I’ve got one heck of a great object lesson for you today, courtesy of a guy named Dennis Tays …
In The Attention Age Doctrine II, I showed you how powerful this new two-way Internet — Web 2.0 — can be.
I documented why everyday people have far more credibility and influence than we marketers do … and I urged you to use message boards, blogs, forums and social networking sites to create buzz for your product.
But I left one pretty important thing out …
No matter how much value you give away for free … no matter how superior your product is … and no matter how reasonable your price is …
Not everyone on the web will thank you, trust you or praise you – and some poor, tortured souls will skin you alive, just for sport.
Take Dennis Tays, for example …
Yesterday, around 3:30 PM, Dennis left a negative, angry, insulting comment here on the blog.
He said I’m to blame for the fact that he isn’t a maven in his industry.
He presented a laundry list of excuses why he isn’t making progress on the Web.
He demanded that those of us who have made it GIVE him our expertise … our web departments … our entire marketing machines — totally free of charge.
Now, some folks would have deleted that comment the minute it appeared.
Not me!
Crazy like a Fox …
Instead, I just sat back and smiled and waited …
And sure enough, a fight broke out.
At first, a few people seemed to agree with Dennis. Then, my champions charged to my defense and pounded the naysayers within an inch of their lives.
Before you know it, people throwing virtual tables and chairs at each other … smashing virtual whiskey bottles over each others’ heads … and giving each other virtual noogies.
… And what were they thinking about … fighting about … giving their undivided attention to? Why, little old ME, of course!
And of course, every comment … every insult … every retort … and every word of praise has been dutifully recorded on the World Wide Web.
And it will be there for anyone to see, forever.
And you know what else?
Everyone who reads that thread will be more interested … more curious … and more determined to hear more about me, The Attention Age Doctrine II and of course, the exciting new product I’m introducing next week.
So THANK YOU, Dennis Tays!
Your controversial, abrasive, insulting comment – and the response from real people to that comment — is EXACTLY the kind of thing that electrifies a market.
It doesn’t matter that your motive was to attack me. You did me an enormous favor!
And I’m so thankful, I’ve created a valuable gift to thank Dennis — and more importantly, to give YOU an uber-powerful tool.
It’s a special report that shows you step-by-step, how to monitor everything anybody says about you anywhere on the Internet.
Every time anyone mentions your name or your product’s name, you’re notified instantly – so you can join the conversation … snag precious testimonials … and discover key selling objections that, once addressed, can drive your response and sales through the ever-lovin’ roof!
Download it by clicking the link below – and while you’re there, check out the free-for-all Dennis started. It’s great fun!

Thanks for another great tool Rich. I’m still trying to figure it out (the interface and concept is simple enough you’d think I could get it).
Any idea when you’ll be posting the 66 seconds videos? I’ve been documenting my results at my blog http://www.reginabusinessblog.com.
Thanks for letting me borrow some attention!

Thanks Rich - that will be hugely useful!
I want to spread the love in return. This is an organisational and logistical tip, rather than a tool.
Take a look at your working environment. If you have a lot of LCD screens, noticeboards, flashing lights, mobile phones, telephones, post-its etc - and you can see them in your peripheral vision - reasearch has shown that this has a huge impact on your ability to concentrate and keep your brain in “up time”.
This kind of office set-up is literally forcing your brain into a virtual hypnotic state! Not good for focussed concentration guys - it will increase your chances of being distracted.
Try this. Move all these ‘attention demanders’ towards your foevic vision. In other words if you currently have an LCD screen against a wall, move it forwards and put your noticeboard behind it and slightly above. There’s a good reason why the best PA’s in the world have all those post-its on their computer screen…it works! Place your phone in front of you at your desk.
Obviously you’re going to want to do this and retain a level of easthetic quality…and obviously you’re not going to be able to get everything into your immediate field of vision…but the principle is sound - reduce the number of ‘attention demanders’ in your wider field of vision.
I’ll have a look and dig out the study,,,it was research done with submarine radar operators and air-traffic controllers…V.interesting! This tool Rich has given us will help too.
Thanks again for that Rich
James

Hi James - that’s a great tip - I hadn;t realised how “busy” my mind was with all those peripheral things to keep draining my attention. It now feels a LOT easier to concentrate! It’s the small tips that make the big differences, hey.
I have something to say that perhaps others in my situation would not. I try to be very honest with myself. It seems to make life on the whole a lot more pleasant. So listen up Dennis Tays!
Rich and quite a few other people in this business have gone through the struggles I am going through right now and have paid their dues. Anything that the Gentlemen or Ladies have, whom I revere and are successful on the net has been earned. People like Albert Grande, the Wellman guys, James Grandstaff, Joel Comm, the Champignys, Xaiver Nelson,…..I could go on adnauseum, they have all earned their success.
Dennis only the ones that earn it deserve to be ‘mavens’ in the industry. You don’t earn anything by making excuses. If any of the people I revere give me anything for free I am grateful particularly if is information of the calibur young Rich is giving.
Sometimes I think the price tag on some products or courses is rather high but I don’t have to buy them do I? Got news for you. A lot of the products I would like to buy but can’t afford. But there is no way on this good earth they owe you or me a dang thing.
Another word in your ear Dennis, I am told success is much sweeter if you get from A to B on your own steam. Get off the pity pot Dennis and be real with yourself, your life and others. Anything in life requires you to put in a little work of your own into it and to be honest with yourself and others.
Just as a post script I would like you to know that a lot of the people in business on the net have been more than kind to me with their resources and their time. You know who you are and I will take this opportunity to thank you.
My browser just frooze. I’m not sure, if it went through. So I try it again.
Hi Rich!
I just noticed that I rank #1 on Google for attention ebiz out of some 80,000 results. Not that this is a great phrase people are searching for like crazy, but it’s till nice.
Same for Schefren Furst.
Wanna check?
Google: attention ebiz
Google: schefren furst
* All with a nice indented second search result.
* All this without explicit SEO.
Really good chances that the video submissions did this.
What else?
Hey people, probably you want to check out my humle video and vote for it.
John’s 60 seconds - Pay Attention!
Anyway: Thanks Rich
Thanks people.
Nice thread.
Blogs rock.
Seeya soon.
Well done Rich!
While I don’t always agree 100% with your every thought or idea, I totally agree with you on this Dennis Tays thing!
What a crybaby! Wanting you to hand him the keys to the kingdom totally for free?!?!? Is the man on drugs, or just a troll trying to stir up a bit of action on your blog ;-) (that would be a terrible thing to do, wouldn’t it lol)?
Like the rest of your readers, I do have ambitions to be a successful maven (or something of that nature) and have worked hard for minimal reward over the last 10 years.
I have invested my own time AND money (and I was not a well paid individual until recently), grown my skills and moved 1 step forward slowly but steadily.
In the last year or so, things are finally starting to come together - I now have my dream job working in the SEO/AdWords PPC industry, I am earning decent money, and my online business is set to explode in the next 6 months.
BUT… Dennis, here’s a big bloody clue for you - I had to sacrifice beforehand to get to where I am today, and nobody has EVER handed it to me on a plate, certainly no gurus!
So, stop whining and start working. I once heard a saying I liked that seems highly relevent here: “The harder I work, the more lucky I get!”
Instead of investing your efforts & emotions into whining & complaining and being a VICTIM, pull your finger out of your you-know-what and WORK!!!!!!!!!
All things considering, I think Rich was fairly kind to you Dennis - if you had left a post like that on my blog, I would have BLASTED you to kingdom come about it ;-) whereas he was firm & strong but not cruel…
OK, back 2 u Rich - keep up the good work (love the reports) and lets hope the Dennis Tays of the world learn a valuable lesson here.

Don’t you just LOVE controversy???
I most definitely do it gets your prouct out and name for NOTHING and happy sales thereafter.
Dennis said: You asked what might be preventing me from becoming the maven of my market…in a single word…â€you.â€
You? Is Dennis talking in the 3rd person & referring to himself? Haha.
Dennis Said: Buying all of the expensive, fancy-wrapped products in the world isn’t going to make it happen.
I totally agree on that.
No point being bitter & blaming others for your lack of success, why not take that time & energy to build your business? Ain’t that more productive? No point being bitter because you cannot afford the program, actually you can afford to do without it!
Ever since I stop buying into the latest ideas, ebooks, software, tips, tricks, etc, I got more time to focus on building my business & soon, I was making a full time income 100% online.
No, I don’t need to go for coaching or some seminars to learn the latest stuff from the “gurus”.
Rich, you walk your talk. i like your transparency…it keeps me coming back to you.
As for the Reputation Management Tool its awsome, considering how many people still trying to manage their brands the old fashion way.
Here where i live in Botswana, the Government has recently launched the country’s brand…and I have the “secret” to what people really think about Botswana…guess I’ll be pitching for “Reputation Report Services” shortly.(LOL)
In short your’e a star, even my wife knows it. Thanks for making me see the possibilities about myself. On my way to Mavenhood. Thanks!
Rich, like all else, there’s a downside.
An archived thread on an email discussion list I used to participate on in 1997 came up as SERP result #1 on a search for ‘Dr.Mani’ - for over 6 years!
That was the ONLY discussion, in over 700 posts on the list, where I was called something derogatory… and the responses were threaded, so you’d have to click on 3 more links before getting to the first ‘defense’ post.
I can’t prove it, but am sure my name, brand and reputation didn’t get a boost from such ranking on search engines!
Deliberately provoking such reactions may not be the best strategy, considering how long a memory search engines tend to have.
All success
Dr.Mani
Rich NEVER provoked such negative reactions.
But whenever a person is having lots of attention, there will always be naysayers.
Bill Cosby once said, “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.”
Further to the reply I posted earlier to Dennis, here’s a couple of free tips.
1. I got more exposure for my video because as soon as I saw Danny Arrington’s post about his Squidoo Lens I took the trouble to go there and enter his competition (and rate his lens ;-) ).
Maybe I won’t win one of the prizes but I certainly increased my chances by doing something that took just 5 minutes of my time.
2. Well-known marketers will sometimes give you something free if you ask in the right way and offer to do something in exchange.
Don’t write
“I’m a miserable failure - give me your product because the world owes me a living”.
Say something like
“I really wanted to get your product because it will (help me in this way). Would it be possible to have a copy in return for writing articles, making headers (whatever you can do).
Of course I wouldn’t expect to receive the product until I have delivered my end of the bargain”.
This way it becomes a mutually beneficial transaction and the marketer has some assurance s/he isn’t being taken for a ride.
Martin
P.S. Take a leaf out of Danny’s book. I am very happy to refer to him because he has taken positive action and added value to this blog.
Sounds to me that Richard has a “victim mentality”.
A word of advice - Success is WITHIN you, not someone else (Rich), not in a company, and not in a product.
Start taking 100% responsibility for your actions and even YOUR lack of actions. People like Richard need a lobotomy and come to this realization.
Success doesn’t come to those who wait. You can make money or you can make excuses, but you can’t do both!

Hey Dr. Mani,

Rich, thanks so much for providing this reputation management tool. I noticed you promised it in the Attention Age doctrine II and have asked my assistant to scour that document for a reference to the tool, so that I could ask you for it. Thanks for giving it out before I had to ask :)
I have a technical question of sorts. What if I want to monitor a term such as Love Coach Blog - my blog - which I do. When I put in the three words, I get back feed of every post on the world that has the word blog in it. But if I put in in quotes - “Love Coach Blog” - the feed won’t load at all as Google reader tells me the file is not correctly formatted. Tips?
Thanks so much again!! The attention age doctrine II was amazing and made me look at my business in a whole new way.
I enjoyed the heated debate between you and Dennis (although it was more just people responding to both of your comments than an actual debate). Dennis has a point about it being much harder for somebody who hasn’t achieved success to implement a new idea than for somebody who has a proven track record to do it. However, if I were in his situation (and I kind of am) I would be appreciative of the fact that you were offering anything to us for free at all. Even if the Attention Age Doctrine was one page long and was a setup for some huge seminar that we would have to fork over a gazillion dollars for, I wouldn’t care as long as I took away one piece of valuable advice from it.
People in his shoes need to go out there and absorb all the free content that exists from the experts. I do this on a regular basis with both Rich and John Reese as well as reading up on forums that people post their experiences on. I would understand any anger by Dennis if he paid for the doctrine and was disatisfied, but he didn’t nor does he have to pay for this blog and the valuable content distributed through it.
People need to stop complaining over free content being offered. Either take the advice being offered or don’t. I could ramble on about my frustrations about complainers over free things, but I dont’ want to turn this into a book.
By the way, I agree that his negative comments did in fact help you gain exposure, but your whole blog post on Dennis definitely helped him a LOT more.
Hey Rich:
SINCE ANDREA YAGER’S VIDEOS ARE COMPELLING, HILARIOUS, AND PRODUCE AWESOME RESULTS maybe she should do another video. This time the subject could be about how it’s never to late to catch a clue! Subtitled: Dennis, Just For You!
She’ll get even more massive ATTENTION for The Attention Age Doctrine pt. 2 and for Strategic Profits.
I think it’s got legs Rich.
But this is your show Rich.
Best to you,

You took the low road with Dennis and by mocking him, you’ve made yourself look bad. Manufactured controversy is nothing to be proud of…
“Everyone who reads that thread will be more interested … more curious … and more determined to hear more about me, The Attention Age Doctrine II and of course, the exciting new product I’m introducing next week.”
Do you really believe this?
Here is the guaranteed MOS (Massive Online Success) formula for you to chew on!
MOS = TSLOA + MSM + Web2.0 + FLATCY x (P+L)
Massive Online Success = The Secret Law of AttrAction + My Story Marketing + Web2.0 + Free leads and traffic chasing you X (Passion + Leadership)
For me, one of the most important parts of that formula is MSM or My Story Marketing. If you can learn to apply JUST THAT to your Web2.0 strategy, you will be ahead of most. Here is a video I did about MSM a while back (August). Enjoy.

Help please …
First, thank you very much Rich for sharing so much valuable information here on your blog and in your writings! You’re awesome.
I have set up my iGoogle page (very cool) but I can’t seem to get the Google Reader to load onto that page … it just says “Loading” and won’t put the info into the box.
Now I also need to know how to put the actual Reputation Management Tool onto my page. It’s on my desktop … now what? Also, do I have to run a search for each of my terms and save them to my desktop? Or do I just save it there until I load it elsewhere and then search?
Thanks for any help … I really appreciate it ;)
*SmiLes* Suzanne
Hey Suzanne,
go to the page Rich supplied, enter your keywords and then save the file. You can load this into your Google Reader by going to the tool, then selecting Import/Export.
If Google Reader doesn’t work at IGoogle, try again later the day or by restarting your computer.
-Dave
Dave ~ Thank you so much for your response.
“You can load this into your Google Reader by going to the tool, then selecting Import/Export.”
Do you mean the tool that is now on my desktop? Or the Google Reader? I have tried opening the one on my desktop and it says I don’t the software to open it … And I don’t see an import/export on the Reader page? I’m sorry … I’m somewhat technically challenged! LOL
Thanks again … Suzanne
Thanks again Dave (and Rich) … I think I finally got it figured out (now that reader decided to actually show up on my page) and now I’ll just have some fun customizing it all. I really do appreciate the support ;) *SmiLes* Suzanne
Until I read “Eavesdropping on the Internet”, I had absolutely no idea iGoogle, Google Reader, etc even existed.
I now have an iGoogle page and G. Reader.
This has prompted quite few questions.
Can I please have the address of the Forum so that I can ask questions there.
I can’t believe how often my name comes up with postings, articles, what others say, and material completely unrelated to my 2 blogs, eg voting on a prose passage on a literary website.
It was so much fun.
Thanks very much Rich,
Cheers,
Gloria
Wow! If there’s a downside to controversy, this is a great example of the upside when it’s seen as an asset instead of a liability. Just another reason to take seriously the changes that “new media marketing”/web 2.0 are making to the marketing landscape.
A good quote I heard this week applies to the challenges of the internet marketing learning curve:
“You have 3 choices: Be Good. Get Good. Give Up.”
Good stuff Rich. Keep it coming.

Hi Rich, hi guys and gals - hi everyone!
First of all - congratulations to Rich on yet another successful launch! You proved it to all of us ONCE AGAIN that we should not be afraid of doing Product Launches during the month of December! Hey - Joel Comm did it, you did it - every Church sells their stuff just before Christmas, as well as every mall in your neighborhood - and so should you!!!
Number two - thanks to you, Rich for offering us the Reputation tool…just to add my two cents to it…I found another 2 great tools that help you boost your online popularity and boost your reputation on the web - here’s my Christmas gift to all of you guys who are seeking Mavenship in your field in the upcoming years:
1. Naymz.com (http://www.naymz.com)- Reputation Management and Networking for professionals (check out my Profile on Naymz if you are wondering how it works: http://www.naymz.com/search/val/slastnikov/751079
2. MyHeritage.com (http://www.myheritage.com). This is a great system that allows anyone like you and I to create a site for their family and even publish their family tree on the Internet. The beauty of this one is that it is multi-lingual, thus it helps you instantly establish your online presence globally!
If you don’t believe me - do a search on Google for my name - and see for yourself!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you, Rich - and the same to all members of your amazing blog community!
Dear Richy Rich
So your champions stepped up to save you…., very sorry that you needed them to do such a brave thing for you, but you must be so very proud of them.
You do mean the ass kissers, that everyone with a few bucks has, those who follow them around and agree with everything they say. Just like the folks who kept sending money to Jim Baker even after he was arrested.
I can see how you like to take someone’s words and twist them around to try and get your blind sheep to look in a direction away from you and the truth. Why do you try to make anyone who exposes the truth appear to be twisted, tortured, and somehow delusional?
If you had an honest bone in your body, you’d admit that 99.9 % of all of these way over-priced products that you and your fellow peddlers are pushing won’t benefit one tenth of one percent of the people who purchase them, mostly because there’s no real followup and support.
As I attempted to state in my earlier response, most of the “sheep” will blindly purchase your golden idol thinking that it will be the answer to their prayers. In reality, unless you’re an established Interent Marketer none of these tidbits will help any of these poor desperate souls make a single dollar, and the sad part about all of this is, that you know this all too well…..
None of you guys put a warning notice that says, “unless you’re an already established Interent Marketer, who has the staff that I have, the experience, the money, the exisiting name recognition, etc. etc. etc, there’s a high probability that purchasing this product won’t result in anything more than you being releaved of your hard earned money.”
You can always fall back and say, “Oh, what are you talking about, I started out with nothing and I made it.” Which as I also tried to state before, when you started it was far easier to “make it,” and if you’d get real honest again, you did it coming from a related background with already exisiting connections and money that none of the people purchasing your products has.
So by selling these products and saying, “Oh my goodness, this works for me and my organization, and therefore it’s going to work for you as well,” is a misuse of your position, because it just isn’t true.
I’d like to see one of you guys hire an independant organization that would audit how many people purchased your wonderful products, and just how many of them actually made any money from them, and then publish the findings. It would be less than one tenth of one percent who really benefited, and you know it.
So by twisting what I said around to make it sound as if I was asking for a handout, you’ve totally proven my point as to what you’re made of and where you’re coming from. It’s just to make a buck, and it’s not to really help anyone.
Instead of trying to make me look like someone I’m not, why didn’t you reply back directly to me and ask me to clarify any points that I made that you either didn’t agree with or understand? It’s simply because you didn’t want to clarify, nor discuss anything, you simply wanted to see how much mileage you could get out of my comments after distorting what I really said.
I never asked for a handout. I asked for a real offering. Just so you don’t turn the word “offering” around, I don’t mean church offering, donation, or handout. I mean something that offered a bit of real human interest and caring, something that really helped the majority of people. Something that isn’t just a piece of software, an ebook, or a CD. Those things may pump your ego up and make “YOU” a lot of money, but they don’t help the vast majority of people who purchase them.
You guys always say things like, “Well it’s not going to help you if you don’t use it. Over 90% of the people who purchase these wonderful products of mine never use them, so how are they going to profit from them?” Have you ever asked yourself why over 90% of the people who purchase them never use them? Have you ever asked the people who purchase them why they don’t use them, of if they did use them, why they haven’t been able to build the organization that you have? I didn’t think so. That would take too much time, and you couldn’t charge them any money for taking your survey, so why would you want to do that.
If you did, you might find out that most people don’t have all of the pieces that you have to put products like that to use. Once they buy them and attempt to use them, they realize they don’t have all of the missing pieces to earn a penny from your most wonderful product. Another thing you know, is that the majority of them are going to be too embarrassed to admit it, and they just slink off into the darkness looking for the next miracle product.
So the real point here is that if you really gave a damn about anyone making it, you would have said, “Do any of you guys agree with anything that Dennis is saying here, and if you do, what do you feel that I could do to be different, to make a real difference, and really help all of you?” What I was asking for, and what 99% of everyone else out there is asking for, is more than just an ebook, or a CD that costs $2,000.00 plus.
What people would really like would be a mentoring program along with the expensive ebooks and CD’s. Something that could fill in all of the missing parts. Someone who would care enough to take the time to make sure that everyone who plunked down all of that money, got their money’s worth and were able to effectively put it to use and make some money with it.
Your inflated ego may tell you that simply telling people bits and pieces of “how you made it,” is worth thousands of dollars to them, but that isn’t the real reason that most people are purchasing your stuff. Sure, your little followers will cow cow up to you and tell you what your ego wants to hear simply because they think that’s how they’re going to win you over the way you’ve won them over, “By telling someone something they want to hear.!”
If any of them had a lick of sense, they’d ask, “Hey, why don’t you offer something as backup to really help us?” Proof that you wouldn’t entertain that idea is the fact that you made a statement that I had the gaul to ask you to open your organization up to common folks like us. Why wouldn’t you want to open your organization up to us? After all, where did your organization come from? Didn’t it come from the contributions of the very people you are wanting to refuse access to?
My suggestion to do these things wasn’t with the idea that it be for free as you attempted to make it sound. Even if it was, is doing something for free somehow against your good business ethics? The suggestion was to go the extra mile, to offer something really different and meaningful, to do something that might really make you stand out as someone who really cared.
It looks as if you totally missed the point, and even though you’ll deny that, and attempt to turn everything I’ve said around and get some additional mileage out of this for your own selfish gains, I’m sure many people can see through what you’re doing.
If there were a way to converse with you via direct email, or phone, I’d prefer to that, but there’s no way that the “commom folk” are allowed to do that. Why would you want to do that when you can distort what I say and get some mileage out of your distortions? All you want to do is to turn a valid question into a circus act!
My only hope is that one of your fellow peddlers will see this and think what a novel idea it might be to really offer something more than an over-priced ebook. That one of you will become the hundredth money, break from the pack, and walk your talk about really offering something of value.
Your Most Humble Admirer,
Dennis Tays
