My last blog post was about the myth of retirement, and how it robs most people of the happiness they hope for. It really struck a nerve with many of my readers.
If you’ve been patiently waiting for my solution… your wait is over, the cavalry is charging ahead. And if your current situation seems hopeless, you’re in luck, because when we’re done you’ll have an answer that will definitely work for you.
How can I be so sure? Because what I am about to layout for you are the very same strategies guiding me and many of my famous clients.
But before we blitz down the trail together I need to point out a few of the more obvious signs along the way. You see, right now most people have a false sense of certainty about what they believe will be their likely future. Truth be told, most entrepreneurs’ envisioned future isn’t much different from an infant’s security blanket – they both don’t serve any real purpose other than providing a false sense of safety.
I know what I just wrote sounds cold, but think about it. Could you have predicted you current situation (good or bad) 5 years ago? How about 10 years ago? For anyone with even an ounce of ambition cycling through their veins the answer has to be “no.”
From what I gather, the single biggest reason for the gap between what we want and where we end up is perspective. Most people seem to be sleepwalking through life, with little awareness of where they are really heading and even less recognition for what’s going on around them.
So, before you can predict anything, you need to have a clue about the overall context – meaning the environment you currently operate in. You see, one of the biggest factors influencing your future will be how you interact with everything that’s going on around you. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
Of course it does. So, let me ask you a question…
“Have you noticed how everything around us is changing so fast these days?”
Think about it. Just compare where the world is today to where it was just a few years ago.
Today, the best selling rap artist is white (Eminem), the most successful golfer is black (Tiger Woods), the tallest basketball player in the NBA is Chinese (Yao Ming), the French have been accusing Americans of being condescending and not caring about the views of foreigners, we now pay for water (bottled water is $9 a gallon) while music is free (sort of), and you need 9 different phone numbers to reach any two of your friends. I could go on and on…
Don’t make the mistake that the business world is somehow immune from the snowball of rapid change. I first noticed how uncertain the future is in the business world after reading Tom Peters’ and Robert Waterman’s book In Search Of Excellence. Peters and Waterman celebrated “excellence in companies that broke the mold”… Years later, these same companies were no longer excellent and the only thing that these excellent companies broke was their ability to survive and thrive.
Celebrated business guru Jim Collins author of bestselling books Built To Last, and Good To Great hasn’t been immune from the hyper-speed of business change either. The companies he profiled in Built To Last, did indeed last, although they weren’t exactly built to emulate.
Over half of Jim’s “visionary companies” have slipped dramatically in performance and reputation since the book’s release. These companies’ visions could now be better categorized as blurry rather than guiding. And chances are good that if he were to rewrite the book today companies like Ford, Sony, Boeing, Nordstrom, Merck, Motorola, and Disney wouldn’t even make his runner’s up list.
Just in case you mistakenly believe I am taking a shot at either Collins or Peters, I’m not. I wouldn’t even dare. These two men rank among my top five business heroes. But the point is obvious nonetheless. With everything changing so fast these days our futures are lot less predictable then ever before.
That’s why it’s no longer safe to assume that your tomorrow will be like today or yesterday, no matter how excellent you’ve been or how long you’ve been around. Moreover, the further you go out into the future the more your vision resembles a fairy tale.
Now before you go any further please read the prior paragraph again. Because when you face up to the hard cold reality that you really cannot be too certain about your future, you realize sacrificing everything for it (the whole retirement idea) doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
Of course you and I both realize the future is going to come. And we all believe certain actions taken today will improve our future.
So how do we balance the two?
If we live completely for today we might find our future somewhat unforgiving and very unpleasant, yet if we live completely for the future we might find we sacrificed our best years for nothing more than a mirage. Either way you end up with a heap of regrets.
Let me remind you that what got us on this conversation in the first place was the scary fact that my masseuse “GP” had not taken a day off in over 180 days. But I never told you why…
When GP first told me about her grueling schedule I asked her when she made time for fun. Initially she tried to feed me some line about making time “here and there”. I would have challenged her on her answer but I could tell by her tone she honestly believed what she was telling me.
My experience coaching so many successful marketing gurus taught me not to challenge closely held beliefs head on. If you do all you meet up with is a lot of resistance, because one of the reasons these people are successful is they’re not easily swayed from their own positive self-affirming beliefs.
I used to come across this all the time when I was coaching. GP like many of my clients had already convinced herself that she actually did have fun. If I challenged her belief she would have gotten defensive and more committed to the belief.
Instead, I asked for the details (which by the way is always the best way to covertly challenge any belief). “Well, tell me, what do you like to do for fun?” I asked. “Lots of things” she replied. “Tell me some of them” I challenged. She thought for a minute or two, and then told me she “used” to have fun by going rollerblading, playing with her dogs, or going to the beach.
Sure, she had things that she “used to do” for fun – but when I pressed further by asking her to tell me some of the things she’s done recently for fun, within the past 4 months, she didn’t have any answers.
GP then admitted to me (and more importantly to herself) she really didn’t make time for fun. It’s sad yet I see it all the time. I got the feeling that GP was hiding. Life was passing her by so fast and she just kept her head down clinging to the certainty of work over the uncertainty of her achieving happiness.
And while this won’t be popular to write I’ll write it anyway because the more I live the more I am convinced of its truth.
And here it is…
Most People Consistently Choose Unhappiness Over Uncertainty.
I know you want to disagree with that statement, don’t you? I know I did. Because if you can prove it’s not true then you’ll never have to inspect your life under that standard.
Let it stew for a few minutes… "Most People Consistently Choose Unhappiness Over Uncertainty".
If you’re up for being real honest with yourself – couldn’t you identify areas of your life where you are currently making that choice. If you ever answered a dream with “Sure, I’d love to, BUT WHAT IF…” What follows next is usually an uncertainty that is dominating your life decisions.
But I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves here. I’ve got a lot more to share with you about this, but let me tell you what I asked GP to do, because I want you to do the same. I asked GP to put together a list of 20 things she really enjoys before my appointment the next week.
What about you? Can you do it?
Sadly, many of you will not be able to come up with 20 fun things you enjoy. But if you can come up with even three it’s a start. No matter how many you come up with I want to invite you to post your answers here.
This way we can learn from each other’s lists. My hope is if there are enough people posting we can help the GPs of this world put together a great list for themselves. And like I said, it doesn’t matter how many you have now, just go ahead and share them here.
In my next post I’ll tell you what’s on my list, and how to use this list to dramatically boost your productivity and be a lot more successful a lot sooner.
But first, you’ve got to make the list… So have at it by commenting here.

Not the 20 things, yet, but a comment on the post. My husband and I are living examples of what you are talking about.
Six months ago we both quit well-paying, secure jobs to move to a place we love and pursue building our own businesses. When we told eveyone what we were doing, most people expressed awe and envy – “Gosh I really would love to do that”. My thought – you can!
These responses were all made by people who had talked to me or my husband in the past about their extreme frustrations with their jobs; their inability to find time to enjoy life; their strong desire to move, start a business, etc. etc.
The catch for me was this – ALL of these people were in as good or better position to take this chance as we were. Many had already worked 20 years and had paid off houses and accumulated lots of savings, BUT, even though they yearned to take a chance, they just couldn’t face the uncertainty. Even though they knew they hated their jobs and were bored with their lives, they -thought- at aleast they knew what tomorrow, next month, next year would look like.
We left (after lots of planning) because we knew that we had no idea what tomorrow looked like and we wanted to take another leap before it was too late. Nobody said that making your happiness isn’t risky or scary. Was it easy? No. Financially scary? Yes. The best thing we ever did? Absolutely.

I can sort of relate to the sentence “Most People Consistently Choose Unhappiness Over Uncertainty.” I find it so very true among the people that I’ve come to know(Not all of them). Most of the people tend to complain about not enough time, work overlord and etc.
The reponse when I asked why was always, they can’t or they’ll think about it(Most of the time it never materialize). Therefore, by doing the same thing over and over again(No thinking required), they never have to leave the comfort zone(Which is causing them unhappiness in certain aspect of their life). What I want to say is that there’s always a choice and a road out so long you dare to take a step out in face of uncertainty.

I have two lists. One could be labelled “Reality – Unhappiness chosen over Uncertainty”. The other, a longer list, is the one which gives me a feeling of fulfilment:
Reality:
Wanting to build a 43′ sailboat (bought the plans in 1980 – done nothing with them except dream)
Wanting to set up Internet business(es), but don’t seem able to get past the first step (despite an IQ of approximately150)
Wanting to build / have built a new houseboat to replace the very old and frail one we’re living on, but not being financially able to do so (see previous point).
Wanting a reconciliation with our daughter, but not knowing how to go about it (her boyfriend has successfully poisoned her mind and has built a ‘concrete wall’ around her)
Wanting to find the “get up and go” to lanscape the garden and jetty – to create an Oriental paradise in which we can find peace of mind.
Wanting to find the focus to apply myself to finishing the book I am writing, so I can get on with the next one.
I could go on, but I’m depressing myself, and probably anybody else who might be reading this, so on to list 2…
1. Climbing ‘Tryfan’ (Snowdonia, North Wales), preferably with better half and with daughter.
2. Writing short articles which successfully improve turnover and profits for small and medium size businesses.
3. Meditation. (I did actually see the “White Light” once, but it hasn’t happened since, probably because I WANT it to.)
4. Research and development of a ‘flying car’ (getting close to a workable model – now the legislation)
5. Realisation (occasionally happens!) that emotional pain is part of life, is Karmic, and it wouldn’t be useful if it didn’t hurt.
6. Using my professional experience to help others set up or streamline their own businesses. (I can do it for others, but seemingly not for myself… I’ve been told that this is a fairly common male problem)
7. Sitting on the jetty or terrace in company of lady wife and / or friends, in the sun, with a cold beer or glass of Chardonnay, and snacks (Does this count as two? or four?)
8. Cooking a good meal, balancing the flavour with herbs and spices like a painter creates balance in a picture with nuances of colour.
9. Creating a really good batch of home-made rice wine (my own “secret” recipe – could be for sale ;)) )
10. Reading well written books and realising that many people have an understanding of Truth, even if they don’t consciously realise it – You get those “Aha!” moments which tell you they’ve expressed a deeper truth.
11. Cooking a pan of Chili con Carne which is even better than the previous one!
12. (This is a “used to be”) Having “Family Discussions” with wife and daughter. Anybody could call for one, and we’d all sit, usually on the kitchen floor, and talk out whatever needed talking out. Maybe one day we’ll do it again.
13. Snorkelling or Scuba diving in warm, clear waters (not nearly often enough.
14. Stargazing on a clear night and realizing just how insignificantly small we are, and how full of stupid self importance most of us are, and how God and the universe have such an incredible sense of humour. Wake up, the joke’s on us!
15. Ladies’ legs, hips and bottoms.
16. High heeled shoes as an art form.
17. Being in a different country and being taken for a native, not being recognissed as a tourist.
18. Successfully making a good I-Ching reading and / or Tarot reading (my wife’s better with the Tarot)
19. Asking for an authentic dish which is not on the menu at our local Chinese restaurant, allowing the chef to ’stretch his culinary wings’; the results are usually fantastic.
20. Practicing my version of ‘ai-jitsu’ and getting a move right, or being on target.
An interesting exercise, and although what I have written is all true, I don’t know how completely honest with myself I’ve been. I think there’s something missing…
It’s said that we have two choices in life, fear or love. I have come to realise that love is nothing more than joy. When my dog sees me, he wags his tail for joy, because he loves me. Anyway let’s see if I can find 20 things I enjoy.
1. Playing guitar
2. creating webpages or websites
3. Building guitars
4. Pizza
5. A good sci-fi movie
6. Meditation
7. Listening to good guitar music
8. Seeing an increase in my adsense earnings
9. Something I can’t name here
10. Visiting my best friends
11. Creating pictures on my PC
12. Looking at beautiful hand crafted electric guitars
13. Being alive and feeling great (Existence is a trip all on its own, and some people might be missing out on the experience)
14. A really good joke.
My list seem pretty elementary but here it is.
1. personal training, I enjoy helping someone feel better about themselves.
2. a good play or musical
3. hanging out, getting together with a bunch of friends or family and just talking or reliving memories, usually some kind of food is present.
4. trips to Disney or Vegas both give multiple options for fun and food.
5. a good meal at a nice resturaunt.
6. a good movie.
7. playing softball
8. playing golf,(this however at times feels like choosing unhappiness but it depends on how I play)
9. working out
10. trips to the ocean to sit on the beach and listen to the waves.
It was a lot harder than I thought to come up with 20, but here are 10 things I really enjoy doing. The order is random, I just wrote them down as the popped into my head.
Ok I enjoy most of the things on the lists here and since about 97 percent of people in any demographic are not truly satisfied with what they are doing in their lives I particularly enjoy observing what others are doing and NOT doing what they are doing. Most (maybe all) of the people on this blog are making lists. I’m always looking for the niche that others are not occupying.
Technically I’m retired. However I don’t see that as meaning that I have stopped working. It means I work at what I want when I want. But wait I’ve always done that. So what is different about being retired since I’ve always pursued my dreams and therein found fulfillment? I guess what is different is that I moved to the tropics? But wait I did that when I was 20 years old… of course I said then too — that I was retired so that I could enjoy retirement while I was young enough to do some of the things I may not want to do when I was the age I am now. Back then I spent most of my time surfing or planning to go surfing.
What is different? I used to have a job with the companies I own. Now I’m an investor whose only real job is really to find new investments and put deals together. How then am I retired? I guess I’m not but it sure feels like I am. I was spending my time in front of computers here in Fiji before I got any money for doing so. Since people started offering me money for it — I am still doing the same things I enjoyed without pay.
Perhaps the only difference between when I didn’t think I was retired and now — is that I don’t actually have to do any work if I don’t want to whereas I used to live a lifestyle where I always had bigger plans for my income than it would sustain without increasing it. So for me being retired is still about increasing income but not needing to — and before it was about needing to increase income to keep up with my goals. While that difference may seem small the impact it has on my state of mind, and subsequently on everything I do, is huge.

Rich, I have a question(s).
What if many of the things that you like to do are career / work related and not “leisure” oriented?
Does this show some weird work/life imbalance, or does it indicate something else? And should you give more weight / value to certain activities when making the list (eg. you really, really like going to concerts, but think hanging out with your dog is just OK).
I hope to meet you in person, in a warm sunny location in the near future and have the chance to talk over a cold beer. Now that would be fun.

I am fortunate that I am able to do most of these things on a regular basis. My husband and I have taken the step into the ‘unknown’ more than once and it’s always made a dramatic and wonderful change in our lives. The first time was in deciding to have a baby and winding up with quadruplets (who could plan that) and later by moving to a new town and buying our own business. That step alone has given us the ability to take the time for the things that are important to us right now and to also make way for what we hope our future will bring.

I was at a coaching course a few months ago and there was a discussion about happiness. Some people, as you say, were looking for it, others anchored it to something, as people are doing here, my approach is taken from a quote I saw once [probably Taoist], ‘There is no way to happiness, happiness s the way,’ you choose to be happy and find fun in whatever you do. Sometimes it can be ac hallenge when the chips are down or when I’m tired, then just to smile is really enjoyable.
All the best,
David
Thanks for the prompt Rich – a friend spoke of fun recently…so this is great timing. As to 20 things, more like hundreds!

Hugs
Kisses
Going to new places
Seeing things and ideas with new eyes
Feeling
Touching
Being
I was recently at a coaching course and of the 40 or so people, over 50% were looking for happiness, the remainder anchored happiness to something, much as many on this list are, then I referred to a quote I keep in front of me all day: ‘There is no way to happiness, happiness is the way’, just choosing to be happy is fun. Even when there are challenges and fatigue, managing to find a smile is great, both for the smile and the enjoyment of having found it.
All the best,
David

Rich awesome post!
your words “Most People Consistently Choose Unhappiness Over Uncertainty” are so damn frickin’ TRUE!
as for your question.. i got more than 20 fun things i enjoy..
but honestly – i don’t care..
my goal right now is not to enjoy but build my business to a point where i don’t worry about money..
i don’t care if i can’t enjoy.. and you know what?
i’m not unhappy!
i’m totally happy, thrilled, energetic and love what i’m doing..
infact i enjoy doing this and making sales and knowing i’ll breakthrough
my milestones soon..
because i know i can enjoy later on.. but if i enjoy today..
i won’t tommorow.. and i want my tommorow to be better than today..
you get me?
i haven’t really grasped all the aspects of this fab quote: “Most People Consistently Choose Unhappiness Over Uncertainty”
but if i complete your sentence “Sure, I’d love to, BUT WHAT IF…â€
like if i was talking about spending time on the beach with my family..
it’d be more like “Sure, I’d love to – but i prefer to spend that time building my business today – so tommorow i’ll have the financial freedom to go and stay at the beach for a whole week without worry!”
looking forward to more of your thoughts regarding this..
but gotta say – you just blurted out a magical quote that’ll be quoted in seminars and books for the next 100 years :-)

I really enjoyed your article as it removed the cobwebs from the old grey matter.
the one thing that has really amazed me when reading everones comments is that most of them are totally selfish. any of them that do mention family is usually way down the list. How sad.
20 – too many! Can we really have FUN doing things that concern the following 11 hot, actual and vital issues for our surviving as human beings? The order is aleatoric:
1. Give a hand to a drunker or a drug addicted person that lies on the road in front of us?
2. Take in your (luxury or second hand) car a person that had an accident and is full of blood…?
3. Stop doing your very important things and playing with your kinds, grandkids, nephews or neighbor kids?
4. Feed the hungry?
5. Help the poor?
6. Pray for your enemies?
7. Shake your “disgusting†neighbor’s hand?
8. Have fun by loving and respecting your wife (husband), not by making sex!?

Dear Rich, Unless I am missing the point, it seems that SIVAKUMARY RAMANATHUPILLAI has taken unfair advantage above by making a sales pitch for a very iffy product! This is one problem of the Internet that is a real pain – hijackers using excellent products of others for their own ends, and in the process destroying reputations. I stopped the forum on our website because of all the daily abuse going on that was just such an embarrassment! It took so much policing, and we simply couldn’t manage the 24-hour surveillance that was required to keep the site clean of all the adult material that was being posted – there were armies of them coming from us at all quarters versus a handful of us. And on top of that we had our name hijacked and used in a scam for money, which was done thru the medium of “msn” using an unauthenticated signature. It seems anyone can do this using the name of anyone else’s site (but only for as long as they can get away with it, of course), and it was so easy for them to set up. Needless to say, trying to clear our name has been extremely frustrating, and warnings about us are still to be found on some sites. So beware! SIVAKUMARY RAMANATHUPILLAI’s contribution is not made any more acceptable just because it is not selling porn and does not appear to be a scam (but it may be, of course). I believe that such contributions are a curse (altho I am delighted to see that you do have many genuine and worthwhile contributions). However, if more reponses to your question were to be of this nature I would suggest that many people would be tempted to write you and your advice off as a waste of time, which would be a very great pity (I for one have found it to be first-class and a continual source of inspiration). Sorry, I’ll get off my soap box now….. but no doubt you yourself will wish to put a flea in SIVAKUMARY RAMANATHUPILLAI’s ear. Kindest Regards, Wally Salmon
Rich,
Limiting my what-I-did-for-fun list to the last few weeks, here goes:
1. Pulling back the covers and letting my daughter in bed with me to snuggle when she came into my room this morning asking if it was time to get up yet
2. Taking my son, his girlfriend and his friends to his 8th grade prom this evening – laughing and joking and being welcome in their group as a “cool mom”
3. Taking my son to get fitted for his tuxedo – amazing how grown up he looks in it!
4. Having a long, insightful talk with my 20 y/o son last night after the house quieted down
5. Taking a bubble bath
6. Sitting out on my deck with a cup of French Vanilla coffee listening to the neighborhood wake up
7. Going to the drive-in for a double-feature with the kids – we’re so lucky the only one left in Oklahoma is right here in our neighborhood!
8. Helping my daughter catch tadpoles
9. Spending the weekend at my parents’ out in the country – helping cut and split wood, enjoying a bonfire and connecting with them as not just my parents, but the interesting old farts they’ve become. :)
10. Taking a wood-carving class with my dad and my youngest son
11. Catching up into the wee hours with a long-distance friend
12. Shooting the breeze with some friends who stopped by
13. Substitute teaching at the middle school a couple days this week because I love the kids and they’re glad to see me – if you want to make a difference, be a teacher!
14. Taking one evening to catch up on my Tivo’d TV shows
15. Taking a walk in the woods
16. Watching fireworks after a baseball game
17. Sitting on the tailgate of a pickup, swinging my legs in tandem with my daughter, watching my son play catch with the neighbor, thinking how grateful and blessed I am to have people in my life who step in for absentee fathers
18. Studying quantum physics
19. Declaring a self-care day and pampering myself a little
20. Watching Craig Ferguson’s monologue
Wow, Rich – thanks for what turned out to be an exercise in gratitude. :)
Hi Rich,
Some things that are fun for me are:
1. Spending “fun time” with my family — when we’re not rushing around or trying to get things done.
2. Talking to other people and learning about them.
3. Even more, I love it when I can help others by offering new suggestions or a different perspective.
4. I love to learn.
5. I love stories about people who have changed their lives and experienced dramatic personal growth.
6. I love “getting lost” in a problem.
7. Anytime my ADD brain focuses on one thing, for example, negotiating a difficult technical rock climb, I get a huge rush.

Hi Rich,
As usual – Your information is always thought provoking and inspiring plus the added bonus of all those proevious entries – Fantastic. .
I’ve never posted on your blog before – but since only yesterday I was writing down my goals ( In the present tense) – this was a good primer for livenning up those juices that inevitably get burried many times as we supposedly get on with our lives and forge what we should really be doing.

4). I’me no pary animal – but I love to throw parties with loads of good food – lights , nice people and plenty to drink with wonderful conversations that lead into the early morning and those fantastic evenings sitting outside and the fires are dying down and you’re still trying to solve the worlds ils whilst the early morning birds have appeared .

Meet the great Marketing legends ( Like You Rich) – Ok I can only try!..and many other things which I need to write down – In fact I think I’ll write them down after typing this – because I know that if I do – that is the only way I’ll get around to actually doing them.

I think I understand where you are going with the balance between present and future, but I think it is much more than “having fun”. It’s about living, loving and embracing the present moment. Something happened a couple days ago that illustrates what I am trying to put into words. Your post reminded me of it and in a way highlights what my experience means.
As I was coming home to work on the computer, I saw a baby bird.
It had fallen out of its nest. It was still alive and moving, but the poor thing was being attacked by ants. I had to do something. I couldn’t just leave him there like that.
First, I asked for help.
One neighbor didn’t want to assist, because he had already put the bird back in its nest once and it had fallen out again. Another neighbor was busy with a phone call about abundance and the Law of Attraction.
I tried anyway. I decided that even if I couldn’t save it, I didn’t want it to die alone on the sidewalk being eaten alive by ants. He was writhing in pain and trying unsuccessfully to get those dam# ants off of him.
I picked it up carefully and set it in a little box. I brought it home. Tried to get the ants off without hurting him, but finally had to gently pour water over it to wash them off. I wrapped it in a washcloth and held it next to me as I went online to figure out what to do.
Found a wildlife rehab center nearby, called them, and left a message. Then tried to work a little until they called back, still holding the bird. It was another hour later when they called back. They recommended I either try to make another nest and see if the mother starts to take care of it again or bring it in to them. They said as a hatchling it was not a good idea to try to feed him. He needed special food and a LOT of care.
The little guy was still wiggling in my hand, arching his neck for food, hungry but surely more comfortable than he had been an hour ago. I decided his best chance was to try to reunite him with its mother. It had gone a long time without food, had been dropped from its nest twice, and had been attacked by ants. I didn’t think it would survive a stressful trip to the wildlife rehab.
I made a little “nest” from a hanging planter and hung it near its mother in the tree. He was still in his washcloth and still arching his neck for food. I had given him a bit of water even though the rehabbers said not to do that either.
I left him and hoped for the best.
When I checked on him about an hour later he had fallen asleep.
The next time I checked he had died.
He’s buried in our yard.
I had hoped for a miracle, but in the end all I was able to do was make him comfortable; give him lots of love; and send him as gently as I could into the next life.
It’s a long story, I realize, and I would not describe that as “fun”, but I am certainly richer for having known that little bird for those few hours.
Somehow I think that’s more what this life is about, embracing the present moment and each other. No matter what the future brings.

There is no balance required between “present and future”. Every thing we do must be 100% optimised for both present AND future.
Every action we do it is for BOTH:
a. the moment when we enjoy our every action, AND
b. the future when such actions today bring us wealth, health, happiness and more.
Some years ago, in my blog, I wrote “The idea of ‘live now’ or ‘seize the day’, do not have to be in contradiction with ‘working for a better future’. They are not mutually exclusive. The usual misconception is, life is either about ‘live now’ OR about ‘suffer now for a better future’. People swing between the two extremes. Or worse, they simply live in the balance space between the two extreme. They would say, let’s strike a balance; let’s compromise the two. I disagree….”
Twenty things for BOTH today and tomorrow (no balance to strike):
1. Attend lecture once more (enjoy the moment listening to lecturer and get one more degree in few years time)
2. Spend time with my son on a project (enjoy spending time with him and ‘invest’ in relationship that carry forward to a stronger relationship in the future)

4. Practice Tai Chi (enjoy the morning cold breeze feeling every movement of my body at every moment of now and improve my health for the future)
5. Slow down for a cup of coffee in the office (enjoy the moment, now, and rest a while recharge for next few hours, future)
6. Reading a good book (enjoy now and (unintentionally) prepare for talking materials for future conversations)
7. Cook for others (enjoy the moment of cooking and build a stronger relationship for the future)
8. Meditation (practice watchfulness of moment and self development for the future)
9. Develop web sites (I enjoy every NOW moment of designing web sites and such web sites will bring me money in the Future.)
10. Travel to a foreign country (enjoy every moment of travelling yet taking photograph and collecting memory for writing material publish in the blog for future profit)
11. Relax and pray (enjoy the moment and seek help for a better future)
12. Being with friends and/or family members (enjoy the moment and build relationship for future)
13. Helping son in his study (for now and future as no 2 above)
14. Canoeing (for now and future as no 4 above)
15. Photographing (enjoy the act and building material for blog for future)
16. Watching stars with friends/ family (enjoy the night yet building memory for future rememberance that I did not waste my life)
17. Dreaming (enjoy the moment yet exploring alternative for a better future)
18. Working on the computer (for now and future as no 9 aboove)
19. Help people which include giving donations (that make me feel good as a better person now and building a good karma for the future)
20. Not spending on wastage like branded watch, TV, and other items (that make me feel good of not spending on such items yet building my savings account for more money in the future)
the list can go on…for single action that give us both 100% present and future, without a balance to strike or compromise.
