Have you made up your mind yet?
Do you know who you’ll be voting for in the upcoming presidential election?
Well, whether you’ve already made up your mind, or you haven’t… I want you to choose who you would vote for and who you wouldn’t (if the election were today and you had to choose).
But wait, because before you cast your imaginary vote – I want you to remove politics from your decision. Instead of thinking about the candidates’ positions on issues that are important to you – think about the candidates as people, just normal human-beings like you and I.
You see, Presidential elections can be an extremely valuable gift for entrepreneurs in the Attention Age.
While I can’t go into details right now, what I can tell you is that I actually work with one of the major political parties. And from an insider’s perspective I can assure you that a tremendous amount of research, thought, and analysis goes into each of the candidates’personas. In fact, for many voters, the issues take a back seat.
Hard to believe? Maybe, but let me share with you the findings from a somewhat dated yet still relevant article titled:Beauty or the Beast? The Effects of Appearance, Personality, And Issue Information on Evaluation of Political Candidates, from the journal - Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
In the article two different studies were used to determine what impact physical appearance and personality had on voters.
The results showed:
- Physical appearance influenced voting even when personality information was provided.
- Voters were less influenced by their agreement with candidates’ positions on issues when image or personality information were provided than when they weren’t.
Now, since we are dealing with real, living people, as opposed to fictional characters only so much tweaking can be done. But nonetheless, you can bet that what is coming across isn’t by happenstance. Instead, they are cleverly crafted personas designed to resonate with the voting public.
So, have a go at it. Take a moment right now to describe what you believe is the dominant personality trait of the candidates.
| Democrats | Dominant Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| Hillary Clinton | _____________________ |
| Barack Obama | _____________________ |
| John Edwards | _____________________ |
On the other side of the aisle:
| Republicans | Dominant Personality Trait |
|---|---|
| John McCain | _____________________ |
| Mitt Romney | _____________________ |
| Rudy Giuliani | _____________________ |
| Mike Huckabee | _____________________ |
What you’ve just done is evaluated the performance of how these politicians come across. You actually do it all the time, each and every time you hear and watch them speak. The only difference is this time you are doing it consciously.
That’s important because now I want you to do the very same analysis on yourself. Evaluate your own performance on how well you come across.
Do you come across (in email, on the phone, in person, etc…) as:
- Disciplined or Lazy
- Reliable or Flaky
- Egotistical or Timid
- Trustworthy or Dishonest
- Ambitious or Laid-back
- An Expert or An Average Joe
- A Trusted Advisor or An Aggressive Salesperson
You see, even though you’re not running for office – people vote for you or against you each and everyday.
And while you can’t know how well you are doing by looking at the polls. You can witness the results in:
- the emails that get opened and the ones that go straight to the delete folder
- the sites that are visited versus the many that are ignored
- the blogs that get read versus the ones that are hardly visited
- the products that achieve best seller status versus the ones that bomb
So, when you look at your own results are you a front-runner? Or are you currently trailing?
Either way, if you want to improve your business’ performance you can take a page from the politician’s play-book.
The first step is to figure out who makes up your base. These are your current buyers. What characteristics do they have? What type of personalities do you think resonate with them as a group? Why have they chosen you – what is it about you that originally appealed to them?
Second, think about your “swing voters”. For our purposes, these are your prospects. They’ve opted-in, so you’re on their radar screen. But they haven’t yet voted for you with their wallet.
Think about how this group might be different from your base. And more importantly how you can reach out to them in a way that doesn’t turn off your current customers.
Next, figure out all the different ways people vote for you.
My list might include:
- open my emails
- read my blog
- consider my product recommendations
- purchase my own products
- attend my seminars
- etc….
For your final step, start thinking about how you would need to come across to win a greater share of the vote. How do you need to come across to win your own personal election.
Are you currently interacting, working, managing, communicating in a way to get more and more of your marketplace, your team, and your partners to vote for you?
No matter how good you currently are – I guarantee if you look closely enough you’ll find at least 2 shifts you could make to your current style.
Now, just for the record – I am not suggesting you pretend you’re something your not or that you have no interest in becoming. That would be dishonest, and the odds are you’ll be found out eventually.
But, as a sidenote: pretending you are already a person who is “(insert your goal here)” is one of the fastest ways to become the person you want to be. In fact, whenever I embark on a new goal, I always clearly define for myself how a person who already achieved the goal would be. Then I do my very best to alter my behavior.
So there you have it. If you’ve been following along you’ve no doubt picked up a few pointers on how you could better come across.
Plus, the next time you watch any of the political candidates try to take an objective view on how the candidate is attempting to come across. If you do, you can turn the entire election process into a valuable lesson on improving your business.
To higher profits,
Rich schefren
PS - I am saddened knowing that many of you who read this will not take the few short minutes an exercise like this requires.I suggest that if you’re the type of person who enjoys reading, but never actually goes to the next step of actually applying (which is where the real improvements come from). Why not decide to change that about yourself starting right now. And go through the exercise above as if (pretending) you were someone who always did the suggested exercises and extracted the valuable lesson.
PPS – If you came up with any interesting observations or realizations, why not share them with the rest of us? Besides - I am always interested in what my base and swing voters have to say

Hi Rich,
- I can’t make comment on candidates as I a not USA based (and don’t know all the candidates)
Another Busy post
I do know they are using social media (myspace) to extend reach, so theirs a move forward…..
I know in my own case- how I was perceived in a recent email was very obvious.
Here is what happened: I was running late and fired an email to my list about one of my products, normally a few sales made….
No sales…..
I reflected on the email, realised I looked desperate and rushed
Previous emails and blog posts showed me as the expert in my area of SEO and specifically- link building for top rankings.
(all my sites are top 10 in Google)

Interesting…pondering…
I wear a couple of different hats. On my listed URL I am known as GG (short of Gossip Girl). The whole blog project started as a joke but what was interesting about it was that the townsfolk saw a different side of me that I had not revealed before.
As a result, I was soon asked to run for mayor–albeit honorary. Granted it was an “honest race” where politicians are bought–with quarters.
Anyway, what was conveyed from that experience was that I did not project my whole self to those who knew me in passing. The writing I did for the little gossip rag showed my humor and another side of me they were not aware of–and that I was not aware that I hide.
My other persona is that of a consummate professional–I am featured in the media and am an acknowledged expert in my field.
Today, I attempt to blend and balance and what this means to my readers is that I try to involve them more, answer them, and let them see the hidden underbelly.
personally I am probably going to vote for John McCain because he has shown real integrity and worked for open government and fairness his whole life.
The idea of having to change yourself for business that may affect your personal life is not in my favor, and I would go with my own personality that would naturally develop.
However, I believe genuine intentions will work with your own personality in most cases; since it will show in the material you put out, which is of sincere quality and one which has intentions to help at least as much as your intention to make a profit (personally, I would have more intention to help, and the price will be justified in a way where the customer would feel that he is giving you the deserved amount).
Of course, marketing can be used to increased perceived value which may increase the actual perceived value after the customer has bought the product - and this is where I believe it is ethical to actually manipulate the prospects, because it only results in a better situation where they are more satisfied and fulfilled and you will be entitled to receive more in return.
That’s my take on it.

Rich,
Interesting post. After all the accusations about ” only listens to the polls” it’s interesting that it’s the perceived personality that sways voters. (For me, it’s how someone stands on the Fair Tax, but that’s a shameless plug!)
BUT after listening to the “maven” call today with you and Jay, it is obvious how much “perception” is a part of the purchase. Not only that call and this post, but your previous post about the guy who wouldn’t sell you a tire (he didn’t care how HIS personality came across, so he lost a long-time customer).
It’s always good for each of us to do an internal inventory. Dale Carnegie always taught the interesting contradiction that you come across as interestING by being interestED in the other person. So yes, we should pay attention to how our audience perceives us, if we want any attention at all.

Where’s Ron Paul???

Hey Rich,
great to see you blog again. It’s a great way to market your blog and create interesting posts by tying them in with news issues.
Also you get a lot of trackbacks from other blogs on the subject of the elections. Sometimes they can really drive a lot of traffic.
For those of you who want to learn marketing: study what Rich DOES!

Hi Rich,
Very interesting post. I went ahead and did the exercise and here is what I came up with:
Hillary Clinton __Regal / Entitled___
Barack Obama __Confident __
John Edwards __Light Hearted___
John McCain ___Condicending__
Mitt Romney ____Fake___
Rudy Giuliani ____Mean_____
Mike Huckabee ____Aloof_____
If you cant tell I am going for Obama and I agree with your statement that people vote on personality above all.
Good stuff, I am now subscribed via RSS.

Seriously Rich - What about Ron Paul? Why did you omit him? He’s got far more character than any other candidate on either side… and you left him out? I don’t want to call you Rich “Fox News” Schefren, but this definitely brought you a rinky-dink step closer.
I’d think you’d be more interested in Ron Paul than any other candidate running because of your status as the Guru’s Guru dude. Ron Paul has the people helping him, and his online marketing is head and shoulders and a few more miles above and better than EVERY other candidate combined.
Ron Paul has far and away the most passionate group of “followers”, he holds the record for the most donations (total dollar amount AND number of people who’ve donated - and amount donated in a single day), and I don’t see you having your own Rich Schefren App on Facebook! I don’t see a single article on your blog having close to the number of Diggs that articles on Ron Paul bring in. Don’t take this as an attack, but just that I am completely astounded by the oversight in omitting Ron Paul from this. It’s like you know practically everything, and now this? Dude, are feeling okay?
I really don’t know how a true maven like you could have an oversight of such magnitude. Anyway, I do hope that you are feeling okay, that the extra weight hasn’t affected you too much, and that you are doing something about it (just concerned because of the difference in your appearance over about a year).
And with the call issue tonight… I’m a little worried because the Internet would just NOT be the same without Rich Schefren. You’ve contributed a tremendous amount toward making people’s lives a lot better, business a lot better, and it really seems like you care - a LOT.
A LOT more about us than yourself, that is. Make sure you stick around in that body, eh? Don’t work yourself to death. I know you’re as close to Superman as possible in many people’s eyes, but bodies still need to be treated pretty well. Look at Jay. I used to work over 100 hours a week. Did it for nearly 3 years. I saw a picture of “me” and couldn’t believe it - I looked like the fat walking dead. Then I started eating better, and cut my hours down to 70-80 hours a week. HUGE difference. I lost 36 pounds doing nothing else (I’m not selling anything, okay?). PLEASE step up and take care of yourself. Please? If you haven’t already started?
I have to agree that Ron Paul should definitely be on the list. He’s gotten more votes than Giuliani in every single state besides New Hampshire (1% below Giuliani) and Florida. He also happens to have 100,000+ people in Meetup groups trying to get his message heard. He has truly mastered internet marketing in a political sense. He’s also raised 4.3 and 6+ million dollars on two different days, without his campaign ever being involved. That’s like if an internet marketer was to get $6 million in PROFIT on a single day on a product he’s been selling for a long time, without any advertising on his behalf.
I think this is a stupid site and this does absolutly nothing for my education.
