Do You Think Like A Successful Online Business Owner?

todd brownby Todd Brown

I was reminded, last night, of a major “success principle” I learned many moons ago.

I can honestly say, it’s had a pretty hefty impact on my thinking, actions, attitude, and bank account since learning it.

And while Rich is taking the day off from blogging today – since he’s off sharing some insights and his marketing mojo with the folks at Infusionsoft – I figured I’d quickly pass this principle your way.

Cool?

Cool.

The principle came back to the top of my consciousness last night while I was watching television with my kids.

I think we were watching Hanna Montana. Or maybe iCarly.  I don’t know.

Either way, I perked up when this cool… success-related… commercial came on.

“Instead of asking why; ask why not”, the smooth Barry White-esk narrator shared as the same words faded in and out on the screen.

Hmmmm. Got me thinking about this thing I once read in a little T.Harv Eker book.

As soon as I read it, my thinking about success and achievement changed for ever.

To paraphrase the blurb from Eker’s book:

“Poor people think in terms of ‘either/or’. Wealthy people think in terms of ‘both’.”

Simply put, what this means – to me at least – is that when the most successful people are faced with the choice between having one of two things, outcomes, or results… instead of thinking about achieving either/or… they think about how get or achieve both.

You’ll notice, unfortunately, how many new online entrepreneurs think in terms of either/or.

For example, many online entrepreneurs think they must choose between either: making a lot of money online or using their new online business to gain lots of personal freedom and free time.  In other words, they think they must choose, and can only have, one of those.

Instead, what the most successful online entrepreneurs have done – and what we teach our Founders Club Members to do – is think about how can you achieve both. How can you make maximum money from your business while it gives you maximum free time and freedom.

I highly recommend you begin to pay attention to your thinking when faced with decisions and choices. And, when pondering which of two options you think you must choose between… instead… take some time to think about how you can have BOTH.

    Hi Todd

Great post, it hacks at the root of where everybody gets it wrong, to different extents and in different arenas. And I’m absolutely including myself here LOL.

Your key phrase to me is “pay attention to your thinking when faced with decisions and choices….”.

Mostly, it’s the subconscious decisions we make – the ones that we don’t even realize we’re making – that keep us stuck in situations that are less than we would ideally want them to be.

Our underlying beliefs – such as the one you mentioned, assuming that time has to be traded for money – guide our actions. It’s very hard (in my view, impossible) to act consistently outside of your core beliefs about what is true – about yourself, and about the world.

That seems to be “bad news”.. until we realize that with effort, we can change your beliefs. Once we do so – our actions, and our results, change.

“pay attention to your thinking when faced with decisions and choices……”

    All the best – Sean

What a true statement, That was a great book.

Rich people also think in terms of quality and abundance.

Nothing is unreachable and everything is possible. Rich people do think both! gotta keep that in mind! something to always remember!

Thanks for reminding me of that Todd!

    Take care!

yep and I always try to get both. The problems I had in getting both my choice is time management. That’s what I need to correct and I realized it had to start from now.

Mindset either unites or separates people from their goals.

    Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Rich – Having the right mindset is important in ANY kind of business you’re in. Remember, it’s passion, pain, then profit!

Sometimes it takes a change in mindset to become successful. I do agree that you don’t have to choose between two kinds of success. Why choose when it’s entirely possible to have both, right? Still, it is important to have a clear goal in mind, so that you don’t get derailed.

P.S. Most of the time, success takes a lot of preparation. What you want should be clear in your head, and usually it helps to get it down on paper. You can check out this article http://budurl.com/y3cf for a few key things that might help you get started on the road to success.

    Hi Todd,

You might like the book “Why Not?” by Barry Nalebuff and Ian Ayres, sounds like you might enjoy it.

Another Rich/poor comparison that has stuck with me over the years isn’t so much about thinking, but about actions.

Poor people buy things, middle class people buy liabilities, rich people buy assets.

    Nice post btw :)
