      Are You Having Any Fun?

      Published in Blog, Effectiveness

    • Today I’m going to share with you one of the secrets to boosting your productivity and how to inject a lot more fun into your life.

It’s an important and transformational concept that’s simple to execute and you’ll get the benefits immediately. Actually, I’ve been eager to share it with you for quite some time, so I am really excited to get you started right now.

I’ve been so busy these past few weeks. Crazy schedules with the Acceleration2 seminar in Delray Beach, Fla., and a whirlwind of other business events have really tapped my resources of late, but the old energy is starting to come back. I’m feeling invigorated again, and not a moment too soon …

The past two months have been an amazing growth period in my professional life, and I hope in yours as well. In fact, this one technique I am going to share with you is one of the reasons for my company’s phenomenal growth. I’m really excited about the prospects of our future conversations about business, life, and how they meet at the intersection of success and opportunity.

I want to follow-up on my promise to you in a May 16 blog post. In that post I invited you and my other readers to share 20 fun things you like to do. I then promised you I would show you how to use this list to dramatically boost your productivity and be a lot more successful, a lot sooner.

I was amazed at the number of readers that responded. To date, 206 readers shared with the rest of us the fun activities they enjoy in their lives.

I had my staff turn all these wonderful responses into a pdf that you can download right here:

Now I’ll tell you the concept , why it’s so powerful, the exact steps you need to take and the results you can expect from this amazing productivity tip.

A core problem for a majority of entrepreneurs is that we fail to schedule fun into our day. We do this because we think we will get more done, but in reality this has the opposite effect. We end up becoming less effective, procrastinate more, become less focused, more burnt-out, irritable and stressed.

Most entrepreneurs valiantly squeeze all of the fun out of their day in order to schedule more time at work, as if hours in front of a computer somehow magically translate into additional income. But too much work and too little play has that all too common side effect of “work” time being wasted because we are simply not productive or can’t get started on the big projects.

I touched on this in the Internet Business Manifesto, and it’s worth a reminder here. If you are productive just four hours out of every day, as many entrepreneurs are, why insist on working 10 hours a day in spite of yourself? There are certainly better ways to improve our production, but adding more and more hours of procrastination, frustration, confusion and overwork just doesn’t seem the wise way to go.

You see, when you are staring at some big project that must get done, a part of you is thinking about how long it will take, and all the fun things you aren’t going to be able to do. When you start thinking this way it’s only natural to either procrastinate and postpone, or give a half-hearted effort.

      So here’s the prescription:

I want you to go through the pdf we compiled for you - and pick out 21 activities that you would have fun doing and that you are capable of doing without too much additional effort. Then I want you to schedule one activity per day right on your calendar in the middle of your day. The only condition is, it must be something you really look forward to doing.

Once again, you can download that comprehensive list right here.

I can hear you screaming, "But when am I going to get all my work done?"

      Here’s the counter-intuitive reality you’ll experience:

You’ll be much more inclined to work before you experience your fun activity (like gleefully completing all of your nagging tasks before leaving on vacation) and you’ll be much more productive and efficient while doing the work.

Why? Because you now have your fun activity breathing down your back forcing you to get as much done before you HAVE TO go enjoy yourself.

It’s time for you to commit to adding fun activities each day into your life, for the betterment of yourself, your business, your family and your community. Stated more simply, have fun each day and you’ll be more successful.

If you aren’t already enjoying each and every day, you are missing out on something tremendous. If you’re ready to make more and enjoy your life to the fullest, here’s all you have to do:

Step 1 – Review the pdf and highlight, underline or check the activities that you believe you would enjoy, that you can do without too much coordination with others, and can be completed from start to finish in less than two hours (you must come up with at least 21 of them).

Step 2 – Keep that list handy and break out your calendar, your to-do list, or whatever you use to schedule your day. Be proactive, start scheduling fun activities right now. Go ahead, really reward yourself. Do it for the next 21 days, I promise it will be worth it.

Step 3 – Whatever you do, don’t break the pattern. Make sure you do this each and every day. You’ll find yourself looking forward to new and fun events as you come up with more and more of them. By making them a central part of your day, and by including others, you’ll get the real benefit of refocusing your attention on what matters, and away from what manages to drive you nuts and suck the life out of your business.

Remember: Fun is an infinitely refreshing resource and the more we dip into it, the better we’ll all be.

It is imperative to “schedule” some spontaneous play into your day. Be a child again. Make play a part of every day and learn to smile again. An added benefit will be the great ideas that come to you when you are out there having fun. (Haven’t you ever noticed that your best ideas come when you are away from your computer, work or office?)

Apply this seemingly simple principle – adding fun to every day – and you’ll find, in short order, that you will be more productive. You’ll feel more refreshed, less frustrated and increasingly eager to get your work done so you can race to the next fun item on your calendar. It’s a built-in reward system – the “workday candy” that we offer ourselves – that keeps us focused and going strong.

      Get the list here…

Don’t you want to have more fun?

Just to be clear, the key to the “21 things you enjoy” exercise is not to shirk work or otherwise diminish your self-worth and work responsibilities. Quite the contrary. Scheduling more guilt-free play in your life can attack the underlying causes of procrastination, lack of focus and marginalized results. It’ll make you a much more productive, lively and enjoyable person. I promise!

It’s time to change the way we speak to ourselves about our work. It’s time for a total attitude change when it comes to looking through our own prism of productivity.

The importance of play must be emphasized in business, particularly in an age that sucks us in through incessant information overload. You’ve heard me rail about this many times before.

There has to be a separation in life that provides a necessary “breather” in our busy schedules. Looking forward to fun activities allows us the oxygen to move forward with confidence and our full focus.

Should we throw away our career responsibilities, ignore pressing deadlines and avoid the hard work that needs to get done? Of course not. However, recognizing that we are more likely to work productively when we can anticipate pleasure and success can prove to be a tremendous advantage for our personal health and the health of our respective businesses as well.

Let me know what you think and what exciting ideas and inspirations have come from your newly scheduled fun time. Keep me and the rest of my readers updated on your success with this unconventional, yet highly rewarding strategy.

      Now, go have some fun!

      To Higher Profits,
      Rich Schefren

P.S. I’ll have a lot more in store for you over the next few weeks, including the final installment of my Attention Age Doctrine.

If you are new to this blog or if you would just like to join in the fun – literally – check out the list of enjoyable things to do and add your own recommendations. Make sure fun is an important part of your day. Then post a comment to let me know how you made out.

Is the second part doctrine coming soon? Lord knows I could use some help.

I notice that things sort of work themselves out when I’m swimming. I’ve booked swim dates with myself for the next 2 weeks.

      Thanks for the kick Rich!

      Hi Rich,

Great content, ideas, and psychological tricks we can play to ourselves. Thank you. One let down though. Can you turn off the YELL OW highlight or place a very soft “yellow less” for the sake of our eyes please?

If you are testing here something out of the “Gurus” techniques to see the results I’d understand but still please do it to your own “think tank” group first. Thank you!

P.S. I wonder how many are bothered by the “YELLOW”. If it’s only me than I’ll take that back.

      Cheers!

“(Haven’t you ever noticed that your best ideas come when you are away from your computer, work or office?)”

Agree with you, Rich. Sometimes great ideas come when I’m not in working, which is absolutely in front of computer connected to the internet. Thus it’s better to get away for sometimes, enjoy life out there and collect the new ideas.

Thanks and eager to read your next post, Rich.

      Hello Rich,

Thank you for sharing this information with us. This is not new to me although it is a great reminder. I do this to a slight degree already but not nearly enough. I schedule a time, usually around noon to go see a great movie. I can say that it’s always invigorating.

What you share in this post is absolute wisdom that most unfortunately will miss. It’s not that it’s new information because I’ve heard this many times and I will prove to you that I have before the end of this post. The problem is that it’s not practiced and the reason that it’s not practiced is that it’s impact is not fully understood.

One thing that I am notorious for is not taking someone’s word or advice at face value. I immediately put it into action. Now “what if” (and I know that they won’t) everybody did what you described today. They didn’t wait until sometime later in the week but they implemented it today. The would have immediate feedback and it would be undeniable.

Here’s what is mostly likely to happen. Many will read through the PDF and get all excited about what they read. They will have good intentions. They will get these fuzzy feelings. They will amen to themselves. They will “high-five” all of the room…..and then they will do NOTHING! Life will happen and they will forget and return to old habits. Ask me how I know this?

Rich I am sure you’ve heard of the Big Rocks Theory. Whether you have or you have not the Big Rocks to me are parallel to scheduling fun things to do in our lives. The Big Rocks Theory says that if you don’t put the Big Rocks in first then there will never be time for anything else.

Well what are the Big Rocks/21 Fun Things?
The Answer….You get to decide. However, I bet no one, when they are really honest with themselves will choose more hours of work.

For most of us the Big Rocks/21 Fun Things will most likely fall under these categories.

Your children; Your loved ones; Your education; Your dreams; A worthy cause; Teaching or mentoring others; Doing things that you love; Time for yourself; Your health; Your significant other?

The Big Rocks/21 Fun Things theory also says that if you don’t put the Big Rocks/21 Fun Things in first there will NEVER be enough room for everything else.

Allow me to get a bit Spiritual here. I think this is a gift from God/Universe/Higher Power. The gift says if you will do the things that are most important then I will give all of it to you…
Money, Love, Power, Fun, Joy, etc

however if you do the things that are least important…you will never have it all and you will experience…
      Regret, Frustration, Anger, Burnout, etc.

The choice is yours which path you choose to go down.

Rich the reason you have to keep making these types of posts is because very few are Being this way although they say that they know.

If you know and don’t do then you may as well not know.

      Rickey

Wow, a really excellent post! Thanks so much for the wake-up call, and the kick in the pants. Man, I’m the worst about working 12-16 hours per day, sitting in front of my laptop, being “productive”.

      Thanks so much, Rich.

Call me nuts, but I’m not going to rush to and from the bathroom during the day!

I’ll also bike, fish, and do non-critical reading more often — during the day.

      Rich,

Thanks so much, I learned this lesson last summer after spending 5 days in the hospital after having a nervous breakdown, I could have died. Workaholism is serious and is real. I wish I could afford your seminars but I am applying some of the strategies in your Internet Manifesto to my business, it was an eye opener to say the least. 2 years ago I would have said “Work” on that list, today I say: surf, bike, kayak, run. gym, sex… on and on you get the picture, sort of a spiritual awakening… it’s time to stop and smell the flowers, death will arive all too soon.

What struck me as I read through the list…many of the men said sex, few women did.
Lots of people put disclaimers on their list with some version of “I can’t afford it”
Others listed things they’d like to have…not do. Solid psych research says, having doesn’t bring happiness for more than a moment…doing does.
Lots of others drop out into their computers for hours at a time…computers won’t get you sex, often won’t automatically drop money into your life…and so much time pass-timing means you aren’t either having or doing…

hm-m-m-m-m there is a lesson in just reading other people’s lists..I’m off…time to go hug my love…women do like sex too…

You are so right I have found many entrepreneurs don’t make time for fun and I think it is equally important that you enjoy the business you run, that way you can have fun while working get your cake and eat it.

      Hi Rich,
I deeply enjoyed your idea as I am nearing retirement. I did a list but after 44 things I have fun doing, I came to the conclusion that it is no wonder I am not successful at internet marketing.
I am just having too much fun each day to focus on work. lol . I will have to try to get a balance happening here. Thanks for pointing out the necessity for change in this area for all of us. Good job!!!

      Hi Rich,

WO(W, I just finished reading Your Fun pdf. Yes, I agree with You and Your Team. I always take time out for Fun or Just to go visit someone everyday. Due to illnesses, I can not do alot of the things You suggest, but I still find time for Fun. Well, I do have all the time in the world to have Fun, cause I sure am NOT making money on-line. I spent my on-line time reading ebooks and training to build a Site. Wee, Thank You for giving me this cool PDF and I wish all of You Great Success!

      Hi Rich
Is amazing how people treat their lives. It seems they don’t know what or how to do things to be wealthy, people are searching for dreams in the majority of time impossible to realize without great efforts, commitment and concentration. Most of the time people search for easy things like “golden pills” “quick rich schemes”
and so. I have been searching business opportunities on internet for 8 months till now, and yet didn’t find something really serious, something that put you in the righ path, ideas exist a lot of them. I must put my own effort on everithing if I want to achieve my goals, nobody whant to help nobody without some kind of interest - money, advantage, earnings, and so - are inherent on the process of giving and receiving things whatever it be.
But I want to congrat you by your efforts on helping people discover their aptitudes and incentivise to them to put something work on their behalf.
Hope you be successful on your endeavour.
      Regards
      Zaqueu

Darn it Rich! Don’t you know us workaholics don’t like having this “fun stuff” thrown in our faces!! Jeeze..

Just kidding… This is such good advice and for those of us that are self-enforced, isolated, workaholics… it’s a good reminder too. Something tells me that you have similar tendencies. Anyway, good job on the post.

Imagine how wonderful the world would be if everyone put this list into practice…. Maybe they would rediscover their passion for living and after all, aren’t we all working “so hard” with the unrealistic goal that we’ll have “more time” for fun - LATER!!

One of the most toxic words we learn is “Someday”. Someday I’ll have enough…. whatever - fill in the blank …. someday I’ll …. well how about this..

Stop! Take a deep breath… and let your spiritual being loose in that physical body of yours. Free your spirit to sooth your soul… NOW GET UP AND WALK AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER!!

      Blessings,
      Barbara

You know i totally agrre with you!

Today is all we have so might as well have some fun, each and every day

My mantra is “Life is too short”. I work in health services so I see how short life can be on a day to day basis.

As a result of this, I make sure that I do something each day that absolutely delights me and is solely for me.

I know it sounds self indulgent, but it is so therapeutic and having fun does not have to involve money

In my case, I just try to take pleasure in the ‘little’ things in life, like a walk in the fields behind my house, watching the horses

Thank you for this great post

      Hello Rich,
Thanks for a badly needed dose of reality. I couldn’t even think of 5 things for a list.
As I sit here in tears writing this response, I am desparately searching my heart for something that will give me complete pleasure today. I will do something even if it’s wrong (used to say that in the Navy before going on liberty).
Sad as this may sound I am actually a pretty up-beat kind of guy; well respected and liked by family, friends, emplyoyers, and co-workers. Lucky they don’t know me like I know me…
I printed out the first 10 pages of lists. God bless your “posters”. They probably had no idea that their sharing may change a persons life today. I will get some ideas from them and implement them in my life .
“More news at eleven” as they say
With Respect and Gratitude to all who touched my life today,
      Randy

      Hello again Rich

…and THANKS - something has been nagging me deep inside the last few weeks and this wonderful work confirms just what I thought… get away from the computer and enjoy something else, something more….

On my first quick glance at this list I noticed the word God came up quite often. I then also noticed the word sex quite often too. Then I did a quick “find” for God and then for sex. Can everyone guess which word appeared more often.

      Best Regards,
      Ben

This is the exact same concept in Dr Ian Fiores book, The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play. Have you read this book Rich? It’s based very much on the principle of scheduling in “fun” breaks in order to get over one’s “procrastinationg ways. A must read if you’re into this concept

      Hi Rich

What a tremendous resource of fun activities - from the … to the sublime. Some people go into great detail while others just flip off 1 or 2 words. To me having fun means getting some great ideas running through my brain. Things I can do to increase where Im heading - challenge-wise and career wise - especially in relation to the internet. Doing that means I tend to have to be very relaxed, out in the fresh air and getting a little exercise as I move through some pretty landscapes - quite simply golf does that for me. Also walking by the Swan River in Perth or cycling through leafy glades. Not exactly a very complicated scenario is it ? Simplicity makes it for me. With the computer and internet I also try to just work simply.
My website is selectgolfing.com - I just started it up and would like you all to have a look - and perhaps a little fun will come your way too!

      Hi again

You know this ‘fun’ thing could really take off. Its got so many people wondering about working smart not long as well as other things. If your labouring in your work - then take a break, even one without much fun - doesn’t it make a bit of difference. ?
On the internet we tend to work alone, think alone, eat alone - and much of it in silence; so the fun stuff might be to do something completely opposite. Try working out a few ideas in a popular cafe, or talking to your elderly relatives about your ideas. Thats another issue I have - don’t leave your elderly relatives alone - give them some fun - they can enjoy a meal out at a community centre or a drive on Sunday. Fun needs to be given - not just taken for ourselves. Old people need more than just a visit on christmas day.

Rich, Thank you for your advice. There is much more to what you have said than we can see it on the surface. Your advice helped me find the missing piece in a puzzle I have been trying to solve over the past few days.

      Thanks a lot

      Good stuff Rich!

It’s easy to get caught up taking care of all the aspects of business each day and think that being productive is just about doing work stuff all the time. It’s also important to take at least one full day off each week to stay fresh and get the most out of the other six days…

Hi Rich…. I love the idea and would love to try it… Any idea though on how to enjoy this without feeling guilty…. I even feel guilty if I’m at home sick! The fact that I’m not financially sound yet may help that guilt emerge… Any insights on how to get rid of it or on how to become financially sound:-p?

      Thanks,
      Marvin

      Hello
Beautiful article about having fun… so true. The above web address is a program I am promoting that I feel has a lot of merit. Any help to help me promote it and get visibility for it would be greatly appreciated! Please get back to me if you need to. Once again keep up the good work and have a Great Day!

      Hi,

You are absolutely right! Whenever I take some time off, I feel re-charged are all ready to go again.

Other than distressing, fun breaks are also great in many ways. Pulling ourselves away from our chores – even for a little while – clears the mind of some of the clutter. Often, unsolvable problems seem simpler when we look at it again after the break. Ideas and solutions dropped in out of nowhere while we shift our focus to something else.

Vacations of a week or 2 are also great for revitalizing our body & mind.

      Thanks for your article.

      Cheers.

      Rich,
Good to see someone spreading the news. I work in an off-line business and lead a group of eight people located across the country - from Boston, Atlanta, to Denver. Most work out of their homes, travel extensively for business, and are vulnerable to becoming isolated. They are passionate in what they do and have a tendency to work too many hours glued to their laptops and treo’s.
I’ve always been a huge believer in having some fun, and even more so, a believer in leading a balanced life. Investing in work, play, family, community, neighbors, volunteering, is ultimately an investment in yourself. You’ll get back three-fold on what you give. It doesn’t get any better than that.
I speak to the eight group members regularly throughout the week, and the one question I always ask……What did you do for fun today? After a few times without an answer, they got the picture. I guess they got tired of hearing the sermon below and decided it was easier and alot more fun! to go out there and do something they enjoyed each day.
See, having a little fun, keeping things balanced on a daily basis will actually make you more productive each day and keep your perspective and energy level in the positive mode. Instead of saying to yourself ” Okay, I’m going to work fourteen hour days for the next three weeks,,,,and then…I’ll do something fun.” Quite frankly, as precarious as this life can be, you better make time for a liitle of everything each day.
Because when you take that final walk, you don’t want to be thinking…..I should have had more fun, I should have spent more time with my spouse, I should have played with my kids more, I should have danced and sung more, I should have helped people more, I should have lived life more.
We all want our business and work lives to be successful. Keeping our daily lives in balance will add to that goal, not take away from it. Today, I took both my dogs for a long walk, or maybe they took me, either way all three of us felt great when we got home.
Okay, your turn….what did you do for fun today?

This is a great reminder Rich to keep me focused on why I’m really in business for myself. It’s not just about the money, it’s to experience freedom and fun and connections everyday. I had let go of hobbies that I enjoy and become all about work. You’ve inspired me to make my list of fun activities and schedule in one every day. Thanks for giving me permission to play!

Downtime or away from the computer time has been critical to my success for the past 15 years (my best productive biz ideas come when I’m running or on an aerobic machine). I also take breaks for music, bike riding, sailing, cooking, etc. Nevertheless, I’ll read what others have listed (although it takes me away from your most important tip (for me) which was:

“Make your office a rehab, no information is allowed to come in whatsoever for the next week. The only information you can have is the information you create. Stop studying, stop analyzing and start creating. Develop urgency in everything you do for the next week and you’ll be blown away at your level of output.”

That bit of advice ALONE has done more for my biz than anything else I’ve ever read or heard. (of course I violated that rule by reading your post BUT I will always read your posts–it’s the other pile of inputs that are on indefinite hold!

      Peace and love,

      Mike Corso

      Dear Rich,
Thank you so much. I had almost cancelled a 5 year reunion to my pony club in
the town I was born in. Thank God I went. It was so much fun seeing all the old faces and riding a nice horse and going in a horse drawn cart in the parade. I need a horse again! Meantime I get on my mini trampoline frequently during the day. I try to take a break from study every hour and do some other work. But I can’t do much of what I love in winter. I also love to sew, sketch, and do carpentry jobs. I have nearly finished a glass house for plant drying for next season’s apricots and tomatos etc. I like renovating anything, but this last year has been stuck in front of a computer and I am paying for it, so will definitely restore the balance. Maybe I will even get a better bank balance! Thanks once again for an invaluable pointer Rich.
      Pixie.

Thank you for keeping these ideas out there for people to find and remind them to really look at what life is about! After my dad died a few years ago I started to see the world differently. I really started to miss him, but miss other things like hobbies I once had, people I used to hang out with, etc. I am sure there are a lot of people below ground that would love the chance to trade places with any of us above ground for a day, an hour, etc. When I think of that, I wonder why am I wasting so much time needlessly on stupid stuff. I started displaying my art publicly this year and noticed how great it felt to DO instead of TALK. I wish others the same courage to do it. The first step is the hardest, after that it all seems to get it’s own momentum.

      hey Rich,
greetings from sunny Thailand where fun is a prerequisite for life.

Despite the above comment I can now see that I am at my most inspired and creative when I do my morning ritual of watching the elephants going to work from the roof terrace. ( it’s a crappy job but someone has to do it ).

I have now also started to build in breaks to meet with friends and have coffee around midday. My clarity and productivity has leapt exponentially just from this.

Great post. thanks a lot Rich.

      sawasdee khap,

      Michael

I wish I were a Genie and could do all I wished with a nod of the head but it seems to take squillions of minutes to get the least of it done and the world is a square computer screen.

Then my German Shepherd tucks his nose under my arm or my cat sits on the keyboard and suddenly the world is large and open and smiles chase the annoyance away. If they don’t then I know I’ve been sitting there too long and have forgotten to have a life.

Fun is many things to different people. My dad likes crosswords and we just found a newsletter (send a blank email to supertriviaguy@hotmail.com) which keeps him busy for an afternoon. Me, I’m a reader and love a good imaginative fantasy.

I swim for exercise. It is this repetitive motion that can allow my brain to flow. My best ideas come when I swim, yet people say I can’t think of anything more boring than doing laps.

Fun is something we forget to schedule in our diaries. Often we’ll complain if we have to go out, because we’re tired. Yet when we start having fun, suddenly we’re less tired. I like to play Canasta with my husband, my brother and his wife, we insult each other and crow when we win like Peter Pan. Our kids often play, it’s the only time they talk to us, because we’re having fun then.

Great reminder about one of the good things in life. Thanks.

At age 22, Rich's very first business involved taking over a failing clothing store, which at that time, was doing 1.5 million dollars in sales (even though the breakeven was a whopping $3 million!) Within three years, the store was cranking in well over $6.5 million - with 25% of it dropping directly to the bottom line!
