do your best to apply them and I will have more free materials for you. Yes, I will be busy but I would rather do some extra work and get you what you need, even if I give it away, then be at all responsible for you going down the wrong path with the wrong people.

      I know what I’ve said here is controversial, but for 2 years I was the only one working on strategy and systems for internet businesses and within 4 hours of my launch ending all of sudden there are quite a few popping up, it really make me sick, and it should make you sick too.

      If you read my work, you already know how important a role I feel your business plays is in your life. That’s why I get so worked up about this. The wrong advice could literally set you years back. Be careful, before you take anyone’s business building advice, see if they have testimonials from people your respect and whose success you would like to emulate. Make them prove to you that they’ve been focused on internet businesses - and that they’ve had more than 10 internet businesses as clients.

      OK, I am finished with my rant. Now on to some housekeeping.

      TGIF - Wow, I Am Really Happy It’s Friday

    • Was that a crazy ride or what?

      It’s 12:30am, twelve and a half hours since we closed admission to my coaching program. I am still receiving requests to get in (we’ve been getting them all day) and the answer unfortunately is no. It’s not that we don’t have the room, but my staff and I have our hands full right now, and I would rather spend my time focusing on my clients. Also, I learned a long time ago that your word is very important - and I intend to keep mine. A deadline is a deadline.

      To all my new clients - You will be hearing from me very shortly, and I am very excited to get started, I believe that you will see more of this group go on to bigger and better ventures then any other group I have worked with.

      To all of you who couldn’t take part, I plan on releasing more free content for you, and in the very near future I will be sending out a link to a survey asking what it is you would like from me and what you would be willing to pay for it. If I get some good ideas that don’t diminish the value of what I am providing my clients and doesn’t require an inordinate amount of my time then I will certainly entertain it.

      I had a meeting today with the group over at Agora, and I’ve got some awesome stuff planned that I am sure you are all going to flip out over. It’s not a 100% certain yet, but I might be doing a series of calls with some of the business people I respect and
      have learned the most from. If it ends up happening… you’ll be the first to know.

      I need to get back to work right now - but I wanted to say thank you to everyone, it’s a humbling experience to see so many people moved by my work. I certainly want to give more too, and I will. But first I must attend to all my new clients and bring them into the fold.

      Keep posting here too - I read every comment, some I respond to by email, some I chose to ignore, and some bring a smile to my face and let me know that all my hard work is worth it.

      Guess what?

      I am almost done with the next pdf I’ll be sending out, along with an announcement that I am sure will shock quite a few of you. I’ve come up with a title, it’s called “The Manifesto’s Missing Chapter”. The reason? Well, after reviewing all the obstacles that so many people were generous enough to share, I realized that most of them were stemming from a single source. Yep, that’s right - there’s a single big mistake lots of people are making early on in their business that’s basically predetermining their marginal results.

      Scary thought, isn’t it?

      What’s worse is I completely passed over it in the Manifesto because I simply thought it was common sense. Wow! was I wrong. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

      So here’s the deal. Keep your eyes peeled for both The Manifesto’s Missing Chapter and My announcement on Wednesday. And make sure to have a wonderful July 4th celebration - I’ll be going to a party on the other side of Florida (Naples) with my wife Debi and our 2 daughter Ava & Elle.

      It’s going to be great to get away for the day - the firestorm that the Manifesto ignited is still raging. The opt-ins are still pouring in, and more and more people are blogging about it, talking about it, and analyzing it.
