Rich's current Twitter status:hanging with my family thinking... I will never be as young as i am right now at this moment
“And it’s working like gangbusters. Check out this video below I just got from one of my star pupils, Tellman Knudson.”
So yesterday I spent about 30 minutes on the phone swapping stories with an old college buddy, Josh.
I hadn’t spoken to him in years - but he tracked me down on the internet, sent me an email, and eventually it made it into my personal email box.
So, I called, we caught up, reminisced about our crazy days, and then the conversation turned serious.
Josh was currently experiencing hard times in his business. He’d noticed all the mentions of me and the success I’ve created for others while trying to find me. He wondered if I would give him some advice.
I agreed - and cutting to the chase, he lasered in on this crucial question…
Rich, you’re successful and you’ve made lots of others successful - is there one thing that all successes have in common that the unsuccessful seem to miss?
And without even a second of thought I shot back, “Leverage”.
So what exactly is “leverage”?
Well, one dictionary defines it as “the mechanical advantage or power gained by using a lever.” Sounds simple enough, but you have to read between the lines
here.
Listen, success in all areas really comes down to getting the most out of the least. It’s what Jay Abraham and real-estate investors refer to as “highest and best use”.
To get the highest and best use – you first must be clear about your objectives.
An example from my personal life - I want to make sure the time I spend with my daughters is quality time that is memorable, shapes their character, is fun, educational, and deepens the bond between us.
In my business life I want to positively impact as many entrepreneurs as I can and make the business as successful as possible and I want to do it with the least amount of work possible.
Now that I’m clear about what I want…
A: Leverage. Leverage is the backbone of success - because no matter whether we’re talking business or personal life… the amount of leverage you create will determine how much success you achieve and how hard you have to work for it.
Before we get to Tellman’s video, Here are a few ways to get more leverage in your personal life:
Maintenance work - I don’t do any. I’m not Mr. Handy anyway. Instead we have a handyman come around each month to take care of those tasks.
Bills - I don’t spend time at home with bills. The bills come to the office and get paid by our accounting dept. When I was just starting out and didn’t have an accounting dept. I made a deal with my accountant and his bookkeeper to handle it all.
Chores - like keeping the pool clean, and the grass cut… all offloaded to pros - the pool guy, the gardener, etc…
Alright, before you jump down my throat - don’t miss my point by telling me you can’t afford to lay off these responsibilities on others, because you can.
In business you can’t do everything either - so the things you do need to net you the maximum. That’s the whole purpose of strategy - how to allocate your scarce resources to maximize your results. And those decisions always come down to where you get the most leverage for your efforts.
That’s one of the reasons I created the Business Growth System - to assist entrepreneurs by showing them how they could achieve better results while working far less by leveraging the tools I’ve developed and discovered in my work with businesses. On the operations side, activities like process mapping, project management that works, and standard operating procedures provide time-leverage.
But one of the most powerful places to apply leverage is Marketing….
For example, in the Attention Age Doctrine 2, I talk at length about gaining leverage by “piggy backing”. That’s the method where you use another’s fame and celebrity to advance your own business by partnering (or piggy-backing) with their name.
This is simply one of the fastest and easiest ways to take your product from concept to cash-cow. You do all the work–they let you use their name and/or image for a cut of the profits.
I’ve done this time and time again in every business I’ve owned. For example…
And those are just a few examples–I have many more. But the point I’m trying to make is this…
Whether it’s celebrity or social media or something else of intrinsic value, use it to the fullest potential by attaching it somehow to your business to create leverage.
I can’t stress this enough, it’s one of the mainstays of my business, and probably the one concept I drive home hardest to the students in my top-tier coaching program.
And it’s working like gangbusters. Check out this video I just got from one of my star pupils, Tellman Knudson.
Hear more about leverage and how Tellman has been able to make a tremendous difference in his life, and consequently in other people’s lives and businesses.
So today–right now—Identify the top 3 areas in your life and in your business that you need to get more leverage. What are they and how will you get that leverage? Leave a comment and share your thoughts with me and everyone else. .
Don’t leave here without doing it because I want to know your thoughts and who knows, there may be more coming to help you in those areas. But you have to tell me first.
Now, GO!
Rich
Leverage leverage leverage? Do you not agree though that it takes some sweat to get there? Not everyone can just hire a handy man.
Zach- when you said “it takes sweat to get there”, you were right. Breaking a sweat is just one way to get
the leverage you need, others do it in many different ways,
but we all end up with leverage as the key.
I want 100 no’s a week. I need to talk to more people & do follow ups in wanting 2 to 6 new people per month.
Wasn’t it Archimedes who said “give me a lever & I can move the world”?
Leverage is, as you say Rich, the way to go.
If you plot out all the tasks involved in your life (think that amazing big mind map you had in one of your Manifesto reports showing EVERYTHING involved in running a successful business), you’ll soon see there are HEAPS of things that are NOT important, but we still assign valuable time to them, instead of the truly important.
There’s a difference between urgent & important, and if you want to maximize your productivity AND enjoyment & value in life (not just in your business life), then it is a great idea to “outsource” the unimportant, but potentially urgent, and just focus on what truly makes a difference.
As an example, in my business life, I do need to be able to build websites and add graphics to them so they look professional, but it’s not really my forte.
So, rather than take weeks to put together something, I just pay a designer or a web master to do it, OR I buy pre-made templates that suit my needs. It’s done MUCH quicker than if I were to fuss & fret over it for weeks at a time.
This sort of thing doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but the savings in my time way outweigh the $ cost of paying for these things, and I get my important stuff done quick!
Lastly, if you’ve got kids, get them to do the chores
teach them the value of contributing to the household (since they benefit from your earning capacity) AND don’t pay them for this stuff - instead, explain to them that this is their “job” in order to get food, housing, treats and so forth, just like u have to work a job or business to be able to have these things.
HOWEVER, also give them permission to get part time work to earn their own money after they take care of their chores - that way, you’re teaching them the value of hard work and working to achieve their own goals. You do them NO FAVOURS by paying them to do household chores.
Oh, and love them regardless.
Thanks Rich - a good explanation of the concept.

I am willing to outsource many of my time consuming maintaiing jobs however I want the income to sustain these private specialists. At this time I am just existing month to month.
Right on Rich!
I haven’t mowed the lawns in years. I try and offload as much as I can - it is critical if you want to get things done.
Didn’t someone say…”Many hands make light work”.
Well how about…”Look Mum! No hands!”
Everybody can leverage household tasks AND business tasks to get more done. The kid down the street will mow your lawn. The old lady across the road will iron your shirts for a couple of bucks (cash in hand).
Just a little bit of creativity and everyone can free up more time.
My Golden Rule for housework… “if it’s not therapeutic, don’t do it!”
Love ya work Rich!
Cheers
Scott
Hi Rich,
You are so correct with what you say and I can vouch for using leverage myself, e.g. work around the house/garden - bring in the specialists.
One point I do want to bring up though is that there are things that you should leverage but I do them myself for therapeutic reasons - case in point the lawn(Sorry Scott Groves). I personally find this fulfilling to do this myself, smell of grass, satisfaction of seeing a good job done, “I did that”, clears the mind, etc.
And from a business sense, there is nothing like using leverage in taking advantage of technology or using resources to automate mundane tasks.
Great post
Cheers
Gavin
Perfectly put! I get too caught up doing everything, because I can and because cashflow is tight right now, yet doing everything doesn’t produce the results I want. Laser focus on the leverage points and the rest will fall in place.
Great reminder about the “piggy back” method! I’ve got a new venture we’re launching that can be piggy backed off quite a few people in my network with great followings. While thinking about working with them as I write this, I realize that I could streamline the client fulfillment component to be completely hands off, too, since their endorsement would nearly guarantee the clients would follow their guidance and not need to be converted in person, but rather through teleseminar and webinar!
Focusing on “Highest and Best” led to another higher and better implementation of our model! Thanks for being a ‘pot stirrer’ and being the catalyst for this innovation!!
Be blessed!
-Josh
Hi Rich,
Thanks,
You’ve given me the kick up the backside I needed to leverage some of the clients I have to introduce me to more business leaders in my area.
I’m also looking to leverage the power of JV’s more in both my physical and online business.
Great stuff,
Alex

Rich…Nail on the head, nail on the head! Leverage is what it’s all about, although it does take alot of work to properly systemize your business - especially if it’s not all online.
great advice, you’re a genuis!

Thanks Rich,
My 3 top areas are:
1. Building my virtual coaching business (see URL) - getting 200+ visitors per week currently, but little conversion to buy coaching and e-practice building products. Yet I have many freebies on offer. Maybe too many?
2. Launching and expanding my other e-Businesses (for wealth creation and business building)
3. Consolidating my earnings in existing business consulting here in South Africa - mainly in the petrochemical industry
I like your blogs thus far and thanks for this virtual eCoaching service - you have given me an idea…..!

Great post Rich… I struggle with this concept. Being a self-employed electrical trades person I always tend to default to doing the jobs myself and making the most profit.
Unfortunately I’ve transfered this bad habit to my online business, thinking I’ll do everything myself to save the money. I think I’m also scared of hiring outside help, in case they steal my idea.
I know it’s a silly reason… and I’m slowly getting over it.

Creating Abundance In Life
Leveraging by outsourcing is great when you find the right people to use. I still have available funds at Rent-A-Coder with no immediate plans on using it, after getting frustrated with going through arbitration or fixing programs I paid to have done. Those programmers were chosen for the high scores they got from other customers. Others I have spoken with swear by the coders they found.
So leveraging comes down to finding those who are right for you. That is true in all areas of business, including the names you leverage. Finding the right person or team can make or break your project. Teaming up with someone who specializes in building a mailing list may not benefit a PPC project as much as teaming up with someone who specializes in PPC would.
Learning HOW to find the right people should be one of the next steps in the process, after defining your project.
In a word, DYNAMITE! I’ll be plugging “leverage” into my overall business plan(s) and life, in the future.
Would like to know more about the relationship between Joint Ventures and/or using a name/endorsement and “giving them a cut”. Either or? Both? Splits? etc.
Is there any way to get a transcript of Wednesdays discussion with you and Shawn and Tellman? Just can’t be available then.
Thanks again
Hi Rich
I agree with you. The only way to grow your business is to outsource. Bottom line is that you can’t do everything yourself…work on your business not in your business… otherwise you’ll end up with a “job”.
Technology is a great leverage tool too especially for online businesses. Many online tasks can be automated and thus saving time.
Rich,
I would not have any business at all without outsourcing and leverage. Like you I don’t attempt complex home maintenance, car maintenance, or pool maintenance. But I do work at maintaining my business.
This includes making authentic communication with employees, clients and colleagues; ensuring I am kept abreast of developments in my field, and here’s the leverage part - taking information and employing it in multiple contexts and broadcasting it in many different ways.
E-mail today IS still a great medium, but I suspect that web 2.0 and web 3.0 may bring a new mindset to business communications.
Having said that Tellman and Shawn really are giving away excellent information.

Network marketing is another great way of leveraging others’ time to your benefit. Ofcourse, your time is also being used for others’ benefit (that’s the whole point in such a concept). But in a well managed system huge benefits come to those who become part of the structure and work systematically.
An example of network marketing is Quest International which deals in numismatic coins, holiday resorts and other solid products. They use Referral Markting, not MLM (though both fall under Network Marketing). My wife recently became an IR (independent representative) of QI and hopes to earn as much as $3000/- per day after a period of about 4 years.
This is possible due to the marketing strategy of having solid products, avoiding all middle-men, doing online business and leveraging effort of IRs themselves and then paying them back for their effort as commisions.
I am now (once again) thinking how to use the strategy of leveraging in my business.
I think I know what mistake I have been making. My business is of Time & Attendance, Personnel & Payroll, Phone Call Accounting. In other words, a technology company. All these years I have been trying to convince my would be resellers to learn how to install, setup, configure and use the system. And then support the end-user. I offer them higher commision if they do this as compared to if they just give me a reference.
My track record is miserable, to say the least, when it comes to appointing resellers. But after this message from Rich and what I have observed about Quest International, I have come to the conclusion that leveraging must be done in smarter way than what I have been doing.
In QI for example, the only thing my wife has to do as an IR, is to introduce the products of QI to normal people like us. And then, if they want to become an IR themselves, help them by giving them her reference number because you can’t join QI unless introduced by an existing IR.
All the dirty work of collecting money, sending the product to customer, tracking, keeping accounts, sending commisions to IRs etc is done by QI - thus making it easy and attractive for my wife to do business with them.
I should also make it easy for my resellers to do business with me.
I have decided that from now on, I shall only leverage the marketing resources of resellers. And pay them for that. I will stop pushing them to do the techie stuff (dirty stuff as they percieve it), for which I am best suited myself. I feel this change in approach towards leveraging will bear fruits because now my resellers will have to do nothing except introduce their clients to us. And collect money if the deal goes through. It also means that I shall have to meet all end-users, attend meetings and demos to get the deal. But if that’s the way to get business, then so be it. At least I will know what leveraging works.

Hi Rich,
I am trying to use the leverage of learning some great free stuff from Jeff Walkers Product Launch Formula 2 launch event.
To leverage i need to build an event
To leverage i need to interview experts
To leverage i need to create value (free content)

Hi Rich,
No URL……….just a thought for you for whatever it’s worth. In the fields of science and chemistry, it is common knowledge that certain elements will ” sublime ” when subjected to the right set of conditions and circumstances.
Sublimation is simply where an elemental substance changes directly from a solid state into a gaseous state and BYPASSES the internediate liquid state in the process.
I believe that with focal concentration, persistence, belief in what you’re doing and creative imagination, that it is possible to sublimate. Eg I started my business
Skyney Home Income Streams
6 weeks ago with a 100% committment to pursue my objectives and to take calculated risks and to believe in my self enough to commit to the necessary decisions in order to bring about change in my life.
Now 6 weeks later, I am poised ready to launch several business initiatives that are promising to become very substantial income streams and they have literally landed in my lap. A number of opportunities far more substantial than anything I imagned could ever happen…….HAVE happened.
Sublimation?? Perhaps !!
One thing’s for sure……..Going from poor to rich starts with the mind …………and ” sublimation ” to a higher state is a subsequence of one’s application. Therefore we have control over the process of sublimation via the way we apply the mind.
Thanks for the opportunity to offer a thought.

My top 3 challenge areas? Here they are…
1. My market. I’ve built a good size targeted list of prospects that need the various services I offer (credit repair, buying a home, consolidating debt, etc.) My challenge? Not having it consolidated into a CRM or some other manageable format so I can leverage it to the max. After reading this post, I realize I’m guilty of the ‘trying to do it all myself’ trap. I know it’s not effective (common sense, right?) Which leads me to…
2. Control. I need to let go of the false belief that I have the capability to do it all on my own. I’m painfully aware that I need to become better at outsourcing labor-intensive (yet critical) tasks like data entry, web design, processing, administration, etc. I know that implementing this will allow me to focus more on…
3. Building profitable JV relationships. As Rich (and Tellman, among others) are clearly displaying here for us all, the power (and ultimately, profits) all begin and thrive by building solid relationships. Guess what? It’s pretty damn tough to do this when you’re bogged down with $8/hour work like chasing paper and managing contact databases.
Ultimately, for me, I think it boils down to getting out of ‘employee’ mode…and back into ‘business owner’ mode.
Time to become ‘puppet master’ again instead of ‘puppet.’
Besides, it kinda hurts when the strings get pulled, knowhatImean?
Thanks a million, Rich, for waking me up and opening my eyes to what I knew all along deep down inside.
You freakin’ rock for providing truly killer content…gratis!
Oh, and thanks for letting me ‘gush.’ It felt good!

Hey Rich;
Thanks for your great post,I just want to comment here that too many of us are really shy at asking for help so we usually have no chance of leveraging, but if you really do believe that you really do deserve to be helped, chances are you will get help.Yes guys there are thousands of people out there looking for somebody to help them, give them the chance to do so.
Thanks for your help ,Rich.

Hi Rich,
Leverage?
Lets see…
Whose reputation/name can I use
as leverage?
Let’s see…
Aww, shucks!
Can’t think of anyone!
As Rich mentioned in a previous post - he worked hard - damn hard - to get to where he is.
Leverage requires the same.
That crucial “celebrity” contact probably won’t be created with one attempt. Keep working.
The outsourced ebook or software will not be perfect the first time. Keep working.
Sales produced through a solid JV force will not set you up for life. Keep working.
Leverage, though powerful, still requires force to get the benefit. That’s one of the things that Rich has hit time and again.
A note on his Business Growth System. It’s solid process for creating a real online business. It will help you leverage your personal strengths and develop a plan for longevity.
Peace,
Paul

Hey Rich,
I won the Joint Venture competition with Andrew Fox and leveraged the heck out of that one JV success in order to attract other JV partners to promote my product.
I’m now starting to outsource things like traffic tasks, article writing and all the time consuming things that were holding me back.
Leverage is definitely the way to success.

A very useful blog Rich.
But I’m not sure it addresses the real problems faced by people who are completely new to online marketing. Many people give mlm/network/affiliate marketing a go because they already have financial problems. And these people often do not have any mney to spend on leverage.
Sadly, this can leave people wide open to offers, often from mlm companies, that imply they will help someone build their business. I picked this up reading Paulne’s earlier post as well as getting feedback from many in my own group.
Leverage can also be about trade offs and can often be done for free or for very little cost. For example, I often get a marketing student to work with me from the local university - I get work done in return for them completing a practical project that counts towards their degree.
Or I delegate work to members of my group so that they can see exactly the steps that I am taking to build my own business. By dong things like setting up a data capture page for me they usually find it far easier to go on and set their own up.
Leverage, like business, is all about thinking creatively. If you haven’t got the money to pay someone to do a tasks try re-framing the task as a learning opportunity for someone or a trade off where you will do something for them in return.
I spend virtually no time on the mundae task associated with my online business but I have also learned that is doesn’t cost much to get other people to do a lot of the work for me. I give value in return instead of money, then people use this value to create even more wealth for themselves.

Hey Rich,
Leverage, let’s see
#1 Something no one ever talks about when creating an online business is funding, I need help in having leverage in finding small business financing for inventory costs, where and how do you get the leverage to get start-up financing, and be able to convince lending institutions that you need this and can pay it back.
#2 finding products with good to great sell through rates in order to make good profits so as to outsource the bill paying, handyman repairs, and by the way I am good at doing my own home repairs, but don’t have the time as I am trying to build my business up to have the extra income to outsource.
#3 Not that I doubt that list building is very important, but you just don’t live in an apartment one day and build a list and then live in a million dollar home the next week. I must be missing something on this one and everyone does not have access to Govenors, Mayors or Hollywood or Sports celebs. I must be really missing the key ingredient here and maybe will find out about it on the 23rd. during your teleseminar. Help, Please Help, where is the missing link here? Let me know Rich and Tellman you guys really make it sound all so simple.
More over simplist dribble with no substance. Common sense concepts that any adult should have a grasp of without a great deal of thinking.
I am always amazed at the remarks on this blog and even more amazed at the things you write about that are supposed to be some sort of revelation handed down by God. I have definetely engaged in very different survival training in the course of my life than the people who read and then post comments to this blog This is another wasted Molden moment.
Methinks you are ever the ( frustrated ) cynic Ralph.
Your thoughts are quite direct and perhaps delivered a little too harshly. Were you having a bad day when you penned this reply.
I’m as cynical as you my friend, but …. sometimes constructive criticism would be valuable.
You remind me of those god-awful Move Critics. None of them can ( or would ) ever produce or make a movie, but, they are happy to share their wisdom-from-above on all movies that come across their view.
So, the solution would be to offer some of your thoughts that would assist rather than offering your own “dribble”.
I agree with you - to leverage is NOT as easy as a few words on a blog. However smart Rich may be, we cant all make heaps of $$$ just because he says we can.
Its a bit like saying “: everyone can run the 100 meters in 10 seconds”. Not gonna happen, no matter how many levers you have.
Sorry bout the cynical view Rich .. BUT, after a while one gets a bit tired from all the “advice” that will supposedly gain you a gazillion dollars with the click of a mouse.
Am I as frustrated as Ralph … youbetcha.
Would be nice if you could write some tips and advice to people like me who have NO idea about blogs and websites. Now, before you get too excited and give me the Set Up Your Own Blog in 3 Easy Steps routine, pls note that ALL the blog websites say that. And no, i cannot figure em out.
1.. perhaps im a bit stupid and need to find another way to make money other than the internet.
2.. perhaps it really is difficult and people like me just GIVE UP.
Now there’s a challenge, help those of us who are at a total loss on the internet. At the moment you are preaching to the converted.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
regards, david.
Good work you fellows never fail to keep
giving new information and help Thank You
As an artist, inventor and creative business consultant, I find that the first steps of an idea or venture need to be taken by me or a venture group; reasonably perfected and then expanded through collaboration with experts and consultants.
The lever comes when feedback supports the venture and opportunity is acted upon.
Success comes when you attune to someone like Rich on a higher level and apply the success tools.(changing the fulcrum)
Thanks so much Rich for your generous sharing
Rex
Hi Rich,
Like everybody else I also like your article and made some more sense, I have heard and read about leverage concept many times before, but this time it was different so here are my 3 points.
1. I do not want to be pushed around by circumstances of life and many of them are really small, so that I throw a couple of grand they will be gone. To bring my online business to $2000/m.
2. More time with family, Being able to give more quality time to my wife and son and both of our parents.
3. To be able to support couple of people who are not as fourtunate as me.
Thanks
Vijay
Hi Rich,
There is 2 primary areas that I need leverage.
1. Is in the marketing and JV area. I have created my product and services mind maps, created an outline for each of the above in word format so that I can develop them, and started development on 1 of the software components.
2. In streamlining my processes to help me fully optimize this startup for success.
Now I need YOU to help me by allowing me to use you as leverage to get the products and services out there. We would possily pull in multiple JV parters products into this. This is a very large niche, with what I think is a big upside.
Thanks in advance
Ken
Rich,
There are many different ways that I’ve been looking at using leverage. Currently I’m looking at hiring someone to come in and do a lot of the household chore (dishes, laundry, etc) to save the time that that usually takes out of my week (which is several hours). I’m still working on getting my business off the ground myself and am still working a day job. That in addition to kids and my S.O. means I typically have very little free time. I try to always look for ways to leverage others to free up more time for myself so that I can put more consistent time towards my business.
Ps. Thank you for all of your great manifestos!
Hi Rich,
I posted something similar to this yesterday on my page. The thing is, there’s only so much leveraging the average beginner can afford. Besides just leveraging, you also have to get value for your efforts. Thank you for the awesome posts!
Cheers,
Rafael
You got that right Rich…
I believe leverage is very important too. Being new to IM, I have alot of information crammed in my head as we speak, but I am looking to increase my leverage as time goes on. Once I get going, I look forward to start outsourcing and finding JV relationships in order to increase my leverage and get my name out there. Keep the good stuff coming Rich!
Can we be reminded enough of the basics? Over and over and over again. Hit us over the head with them. We love to make things so much harder than they really are.
If we just do the basics - like using leverage - success comes as a matter of course.
You are right on target, Rich!
My three areas:
1. Finances - bookkeeping and beyond
I don’t need to be the person who pays the bills anymore, enters data into QuickBooks, or reconciles bank and credit card statements. Someone else can do that and simply provide reports that I use. And I can keep my eye on a few indicators to make sure we are safe cash-flow wise.
2. Ideas to grow our business
The entire business doesn’t have to come out of my head. I have lots of good people working for me - I can trust them to come up with great ideas and then implement them successfully.
3. Managing the team
I don’t have to be involved in every issue anymore. I can trust my team to do the right thing, and leave day-to-day management to my team manager.
This was a great exercise - thanks, Rich! Interesting how for me it all comes down to trust. Being able to let go of things that are holding me back and trust that others will be able to handle them.
Your information is so true. I am working on leveraging my time and all my tasks right now. Thanks for reminding me to stay on task and contiue to leverage the stuff that will free up my time for more money making projects.
Jayson Hunter
Here is my list…
1. Product creation
2. Content creation
3. Project management

You are absolutely correct Rich when you stated that the one thing that most successful business owners have in common is leverage.
I actually found this out about 4 years ago and I would not be where I am now without it.
The whole term “self-made millionaire”, in my opinion, needs to be thrown in the garbage!
There is no such thing as a self made millionaire because somewhere in an entrepreneur’s journey towards success, he or she had to leverage someone or something to get to where they are at now.
Rich,
I just wanted to say that I’ve been on your list for quite a while now and you don’t cease to impress me with the depth of your insights, reports, blog posts and teleseminars.
Thank you so much for being such a giver!
Warm Regards
Fabio
Hey Rich:
I must say that being new to the internet market and checking out the things that you share is simply amazing.
Leaverage is something that I heard about but never thought of as far as business goes. But I am going to apply what little I learned for you blog and looking to do much better financially.
