Just Because You Can, Doesn’t Mean You Should

There’s a weird theory in Internet Marketing space.

It goes something like this…. If you’re going to run an online business, you need to know how to do every single thing in Internet Marketing yourself.

And I do mean everything…

  • Designing and maintaining your website
  • Writing all your own blogs
  • Filming your own videos
  • Uploading those videos to YouTube, Facebook etc.
  • Running your own social media
  • Creating all your own information
  • Writing all your own copy
  • Recording and uploading your own podcasts.
  • Running your own traffic to your website
  • Creating your own keynote presentations.
  • Writing all your own emails to your list

I’m always surprised to hear that regular people believe they need to know how to do all these things.

More importantly, they believe their business cannot be successful until they personally learn how to do everything I mentioned above (and keep in mind this is just a partial list here).

If you find yourself constantly running in circles, trying to do all these things, then you’ll want to hear the strategy that I’m going to reveal here. First I want to put this in perspective for you…

The Real World Doesn’t Work Like This

If you were going to launch a business in the real world, you wouldn’t bother to learn how to do everything yourself.

For example, let’s say you’re a baker and you wanted to open your own bakery. One of the first things you would need is a sign for your bakery.

Now would you stop what you’re doing and spend a month (or more) learning how to make a sign for your business?

Of course not. You would hire someone to design you a sign.

Same thing with accounting. Any self-respecting businessperson knows you need to keep the books for accounting purposes.

If you’re not already an accountant, you are not likely to try to run the books yourself. You would hire a bookkeeper to do it for you.

And if you DO know how to create a sign for your business or keep the books, that doesn’t mean you necessarily should… with so many other important tasks demanding your attention in order to simply grow and maintain your business.

Let me be the first to say: It’s the exact same situation if you own an online business. There are plenty of nuts and bolts tasks that have to be done… everything from managing your website traffic to writing blogs.

Just because you know how to do these things, doesn’t mean you necessarily should.

Focus on What’s Important and You’ll Profit

As an online business owner, it’s even more critical for you to focus on the specific things you need to do to grow your business.

With so many distractions in the Internet Marketing space, it’s easier to be focused on the shiny objects like the latest tactic to get traffic or the most convincing way to write a blogs.

But as an online entrepreneur, you should really be focused on two key elements:

  1. Sales
  2. Marketing

Without customers and on-going sales, you won’t have a scalable business. Without marketing, you won’t have a chance of selling in the first place. This is the difference between working on your business instead of “in” your business.

Now of course, podcasts, blogs, copy, emails, videos etc. can all be construed as marketing. And they’re all important.

I personally handle these things in my own business. But all I do is the core content that feeds into all these Internet Marketing assets. Then I have a team behind me who create the videos… upload the videos… write the blogs… syndicate the content etc. Now of course, I could do all this myself.

The better use of my time is creating the content (which takes me anywhere from a couple minutes to a couple hours), and then my team turns it into:

  • Blogs
  • Podcasts
  • YouTube Videos
  • Magazine articles
  • Traffic to my site

That’s how I can create value in my own business, so I can then focus on what’s really important – how to drive sales and grow my business.

Even if you don’t have the cash to create your own team for your business, you can still copy my strategy.

You can outsource these tasks so you’re not as involved in the day-to-day grind of running your own online business.

If you’re just starting out, start small.

Start with a single task you can help move your business forward.Find an outsourcer to help you with that task. Once it’s done, re-invest the profits from that task into your overall business.

Remember: Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. Keep that in mind every time you add yet another task to your To-Do list.

    Brilliant advice – OK I do have a vested interest as a provider of some of the services mentioned. I am a fan of initially doing things so that you can better manage the hand-over to others, but not if it means putting sub-standard reputation-busting material out there. That’s often emphasised when it comes to online material as it’s virtually impossible to be certain that you have completely removed an item as copies are cached. But I always wonder why people think that it’s any different offline: once seen, a bad impression may be best forgotten, but rarely is.

    Thanks Pete for a timely reminder.

    I’m not sure were the hesitation to outsource comes from, but it’s probably starts with the inability to accurately define the end result required.

    Without a clear end result in mind it becomes difficult to work backwards and define the exact tasks that need to be outsourced.

I’ve been using a Philippines based outsourcing team sourced via http://www.istaffsource.com for quite sometime now. They do all the things I can’t do and more… they also manage the staff for me! I highly recommend them!

    We’ve all felt the frustration of knowing that we cannot do something competently. Your message reminds us that we must find those who are competent in our business needs. A future session could be how to find skilled and responsible contractors. This has been my downfall, and it seems other budding webprenures share my frustration. But thanks for a great blog.
