Make Up Your Mind Already

Have you ever met an idiot that is more successful than you are?

We all have, right?

Frequently, when I am coaching, a client will say something along the lines of "I’m just as smart as (blank "guru"), so why am I working so much harder yet making so much less than them?

When they ask, I’m never quite sure… Do they really want the truth, or are they simply venting their frustrations? To play it safe, I usually say nothing and wait to hear what comes out next. After a silent pause, the client speaks…

The next few words out of their mouth tell me everything I need to know. If they are serious they’ll press me and ask again. If not they’ll simply move on to the next topic.

You see, I need to know if they are serious, because if they’re not… they aren’t ready to hear the cold, hard truth.

What about you? Do you want to know why people with half your smarts are making ten times more than you? If so, keep reading…

Today, the internet provides an overwhelming amount of information. Never before have so many people been so well informed… And yet, so utterly confused.

Lots of entrepreneurs go around thinking that "Access to information is what separates the winners from the losers" and, "The smartest person in the room should be the most successful". Not true. If it were, then whoever bought the most products, or read the most books would be richest, and we both know how outrageous that is.

That’s not to say that getting the right information isn’t important, but it’s only a tool.

When it comes to being successful in business, there are a few easily overlooked elements that are absolutely vital. They’re truly the deciding factors.

So, what are the crucial "winning" elements at the core of all successful entrepreneurs (even the "idiots")?

1.) Action Orientation. Taking action is the real difference between the super-successful and the wannabes. Wannabes simply absorb information and at their very best, react to it. And with such an overwhelming supply of information, most of them are simply numbed by it.

Contrast that with the successful entrepreneurs out there. When they get good information… they act on it – as soon as they possibly can. The main reason why so many don’t take action is because they are paralyzed by the prospect of failure. Add to that, their mistaken belief that the next information nugget they come across will be the difference between success and failure, and it becomes obvious why their "waiting" has them stuck.

If they press on, they only become more confused by conflicting facts. All the while, becoming increasingly frustrated that they still haven’t found the magic they’ve been seeking.

If you’ve ever been there, here’s my advice – Stay focused! Take a deep breath, and ask yourself, -What do I have to get done today?- Not tomorrow, or next week, or even next month. Today! And not what do I have to learn, but what do I have to DO to further my success?!?! It’s easy to lose your focus on today when you are thinking about tomorrow. And it’s just as tempting to believe that the next pearl of wisdom you come across is going to make all the difference. But it won’t. You’ll never reach the level of success you crave without taking specific DAILY steps that take you there.

It’s pretty straightforward. To build a successful business you have to train your brain to crystallize a future vision, break it into small details, and organize them into daily tasks. After that, all you need is the courage to commit to the completion of these daily tasks – despite all the obstacles that get in your way.

Sounds easy enough, right? So what will sabotage your success? Mainly fear! Fear is your enemy. The little voice whispering – what if it doesn’t work? What if I’m wrong? Look, some self-doubt is natural – but when it prevents you from achieving the success you deserve it’s a problem. Which leads to our next point:

2.) Rise Above Your Fears & Doubts. You have to get far enough above your doubts to keep working or you’re doomed. What works for me is to forget it all. And the easiest way to do that, is to get lost in a project. It works for me and it’ll work for you. Just throw yourself so deep into your work that your fears stay far enough away until you’ve finished all that’s needed to be done. Every successful business owner learns how to do this, sooner or later. What makes it easier is knowing…

Experience will always be your best teacher

When it comes to business you are going to make mistakes. We all do. Even the Intels, Microsofts, and Googles of the world mis-step from time to time. Building a successful company is complex, and there are always factors that lie beyond your control.

The trick is to learn from your mistakes. Just do your best to limit your risk, focus every day, keep trying, learn what works, and don’t torture yourself when you take a wrong turn. Just notice it, learn from it, and change your approach.

And since we are talking about mistakes… Do you know what’s at the root of most mistakes that you’ll make? I see it over and over again, playing out in so many online businesses. Yet, most people would never guess what it is, in a million years. Even though practically everyone who struggles in business is guilty of it.

For some strange reason, everyone wants to make things more complicated than they need to be. It’s as if everyone is fascinated by the overly complex, so instead of keeping things simple, they burden themselves with too much to do and too little time to do any of it right. Which leads to the next crucial element…

3.) Keep Things As Simple As You Can To Avoid The "Stupidity Tax". This a big one. It’s so easily avoidable but for some reason it’s one almost everyone online seems to walk right into.

Heres an example how this flawed approach plays out…

Instead of picking one way to drive traffic to your website, mastering it, and then moving on – most people do the opposite. They want to learn about launches, pay-per-click, search engine optimization, affiliate marketing, and every other method under the sun, all at the same time without developing any level of mastery in any of the tactics whatsoever.

Yet, the most successful online businesses I know do the opposite. Agora for example focused primarily on pay-per-click for their first 50 million in online sales. My company focused on jv/affiliate launches and in 9 months we’ve done over 7 million in sales.

When you pursue multiple directions in your business all at the same time you end up making very little progress. And it doesn’t matter if you are smarter and working harder than other successful people because you are spread way too thin.

On the internet, making this mistake can really kill your business, here’s why: In the online marketing world your results are directly related to how your skills stack up against your competitors. In Google adwords if your competition is better they’ll pay less for traffic and convert more of it than you will. In search engine optimization they’ll rank higher than you. In the affiliate world whoever converts better, sells more, and therefore can pay affiliates more, which locks other competitors out of the market.

It doesn’t work this way offline. You don’t pay more if your ad or commercial sucks. You might not get the number of responses but you’re not locked out, and you’re not forced into an inferior position, saddled with paying the "stupidity tax."

The Solution -> Isolate the fewest activities you can be successful with. Then knock them off one at a time. Don’t make the mistake of trying to do too much and marginalizing your results.

Remember: Confucius said "Man who chases two rabbits catches neither".

If you follow my advice you’ll get to take back quite a bit of time you’re currently wasting. You’ll be free from wasting time trying to learn too much about too many tactics at once. Plus you’ll get back the time youvre wasting trying to execute with a superficial level of knowledge. What you do with your newfound free time leads us to our fourth and final success-component, which is…

4.) Know Where The Money Is. It takes time to know your market, but it’s time you must invest if you’re serious about your business’s success.

The first step is quite simply to open your eyes and look at what’s going on around you. You need to keep your finger on the pulse of your market to know what’s "hot" in it. But that’s only 1/2 the equation. The second step is to do your best to understand WHY it’s hot. Until you understand your market on a deeper level you’ll keep scratching your head wondering why you are making less than your "dumb" counterparts.

The good news is that once you get it – When you really understand the psychology of your market; your results will improve immediately in all the marketing you do. From emails to pay-per-click your results will multiply because you’ll know your prospects better than any of your competitors.

So there you have it. If you’ve ever wondered why you make less than others even if you are smarter than they are, now you know. And it’s up to you. Are you going to make up your mind to keep plodding along somewhat frustrated with your progress or are you going to embrace the 4 points I shared with you here and decide once and for all that you are going to do what it takes to be successful.

Only time will tell…

To Higher Profits,
Rich Schefren

persistance is important. so is sticking with a path. lastly, you can be very intelligent but not know about the “interent way of doing business.”

it is new, exciting and different. first you have to learn the ground rules and then jump in.

you are right there is so much info and methods to choose but you gotta pick the one that you understand and then learn it and perfect it.

    Hey Rch,

Your KISS comments (keep it simple stupid) are right on the money as usual; although this is easier said than done with all the ‘Net Gurus barking and keeping you awake all nights.

I don’t think there is any “Big Secret” stored in hundreds of pages of eBooks and videos for doing business online.

Like everything else in life, it’s just a journey – you choose a destination – you choose a vehicle, you pack for the trip and move AHEAD one day at a time.

Thanks again for putting things in perspective.

Really good thoughts. Your comment about action is what most people overlook. I have developed the mantra, Make Today Count. I know that if I move forward toward my goals each and every day, I will eventually achieve them. I also understand that a successful life is simply a collection of successful days. So my goal is to Make Each Day Count.

Taking focused action each and every day will dramatically improved the lives of most.

Hi – I’ve just decided to get serious and make my website/business pay. So, I’ve followed the wisdom of the old path and found the overwhelm challenging. I then started researching the best way to approach turning my business into a BUSINESS without working every minute for not much more than I was getting before!

Finding Rich and reading the Manifeto and The Missing Chapter has been the best use of my non-productive time to date!

I know this isn’t the right place for this testimonial but, pass it on, tell your friends and thanks Rich for giving me what I need to set me on the right road to my profit-filled success.

Hello Through Your Blog Once Again, Rich,

I do admire the Guru you are so much and I recommend your work to everyone.

I love to leave comments for Rich because I believe saying Thank You is that important. The manifestos were awe inspiring and every follow up from Rich
    is radiantly inspiring.

Focus, and Action mixed with a lot of common sense called the Basics. Do one thing well at a time.

In this world we experience a lot of talk and think it is action but that remains to
be evaluated. Perhaps it is and perhaps it isn’t.

Talk is very important to me as an action since Negotiation is the most important part of the service I provide. I’ve been selling real estate since 1985 and 3 years ago opened my own company http://www.EvaNashRealty.com and this focus has opened a journey of adventure for me that is all encompassing now and much of
what Rich Schefren delivers is the most sound advice to Focus on Before and again in action. I’m in awe of the communication he shares with us. I am Grateful too I get so much from it I take days to digest it all.

We all make things much more complicated than we need to I honestly think without realizing that is what we do. The answer is stick to the Basics but we
search continuously for the most complicated possibility and then think now we can reinvent the wheel.

Business for sure needs to showcase your strengths – Rich is Right about that. Do you know your strengths? Start there and be honest with yourself. What is your most important contribution to the business you are in or will begin and build on that strength. Why work on weaknesses when you have strengths. Delegate your lack while Strengthening your Assets.

Rich *Bravo You Inspire me, again and again, Thank You for sharing your wisdom.

I found out that what you are sayng is true, but the hard way: after spending way too much time and money on scams. I’m now focused on website optimization and “tweaking” my marketing tools, only about three at present.

As a relative newcomer to Internet Marketing, I have to voice an opinion. Every new marketing program that comes out offers at least 50 free videos in additon to the “best and the most” and the “secret” and on and on: free downloads, get more more more! How overwhelming. If the “gurus” are really intent on helping others, it would seem that spoon feeding some basics, at lower pricing and then going to the next level would be much more palatable. It seems you could endear your clients with better mentoring and proven results would keep you selling. Thank you for sharing your skills so concisely.

    To Mike,
Sorry to hear about your daughter. Get in touch with “make a wish” The American Cancer Society, Ronald McDonald Charities, St. Judes Hospital, and the Paul Newman camp. I had to laugh when I read this post…

Even though Rich is talking mainly about business, I find that people can really take this to a whole other level… the level of LIFE in general.

I help people in the fitness arena and I’ll say this: the people that only focus on one thing at a time tend to hit their goals.

Those that have 4-5 different goals… work out, stop smoking, eat better, quit drinking, etc never tend to hit any.

Great post! I’m definitely going to reference it today in my next installment.

Can somebody please agree with that the word “guru” to describe a self-made millionaire is WAY overused.

Please Rich, can we please stop using the word “guru.” It’s played out and makes the internet marketing community sound like a little girl chanting for Michael Jackson to play one more…!

    Please no more “guru.”

Thanks for the once again inspiring information. I must admit there are certain elements which I am lacking which has not allowed me to take my venture to the next level.

With your drumming this information and reminding me of what I need to be focusing on I must admit I have now made it a must to adopt this form or mentality in order to succeed.

    Rich, thanks once again.

  • Michael

I agree with what you are saying. I have always belived that your should gather as much information as you can, but if that is all that you do, it is just a theoretical pursuit. Business is where preperation and action meet. I know this in my heart, yet it helps me to hear somone like yourself remind me of it.

    Thank you.

    Excellent articles Rich.

I particularly like the point about action. Its action that makes money and you need to choose those actions. Reading another report will not make you money. Acting on it might.

Perfect timing as I was about to go upstairs and read another report. Think I might write a couple of articles instead to drive me traffic.

    Thanks!

Yeah, I loved this post! Thank you.
This is also called leading from your strength. If you’ve got a great forehand then find every way possible to use that forehand and not be forced to use your backhand. Delegate the backhand to someone with a great backhand.

I’ve been staying on target and things are improving for me. Article marketing, and getting broader circulation for my words (publishers, agents, distributors) are all in line with the goal for me – so that’s where I focus. And I’m well on my way to where I want to go. But it does take discipline and strategy for overcoming obstacles. I have a daily routine that really keeps me on point. It also helps me to plan forward weeks and months at a time – with ultimate 1 year, 3 year and 5 year targets.

    Thanks again!

  • http://www.giftbasketbusinessworld.com Flora Morris Brown

Ouch! You are right on target. My problem is staying focused on one strategy and giving it time to succeed before jumping to another one. When I hear about a new gadget or technique I’m like a kid in a candy store, ready to gobble up every shiny thing that promises to make me rich and satisfied.

Thanks for holding that mirror up to my face. I’m reforming my ways.

  • http://www.topshelfarticles.com Brian Ankner

Once again Rich you set me back into the drivers seat! It seems that while we try to stay focused on a single strategy all these other “better” ways pop up just to confuse us. Then along comes Rich, slaps us as you would a hysterical person and says “I’ve already told you once, don’t make me tell you again”!

On target as usual, exactly what I would expect from the master of strategy. Hey, maybe you could call your website strategic…..something or other. That way we would remember these solid lessons you give just by looking at the website address. Just an idea, take it or leave it!

    Brilliant!!! Lets have another Guiness!

    Hi Rich,

I used to think it was great to be a student of success and in particular a student of internet makrketing because I believed that was where my future lay. Of course I made the misunderstood the “to earn more you have to learn more” mantra of the personal development gurus I subscribed to and missed out the most important ingredient – action. I have only realised it recently but I now understand that fear (of making mistakes) was holding me back and I mistook reading and learning as action.

I recently plunged and took action on an idea. I learnt a lot, made plenty of mistakes and didn’t make any money from it but the learning I got from DOING it was far more than I could ever have achieved by weeks of THINKING about it.

In my own living room, I now walk a little taller because I DID something. I feel much better about myself, my identity as a successful entrepreneur has taken a postive step forward and I now can’t wait to get the next DO out there and see what happens.

Probably the most important piece of advice you have just given is to focus. I do have a vision of my future vision, I am breaking it down and I will concentrate my activities UNTIL it is done.

Thank you for sharing and please don’t stop. There are many of us out here not on your program (yet :-)) for who these nuggets you throw out are lifelines that keep us going until we find our own feet and start holding them to the fire.

    Regards

Good post Rich. The part about keeping things simple really resonates for me as I am getting ready to graduate and start my own internet marketing consultancy. I’ve been trying to figure out how many things I should do (and learn) myself and how to allocate the others among staff/contractors/partners. Reading your post amplified the voice whispering that I should pull together a network of highly specialized individuals and focus on choosing which specialized approaches are appropriate for which clients and assembling the pieces together, rather than trying to implement most of it myself.

    Good timing, good point. Cheers!

    Hello Rich,

I have read your suggestions and I want to tell you that I am usually a very focused person. I have all things to be done for the day noted and executed right away, no doubt about it. I am currently using one way of online sales:PPC. However, I believe I lack online marketing knowledge. I believe this is what’s holding me back. This is my first e-commerce experience and I am considering myself a perfect case study to your course. I will be learning and applying every tiny little thing you teach me to my e-business and I am very eager to see how effective and successful your course is applied to a fresh non-experienced start-up phase person like I am.

  • http://www.dsl-edgework.com David Scott Lynn

    Dear Rich,

Please call everyone you know who teaches copy-writing and tell them to STOP teaching! All these people writing Compelling Copy keep this fantasy alive: The Next Big Thing That Will SAVE You! (me), and get you (me) onto that beach with wi-fi.

Seriously, as usual, you diagnose the problem precisely, the good news for me being that I am not the only one succumbing to it all. My #3 mentor in life, in his seminars, teaches there is an upper and lower Spec Limit on information: Too Little info, you reinvent the wheel and you lose; Too Much info, you get overwhelmed/bogged down and you lose. Finding the Info Balance, and which info is relevant to your (my) specific needs, is critical.

But everyone is so good at convincing the inexperienced, like me, that THEIR piece of Info is the most important one, but you are right. At this point in the game, I must grow up and be an adult, and get the relevant experience myself, then I can filter out what’s really relevant with knowledge, rather than hoping and guessing.

I keep thinking there should be, and searching for, a fomula somewhere out there that helps make such decisions or evaluations as to which info to pay attention to; but I am starting to think there is none. That, as you say, only comes with my own experience in my own projects. No one else can write the formula for me. And that is what makes an entrepeneur, the one who can, among other things, figure that issue out, make theri very own formula, and, even harder, follow it.

Thank you very much for helping pull back the curtain on so many things in so many ways, as you do so well. I’m watching your Agora info-marketing presentation on CD Rom, and though the info is much the same, you are certainly one of those teachers whose depth becomes increasingly more obvious as the student pays more attention, applies the info, and learns.

    Take Care,
    David Scott Lynn

    Rich,
I am a retired police chief, curently a law enforcement consultant for a US Gove. agncy. I am sent around the world to 3rd world countries spreading the word of democratic policing and the protection of human rights. Some would say honorable profession. I would agree but I have no life and I miss my family. A few years back I recognized the opportunity and growth potential of the internet and on line businesses. I began to investigate and was exposed to scam after scam. B/S Guru’s that all claimed to have the secrets to success. The secrets to success? All they want is the money and they use all the tricks of the trade to rape unsuspecting persons that believe there is a magical secrete, add to that some greed, and touch it off with the sucker born every minute concept and you have the majority of the population out there. I read your comments in this news letter and a few others that you have written. My friend you not only described me, you hit a chord within me that rang true. I am a little old fashion and still believe in the traditional mentoring concept. Find someone that is a master at what they do, honest, straight forward, and duplicate. Then grow from there after you have mastered the basic principals. Then give back and/or share with others because it will all come back to you ten fold. Every thing you have described is right on the money Rich. Most people loose focus and become over whelmed by the bombardment of information. You don’t know where to start. You are right on regarding the KISS principal. Keep it simple stupid. Thanks for getting me back on track Rich. Your words are not just applicable to internet business but to all business ventures. I have degrees, thousands of hours of training, a teachers credential, as well as coaching, mentoring, team building and motivational speaking experience….but, for all the education and experience….I lost focus too!
Yep……you described me like you have been looking over my shoulder for the last year or so. If was a please reading your no nonsense material that provided direction. Bottom line……it our choice which direction we want to take. Thanks Rich

    On the button again, Rich.

Lack of focus for me stems from a desperate attempt to succeed in my online business. As time progresses and that elusive success cloud floats further away I am driven towards even greater acts of foolish desperation.

Hence the next well written sales letter appears to hold more promise than it actually does. Heightened no doubt by my own strong desire for making it happen.

Thanks for reminding me again about the basics.

    Rich,

    Thanks for a great article.

I took your survey, but will be out of town on business on the 16th. Will you offer a “make up class” for those of who can make the official one?

    Thanks!

    Hi Rich,

Thank you so much for all the information and knowledge you’ve given us. We learned from you a lot. I hope we can focus to succeed.

    Thanks again.

The best advice I’ve read in years. Countless times I’ve said…I’m smarter, I work longer hour…what’s the problem?

Spreading yourself too thin and not truly applying the total focus on one project at a time results in poor results. Trust me on this one…as I’ve been doing it for years. Today, this very moment, I’m going to make a 30 day conscious effort to change.
Insteads of the 7 or 8 sites, I’m taking it one site, one step at a time. I’m looking forward to the results.

Rich, what a great post. I “stumbledupon” your site this afternoon and this article was a breath of fresh air. The key is the ACTION ORIENTATION. Movement is key. Do something! The second thing I always notice about super successful people is that they have an uncommon ability to focus and stay concentrated on a task for a longer period than other people.

Best regards, I will visit again.
