I hope you had a great weekend, a great Valentine’s Day and (for those in the U.S.) a great President’s Day.
I sure did. In fact, Debi and I celebrated our nine year wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day.
We were the last couple to ever tie the knot on top of The World Trade Center on Valentine’s Day. We got married February 14, 2001.
So, needless to say… we partied like rock stars all weekend.
Then on Monday, Ava and Elle had off from school – so we all had fun taking a day off.
Now, it’s time to get back to work. So I am back at my beach office ready to take our conversation about credibility, believability and proof much further.
The sun has just risen.
Here’s the view from my beach office this morning…

Beautiful. Alright let’s get to it…
So far we’ve covered 10 methods you can employ.
In our first post (you can read it by clicking here), we covered:
In our second post (you can read it by clicking here), we covered:
Alright, let’s add two more today to your arsenal.
We’ll start with…

Innovation & Being On The Cutting Edge
What It Is: Introduce new methods, technologies, or insights to your market increases your stature. Do it consistently… the credibility and believability of your expertise shines for everyone to see.
You can do this by:
Why It’s Powerful: One of the most common questions we ask friends, peers and family members when we connect is “What’s new?” Because in any area we care about we want to stay up to date.
So, when you or your company can serve as the primary source of “what’s new” for your prospects and clients… you deliver value in a way that builds greater belief and credibility in your expertise.
Example: I’ve used this approach so many times – it’s impossible for me to list them all here. But here are a few examples (from this blog) to stimulate your thinking…
1 – First to stream from a live seminar – February 10, 2007 – Here’s the blog post – LIVE Streaming Video Discussion Thread
2 – First in our marketplace to cover our conference with continual video updates (of each speaker) on our blog – From February 24-29, 2008 – Here are the blog posts:
3 – First to introduce and recommend Twitter to our marketplace – March 7, 2008 – Here’s the blog post - How To Instantly Transform Your Cell Phone Into A Eavesdropping Device That Picks Up The Most Profitable Information Online Today
4 – First to alert the market that (marketplace) attention was going to be the scarcest commodity in marketing – In The Attention Age Doctrine 1 (off the market) and The Attention Age Doctrine 2 (still available). Here are the blog posts:
How To Do It: All trends develop from the fringe. The trick is to identify listening posts that key you in to what’s up.
I have a folder in my bookmarks bar to save any sites I come across that serve as predictors of what’s to come. Here’s some of the types of pages that are saved in my folder:
So, start today. Just place a folder on your bookmarks bar titled “Trends.” Then whenever you come across any page you believe can provide you with the future insight to lead your marketplace, bookmark it and place it in that folder.
Then once a month make sure to check in with those pages and see if you can pick up on any trends gaining momentum that your marketplace needs to know about.

Leveraging Research & Studies
What It Is: There’s no doubt about it…We live in the information age. The internet places in your hands the best tool to track down juicy research you can use to increase your credibility.
For example with a little sleuthing on your part – you can easily find research that proves:
Why It’s Powerful: By providing research to support the problems you solve, the solutions you offer, and the difference you can make… you make it easier for your prospects and clients to believe in you, your company, and the solutions you provide.
Example: Here are two examples from the upcoming webinar I’ve been working on.
This first one is from a study done by SCORE and U.S. Bank. As you can see it helps prove the need for services like mine – teaching entrepreneurs how to build and grow their businesses…

This second slide is from a study done by Dunn & Bradstreet. This one helps identify a problem my prospects might suffer from. And once again it helps support the need for my programs and services…

How To Do It: You’ve basically got two choices. Either do the research yourself, or hire a researcher to find the information for you.
If you decide to do the research yourself – the first places I would look are question and answer sites. In fact – if my memory serves me correctly I found both of the above studies on Google Answers. Another site to definitely check out is Yahoo Answers too. Search both of these sites to see if someone else has already paid researchers to find the answers you want.
If you decide to hire someone else to do the research for you – think about hiring a librarian. Of course, the freelance sites like elance can be helpful too just make sure you’re hiring a proficient researcher to ferret out the information that would be helpful to you.
Either way… think about the problems you solve and the solutions you provide. Then point your own research or your researcher in that direction.
O.K., that will wrap up today’s post.
It’s always a challenge to get back in the groove – so I wanted to ease back into our series today (especially with the weekend I had).
Of course, we’ve got lots more to cover – and we’ll do that tomorrow.
But before you go…
Remember to Re-tweet This!
And tell me…
What ideas, takeaways, or approaches did this post stimulate for you?
See you tomorrow at 10 am sharp.
To higher profits and beyond,
Rich Schefren

Let’s see, what do I take away? How about don’t be afraid to try new technologies, to make an impact. Seriously, I think the point is that there is no “one best way,” to establish credibility and “brand.” It depends on what you feel comfortable doing, and fits your style. I got started in Usenet Newsgroups in 1996, and discovered that being fake is hard work. I saw so many that tried to be other than what they were, and couldn’t keep it up. Children masquerading as adults, dimwits posing as intellligent people, and none could do it for long.
To me, it’s the same way in marketing. You cannot fool people for long. If you start out doing it, eventually the see through it. All the whining about “Google doesn’t like my . . .,” “The FTC cut off all my testimonials,” etc., is mostly people that failed to be honest from the start. Honesty, to me, is the best way to build credibility. Asking yourself. “Would my (favorite relative) consider this honest? Could they click on this and feel safe?” To me, many businesses fail because they look for the easy money. Not necessarily get rich quick, but get rich fast.
Anyone with actual experience knows that getting rich any other way than slowly, with hard work, is going to edge into being dishonest. Like so many things, you can’t be a little bit dishonest. If you forget that anyone you deal with has to make money too, you are going to have problems. Google is in business to make information available to the searcher. They are not there to make money for the advertiser, except as a side benefit.
Me too sites don’t benefit anyone but the original site owner, and then only until people get wise to them. Sites that present clear benefits to all, and are honest about what they offer, establish lasting credibility. That results in trust, and buyers wanting to give them money.
The lasting benfit that people should get from your posts is that trust doesn’t happen quickly. It is built over time, from associating with trustworthy people.
i agree walter – the truth will always be found out… that’s why operating in the right niche… where you build credibility over time is so crucial.
Rich,
Glad you had a great weekend. My wife and I had a little weekend getaway too – good to recharge.
Love the sunshine picture – beautiful
In the Missing Chapter, you talk about not using lack of cash as an excuse not to outsource.
Your post today triggered a great idea.
If you decide to hire someone else to do the research for you – think about hiring a librarian.”
I have a friend who is looking for work, has a degree in Library Science, AND is in my target demographic.
PLUS “I could have had a V-8 too”
Seriously, I just about slapped myself in the head for not thinking of it sooner.
He’s a perfect guy to help me build background info and support for my concept and I bet he’ll do it for almost nothing.
I will be contacting him today.
I also did not know about Google Answers and Yahoo Answers.
thanks again for the great ideas in this series of posts.
Just curious, posting seems to be down a bit – is traffic down too or was writing a poem too much?
Also retweeted the post already.
the poem didn’t resonate as much as i would have liked…
but those are the breaks kerry.
also, in the beginning of this little experiment i’m doing we were emailing to our list that we had updated the blog… we didn’t do that for the past few posts – and going forward we’ll probably mix it up. my goal is to build organic traffic to the blog (more pull than push) so i’m not always going to mail for the post.
glad to hear you’ll be using a friend who has got the chops and looking for work – it’s great when that can happen.
Rich,
I loved google answers. its ashame they dont answer questions anymore. i found a gem of an old ad John Peterman ran many years before he started his J. Peterman catalog.
I was just reading again Hopkins. and his Van Camps example. How his extensive research of the market and what it meant allowed him to tell the facts no one has ever told. and he created proof by announcing the fact van camps supplied restaurants and lunch counters. and then gave an exact number of those places exactly how many men.
Will definately have to leverage research. Thanks again.
yeah – i was disappointed when they decided to close google answers too.
the good news is there are plenty of other sites out there – but when you are looking to see if anyone has already done the research, choose the busiest sites to search.
The last 3 posts have definitely stimulated some serious brainstorming. Credibility and proof is one of the BIGGEST obstacles I need to overcome and I could think of at least one way to use every suggestion you’ve offered.
When it comes to the research, that’s an area I always seem to struggle with. I never know where to go to find the info I’m looking for and given my lack of ability, I know it would be a good thing to outsource. Only problem is I’m not always sure what instructions to give someone to help them gather the info quickly and efficiently.
What direction or advice would you give on either improving my own research skills (although I’m not sure I want another reason why I’m my biggest bottleneck) or providing instructions to an outsourced resource?
Another somewhat unrelated question, when you write these blog posts and even your killer reports, how much of them do you actually write? For example, you’re writing these posts on with pen and paper. Do you then hand off your chicken scratching to a resource to post online or do you then come back and do it yourself?
For your reports, do you write those with pen and paper and then hand off when appropriate? Do you write it electronically? Or do you have a writer that you work with that can organize and convey your thoughts quicker than you can?
Again, thanks for all the insights and killer info! I always check your blog for new thought provoking ideas so please keep it up!
glad to hear these past few posts have stimulated lots of ideas for you chestin.
as far as researching goes – the first really important step is to get clear what you are looking for – in the cases of these slides i was looking for research that discussed the biggest reasons for business failure.
i’ve also had research done on some of the biggest frustrations that entrepreneurs vent about, and research that proves the benefits of coaching for an entrepreneur.
the trick is to figure out what you’d want – what would be the ideal piece of research – what would the ideal study say – and then ask your researcher to find things that get as close to it as possible.
to your unrelated questions (smile) – when it comes to my blog post or my reports I write them from beginning to end. most of the time i write them on paper – usually janine types them in for me – but sometimes i do that myself if i don’t want to wait or i want to do some heavy editing while i type it in.
i would like a writer to work with – but so far i’ve tried a few times and i haven’t been happy with the results – so for now it’s all me. but i haven’t given up on the idea… just not actively pursuing it right now.
thanks for the comment and compliments – and i enjoy having you as a reader (and commenter)!
Hey Rich, (loving this series in general, and especially the proof posts)
Big Takeaway – the bookmarking and trendspotting strategies to stay on the cutting edge of what’s developing in the marketplace.
For the research part, i guess my interest is more on past scientific research related to personal productivity and time management (my niche)
Thanks man,
Nahyan
nahyan – you can find so many great studies about productivity – you’ve really got it easy – if you’re not sure… just ask in a future post…

thanks for continuing to comment – it’s a shame more people don’t.
Many years ago I learned a few lessons about how important it was for me to pay attention to trends in both computer hardware advances and software development and how they are related. By paying attention to how fast these areas keep evolving I was able to make better decisions.
One of the takeaways from today was how I can better leverage research on the Internet to augment my marketing message and better connect with the real challenges being faced by my prospects. I will be incorporating more of this.
I just got back from a very useful Internet business meeting where the topic this evening was ‘Master Minds’ and one of the examples illustrated using http://www.mindmeister.com/ for real-time updating of mind maps from participants from all over the world during a master mind session. Really powerful. I will be using this. I can also see how I can use mind maps in conjunction with online research as well.
– Thanks.
like the idea of real-time updating of mindmaps for brainstorming… i’ve participated in activities like this and they tend to work very well.
thanks roger – thanks for your comment and good luck
Hi Rich,
My takeaway for today has got to be the monitoring of trends and demonstrating innovation in your market. Still working on the web page. Getting the virtual prototypes together is slowing me down… Getting up to speed with the software is the problem but it won’t take me too long! This is going to be my innovation strategy. If I can get designs on the site and get feedback before tooling up then I can react to trends quickly and cost effectively. Rapid prototyping is the way forward for me.
I’m providing a service at the moment rather than products. I think you were saying in one of your tele-seminars that products are born from what you learn from providing a service. At some point I’ll be making that transition.
Thanks for another revealing post. I’m taking notes and applying this as quick as I can. Definitely worth tuning into! Brilliant stuff!
Regards,
Carl
