Hey everybody–Rich here, and that’s a question I was asked recently by CNN…
Take a look for yourself:
Check out the CNN article here
In the Small Business section of CNNMoney.com, they profiled a furniture store in Virginia that wanted to be more competitive in the marketplace.
So they contacted me to have a look around their website. And man, the things I found…
I’m going to highlight a few of them here, followed by some changes I would suggest and how you can immediately add more selling power to your own website:
Problem: They’ve made it extremely hard for prospects to find what they’re looking for.
Solution: Step inside your prospect’s shoes and walk around the website in their frame of mind. Are you finding what you want? Or are your frustrated beyond belief? Then make the appropriate changes.
How You Can Benefit: This problem is a plague upon internet businesses everywhere. So many businesses fail because people can’t find what they REALLY want on their website.
The key here is to make it as easy as possible. Have all of your “hottest buttons” front and center. Make your best offers in plain sight. Don’t make your prospect work for it, because they won’t. They’ll just go to your competitor’s website, which is easier to navigate.
Problem: They were losing traffic due to not taking advantage of misspelled search engine inquiries.
Solution: Adding the misspellings to the meta tags could increase their traffic by 20% or more.
How You Can Benefit: Here’s one I see a lot, yet few take advantage of it. If your URL or product is something that’s misspelled frequently, make sure you do some keyword research and see how many searches are actually entered incorrectly.
You’ll be surprised at what you find. There could be hundreds–or even thousands–of people looking for you. But if they get one letter wrong, they’ll never get to your site.
That’s why it’s important to include ANY and ALL spellings in your meta tags. By doing this, you’ll substantially increase your chances of being found by those who are “grammatically challenged”.
Problem: There’s a page inside advertising their interior design services, but nothing to show us their talents in this area.
Solution: Show us your work–don’t just tell us–with some before and after photos. Or better yet, some video.
How You Can Benefit: This is CRUCIAL to any service provider. In order to highlight your skills. you must show your prospects what you’ve done in the past. That’s why testimonials are so important to your business.
And don’t just throw anything up there. Make sure they’re GOOD. Talk about how you’ve changed their lives, made them more money, gave them a better future, etc (much like the before/after photos I suggested above).
And here’s a tip: write the testimonial FOR them. Word it exactly the way you want to, then simply ask for an approval. It’s fast, easy, and most of the time you’ll get exactly what you want.
Problem: The first hour of interior decorating consultation was free, but they had this perk buried at the bottom of an inside page.
Solution: Put your strongest selling points front and center on the top of the page or even on the main page.
How You Can Benefit: HELLO! Major selling point alert! If you have something that offers value and separates your product or service from the rest, make sure your visitors know about it.
And don’t just mention it in passing–put it in plain sight on your main page. These are the types of things that can swing a decision your way instead of your competitors’. So take advantage of it!
That’s just a few of the suggestions I made. There’s lots more great tips and insights in the article, so make sure you take a look:

In the meantime, give your website the once over this week. Take a closer look at the offers…the copy…the design…the meta tags…anything that could be improved.
You might be surprised at the money you’re leaving on the table…money that can easily be yours with only a few easy tweaks.
To Higher Profits,
Rich
P.S. What about you? Did you see anything else they could improve on?

Let me know in the comments below. I know all of you have very sharp “marketing radar” and I’d love to see if there was anything I missed.
So make sure you give it a once over and let me know what you find!

Great tips… I guess some of us could make a bit of money on the side by consulting to local business this way? Just an idea. :)
Take care!
Great information Rich! Simple changes can make a world of difference I see. I will apply this in my work later on. ;) Keep up the great work.

Great piece of information.
I’m really looking to make some changes and it seems like I’ve found your post at the right time. I’ve learnt few important things and I’m going to implement them now.
Thanks a lot!
Great article and congrats on your CNN exposure!
Question:
Placing possible misspellings in the meta tag – alone?
For a low competition kw(as noted in the cnn article), would that carry enough weight to make a difference and pull their site to the top should the searcher not take advantage of Google’s spelling correction feature?
Take care.
Their website isn’t really attractive. Plus I would put the otpin form at the top of the sidebar, instead of the bottom.
I’d start split testing as well.

folks, please pay attention & READ on….
i have been on-line website marketing consultant for a lot longer than Rich,
himself…since the infancy of AOL, and your Rich (about 12 years ago)was
nowhere near on-line himself….he was working in a retail brick & mortar
clothing store offline in NYC at that time….and i am on-line from that time.
Anyway…this is taking nothing away from my friend, Rich….in fact, i have
been on Rich’s many lists from almost the day he started them about
8 or 9 years ago, or less. Rich is better at website tweaking than i am.
I am better at actually driving a lot of traffic to any websites, over the years.
This miller house website is not perfect, but, is passable…all it needs
right now is drive a lot of traffic to it…try ezine solo ads. sincerely…John, Day.
Hi John,
You’re right. Nothing beats traffic to a website but doesn’t it make sense to get the website to convert before sending traffic to it?
I think Rich had some valid points about scooping up some of the free traffic available with tweaking the site and I’m betting that traffic had more commercial intent anyway.
Shane
good
Thanks, Rich. I am going to apply your insights on my own website. I am going to go over each page, get my keywords right, get my description right, and make sure each page is focused on what my description reads.
Congrats on the CNN exposure!
Hi Rich
There seems to be some confusion at The Miller House. Their home page core message is that they offer antique reproduction furniture and decorative furnishings but what’s with the pages on Cheeseball Mixes and Dips & Soups…. and then there’s sleepwear?
I think they should reconsider what business they are actually going to be in to start with…. from there they could revisit their brand and its message because it’s a foundation stone of the creative process and now would be an opportune time to review it.
Their brand is the image of their business and that image needs to be conveyed consistently throughout their website and all of their marketing materials both online and offline. I am not sure where the pineapple logo fits in?
They have no engaging headline on the home page and no sense of happy customers from using either text or graphics…. the copy is too much about The Miller House rather than the benefits of buying from The Miller House…. there should be an optin spot on every page because they don’t know where there visitors will land… let alone some serious work on dedicated SEO for each page
Sometimes Less is More so if they don’t have the time to be more creative with their Events page it’s better to get rid of it rather than have its current message of “we are having another sale”….. and if they don’t have a commission deal from all of the furniture designers on the Links to Furniture Designers page then maybe it should go too or not be a dedicated page… why have a whole page focused on taking visitors away from their site?
cheers
Warren
I’m just starting my online catalog site selling airbrush makeup and I have yet to make my first sale. Not to panic though because I know I can apply these ideas to my business too. So much work to do, but I got some great ideas from this.
Thanks for continuing to put out great content!

I am very much into what Rich says, and I love his free content.
One thing that nobody mentioned it though was that the website must be refreshed every now and then. That attracts the search engines, especially if it is monitored by metrics tracking engines, as is Analytics of the big G :))
A wonderful issue is that related to relevance that Rich mentioned (for being the best in your category), and also the uniqueness, too.
What about simplicity, too ??
This is what I try to do with my website, by the way, too.
Just a …
Rich,
Great information and tips.
At your suggestion I visited the site today. If I had not gone there to review it, I would have closed the page shortly after opening it.
Why do business owners ask questions like “I would like some input on my updated Web site”, if they don’t followup with some action to make changes and improve their site?
The owners have done nothing to improve the appearance, image, features, and navigation of the website. On the links page, the first 2 links go to to the same place, third link is a 404 Error Page, the next 2 links to other home pages, and the last link “Custom Web Design” is to a template website with no content.

Nice, content-rich post, good article! I thought meta keywords aren’t relevant to Google anymore, so I never bothered to mess with those and still get results. Congrats on the CNN thing!
